Mirko Sanna Rides 1st Korean Winner

Mirko Sanna began his Korean stint at Busan on Friday and it didn’t take the Italian licensed jockey long to get off the mark as he guided 20/1 chance B.K. Park to victory at Busan on Sunday afternoon.

The 32-year-old Sanna, who had previously ridden in Europe, Malaysia and Canada, made the breakthrough on what was 12th Korean ride. He took B.K Park right back at the start of the 1300M Busan race 4 and closed well to beat odds on favourite Great King by just over a length on the line.

Sudafrica: Legal Eagle si conferma campione nell’Ormarins Queen’s Plate! Obiettivo J & B Met il 28 Gennaio..

A Kenilworth, in Sudafrica, domenica pomeriggio si è tenuto uno degli appuntamenti più esclusivi, elitari, mondani di tutta la nazione. L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate G1 sul miglio, giunto alla 156° edizione con R1.5 milioni in palio, il primo grande appuntamento dell’estate Sudafricana 2017, è stato vinto come da pronostico dal campione uscente Legal Eagle (Grey’s Inn) il quale ha raggiunto l’obiettivo in canter o poco più. Già titolare dell’appellativo di Horse of the Year conquistato lo scorso anno, Legal Eagle, un 5 anni di Sean Tarry e di proprietà dei coniugi Mrs I Jooste & Mr M J Jooste, si è presentato ai 200 all’appoggio nelle mani di Anton Marcus e si è gradualmente staccato dalla compagnia capeggiata da Captain America (Captain Al) e Sail South (Sail From Seattle), mentre solo quarto è giunto il controfavorito Marinaresco (Silvano), un 3 anni molto forte. Ma alla fine la forza dell’esperienza ha avuto la meglio per un cavallo che adesso preparerà al meglio una rivincita nel J & B Met G1 del 28 Gennaio ancora a Kenilworth, in un contesto ancora più esclusivo, dove cercherà di migliorare il secondo posto ottenuto lo scorso anno alle spalle della femmina Smart Call in una corsa che ebbe come quarto anche Light Of Lights (Western Winter), qualche giorno fa vincitore delle Singspiel Stakes a Meydan.

Legal Eagle ha nel suo score un bel punto di forza: 9 vittorie e 4 piazzamenti in 15 uscite, si tratta di un vincitore Classico di Derby e autore di triplo di G1 nel Queen’s Plate, H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes e Champions Challenge. Come detto è di proprietà dei coniugi Jooste, alias Mayfair Speculators, molto attivi in compartecipazione con il Coolmore anche in Europa negli ultimi 2 anni e gruppo in totale divenire. Allevato dall’Avontuur Stud manager Pippa Mickleburgh, Legal Eagle è certamente miglior figlio di suo padre Greys Inn (Zabeel) che funziona presso il Rosedene Stud ad un tasso di 15,000 rands.

Mercato fantini in Inghilterra. Hugo Palmer ingaggia Josephine Gordon, la nuova Hayley Turner del galoppo UK.

Di lei si dice sia la nuova Hayley Turner, ma forse qualcosa anche di più. Qualcuno ha anche scritto che vincerà il titolo dei fantini nei prossimi 15 anni. Sta di fatto, che la carriera di Josephine Gordon sta prendendo una bella piega mese dopo mese. Classe 1993, la 23enne jockette inglese, titolare dell’ultimo titolo di Champion apprentice, dopo la stessa Hayley Turner (2005) e Amy Ryan (2012) tra le donne, nel 2017 avrà una buona opportunità di lavoro da parte di Hugo Palmer, uno degli allenatori emergenti nel parco inglese. Palmer, che con la Gordon ha ottenuto 12 vittorie in 44 ingaggi, ha parlato al The Sun di questa nuova opportunità che vedrà i due ancora collaborare presso le scuderie del Kremlin Cottage Stables, ogni mattina, ma non in maniera esclusiva. Una collaborazione che potrà dare anche i suoi frutti in pista perchè molti proprietari dello stesso Palmer hanno manifestato fiducia alla jockette, che dunque avrà parecchie possibilità nel corso dell’anno. Palmer non avrà la Gordon come jockey esclusivo, anzi, molto spesso monterà cavalli con pesi bassi, ma intanto è un passo in avanti per una fantina che ha fatto passi da gigante nella stagione. Lei stessa si è detta eccitata dell’idea di far parte di un team così prestigioso.

Champion apprentice makes move to join Palmer expansion

Hugo Palmer will have first call on the services of champion apprentice Josephine Gordon this year as part of expansion plans for 2017, which involve a new second yard on Newmarket’s Hamilton Road.

As well as Palmer’s current base at Kremlin Cottage Stables, which houses over 100 horses, the Classic-winning trainer is expected to fill a 50-box facility nearing completion next door to Marco Botti’s former home at Green Ridge Stables.

Gordon was a regular sight among the Palmer ranks on work mornings last year and recently moved to Newmarket to take up the offer of going on the books of a trainer for whom she has ridden 12 winners from just 44 rides.

Although not employed as official stable number one, Gordon can expect to pick up plenty of rides as many of Palmer’s owners do not currently have their owned retained jockeys bar Al Shaqab [Frankie Dettori] and Godolphin [James Doyle and William Buick].

Gordon said: “It’s an exciting opportunity to join Mr Palmer and hopefully one I can take with both hands. I recently completed a move to Newmarket to take up the offer and hopefully I can ride out for other trainers when I’m around as I did last year. I’ve also picked up some rides for Ed Dunlop of late and hopefully I can ride out for Sir Michael Stoute one day a week as I did last year.”

In her push for the apprentice crown last summer, Gordon lost her 3lb claim, something that has not seemed to stem the flow of winners and is even something that may help in her new arrangement.

She said: “I think it was hard for Hugo to get a claimer to ride for some of his bigger owners last year who, understandably, wanted a more established jockey but now I’ve ridden out my claim it should be easier. I’ve already ridden for the likes of Khalid Abdullah, Godolphin and Mr Araci and hopefully can do so again.”

Gordon, who on Saturday rode her fourth winner of the year at Lingfield, added: “I plan to ride on the all-weather here through the winter and then on to the turf season, depending where Hugo wants me. It’s an up-and-coming yard and hopefully we can have another big year.”

Gordon will be in familiar company in her new role as her agent Phil Shea rides out for the stable and his wife Angie is Palmer’s head lass.

Phil Shea said: “Hopefully Josie can ride the majority of the horses at Hugo’s as he has a nice spread of owners. It’s a big year for her and I think she has the potential to be even bigger than Hayley Turner.”
