Pune (India), domenica 28 agosto, anche oggi siamo fortunati splende il sole, i monsoni ci hanno risparmiato lasciandoci godere la struttura che ci accoglie. Il nostro Speciale India continua con la visita al Poonawalla Stud Farms che è considerato l’allevamento leader del paese, con 12 “Champion Breeders ‘Awards” (gli ultimi 7 sono stati vinti in successione continua). Ma i successi sono stati ben più numerosi, l’azienda ha allevato 343 vincitori classici  fino al settembre 2015, tra cui i vincitori di 9 Derby e 68 corse classiche indiane. 

Poonawalla Stud Farms è stato costituito (come Poona Stud Farm) nel 1946 dal fondatore Soli A. Poonawalla con circa una dozzina di fattrici e lo stallone Fitz Clarence (GB). Da subito l’allevamento ha prodotto il vincitore delle 2.000 Ghinee Indiane: Fitzcall. L’allevamento attualmente è suddiviso in due unità separate:  la divisione youngstock situata ad Hadapsar e la divisione breeding situata a Theur, a circa 10 km da Pune la prima ed a 24 km la seconda. Attualmente la scuderia annovera circa 140 fattrici e 3 stalloni di proprietà. La maggior parte della produzione annuale viene venduta tramite licita privata proprio dalla famiglia Poonawalla, che ogni anno comunque si riserva di tenere una parte dei prodotti per correre sotto i propri colori.

Tutti gli stalloni residenti al Poonawalla Stud Farm sono sempre stati selezionati con l’obiettivo primario, da sempre perseguito dai fratelli  Cyrus e Zavaray Poonawalla, di produrre costantemente cavalli classici e di rimanere in modo perentorio al vertice della classifica degli stalloni in India. In poche parole questa è la grande realtà costruita dalla famiglia Poonawalla, che nelle brochure che ci sono state consegnate durante la  nostra visita e nei trofei esibiti, è alquanto evidente. Nella favolosa club house risaltano alle pareti le foto dei grandi campioni risultato della capacità allevatoria della famiglia e dei suoi collaboratori.

Ad attenderci in allevamento nella divisione youngstock sono: il Dr. Satish K. Rohmehtra, Direttore dell’allevamento ed il Dr. S.R. Gandhe, Nutrizionista. Veniamo accompagnati nell’area di presentazione dei cavalli e ad attenderci c’è il favoloso Mystical, già tenuto in posa dal lad che lo accudisce.

 

Il campione che ha saputo regalare alla famiglia Poonawalla un capitolo molto importante: Cavallo dell’anno 2005/2006, vincitore al Dubai International Racing Carnival (foto sotto da sinistra: Mrs. Behroze, Mr,Zavaray Poonawalla, Trainer S. Ed ecco che alla presentazione delle prime quattro yearlings (foto sotto), ci raggiunge anche Mrs. Simone Poonawalla, Manager Youngstock  dell’allevamento, con il marito e la piccola figlia Arianna. Le cavalle sono molto belle, figlie di Excellent Art, che ora è qui resident stallion ed è in splendida forma. Morfologia e presentazione delle cavalle ineccepibile, ed i pedegree sono molto interessanti con nomi importanti nelle caselle giuste e con un corretto e ricercato equilibrio delle maggiori linee riproduttive.

 

Lo stesso è per gli yearlings che seguono: quattro maschi, due da Arazan (foto sotto) e due da Excellent Art,

Pausa dedicata al brunch ed al dialogo con Simone Poonawalla, per approfondire qualche opinione sulle linee stalloniere, sui futuri sviluppi di un allevamento che è capace di presentare un catalogo 2016 con 80 yearlings, e che si estende su un’area decisamente importante. Simone, con la squisita gentilezza indiana ci accompagna per tutta la visita e con estrema semplicità e chiarezza ci spiega le varie fasi di gestione e di controllo della filiera per arrivare a produrre campioni sempre più attuali morfologicamente e puntuali sul traguardo. Linee classiche, questo è l’obiettivo perseguito costantemente dall’allevamento.

In auto ci trasferiamo poi nell’area breeding dedicata alle fattrici, ai foals, ad una parte di yearlings ed agli stalloni. Il verde e gli spazi accuratamente distribuiti sono un colpo d’occhio che lascia senza fiato.

 

Arazan (IRE, bay 2006, Anabaa ed Asmara – Lear Fan da Roberto, foto sotto) già pronto ad essere ammirato nel centro del suo paddock, ci guarda con distacco, poi decide che possiamo avvicinarci per le foto di rito. Chiaramente l’attività in corsa del campione è stata notevole e la progenie si è già fatta valere e non poco.

Proseguiamo nella visita ed incontriamo Leitir Mor (IRE, bay 2010, da Holy Roman Emperor e Christinas Letter – Galileo da Sadlers Wells, foto sotto), stallone dalla faccia molto espressiva. E’ stato importato dall’Irlanda in particolare perché il suo padre Holy Roman Emperor, è stato il più prolifico degli stalloni attivi sul suolo indiano e quindi il probabile potenziale di Leitir Mor lo pone nella condizione di essere uno stallone di successo in India.

Ed eccoci dal grande Excellent Art (GB, bay 2004, Pivotal ed Obsessive da Seeking the Gold – Mr. Prospector). Che dire: la forma è smagliante e la consapevolezza di essere stallone è chiaramente mostrata dagli atteggiamenti nel paddock. D’altronde stiamo parlando di uno dei più importanti stalloni del mondo: per 6 volte Champion Sire nel Regno Unito, multi-campione degli stalloni con 21 soggetti vincitori di G1, tra Regno Unito, Irlanda, Francia, America, Germania e Sudafrica.

Il tour si conclude con un rapido sguardo alle giostre, alla pista realizzata per il pre-allenamento dei puledri, alla clinica, ai box ed alla spiegazione delle aree coperte, che sono ben distribuite, tutte dotate di aria condizionata e attrezzate contro gli insetti. Inutile dire che anche i servizi per gli uomini dello staff sono eccellenti.

Siamo al termine di un’altra giornata di grande cultura ippica qui in India, dove gli schemi produttivi dei grandi allevamenti inglesi sono stati rivisti e migliorati sotto molti aspetti. Si può solo dire grazie alla famiglia Poonawalla che cerca di esprimere sempre il meglio coi suoi prodotti e cerca ogni giorno di raggiungere un nuovo obiettivo sempre più ambizioso nel mondo ippico nazionale ed internazionale.

A salutarci è ricomparso anche Arazan (foto sotto) forse non contento del poco tempo che gli abbiamo dedicato, e ci ha mostrato il suo muso espressivo, quasi a dirci arrivederci ad un prossimo e non troppo lontano incontro.

SPECIAL INDIA // Poonawalla Stud Farm, where the thoroughbred is the emblem of success and a great culture

Pune (India), Sunday, August 28, today we are lucky the sun shines, the monsoons have spared leaving us to enjoy the structure that welcomes us. Our Special India continues with a visit to Poonawalla Stud Farms which is considered the leading farming country, with 12 “Champion Breeders’ Awards” (the last seven were won in succession continues). But the successes were far more numerous, the company has raised 343 classic winners until September 2015, including the winners of 9 Derby and 68 Indian classical races.

Poonawalla Stud Farms was established (as Poona Stud Farm) in 1946 by the founder Soli A. Poonawalla with about a dozen mares and the stallion Fitz Clarence (GB). From its very first crop the farm produced the Indian 2000 Guineas winner in Fitzcall. The Stud Farm is currently divided into two separate units: the youngstock division located at Hadapsar and the breeding division located at Theur, about 10 km from Pune the first one and 24 km the second one.

Currently the team has about 140 mares and 3 stallions owned.

Most of the annual production is sold through private bid by the Poonawalla family, that every year still reserves the right to hold a part of the products to run under their own colors.

All stallions resident to Poonawalla Stud Farm have always been selected with the prime objective, that has always been pursued by brothers Cyrus and Zavaray Poonawalla, to consistently produce classic horses and stay in a peremptory way to the top of the ranking of stallions in India.

In few words this is the great reality built by Poonawalla family, which in the brochure that there were handed during our visit and the exhibited trophies, is quite evident.

Waiting for us in the breeding youngstock division are: Dr. Satish K. Rohmehtra, breeding Director and Dr. S.R. Gandhe, Nutritionist. In the fabulous clubhouse walls stand out the photos of the great champions results of the bredding capability of the family and its collaborators.

We are accompanied in the equine viewing gallery and waiting there for us there is the fabulous Mystical, already held posing by the lad who looks after him. The champion which has been able to give the Poonawalla family a very important chapter: Horse of the ’2005/2006 year, winner in the Dubai International Racing Carnival.

And then at the presentation of the first four yearling fillies also reaches us Mrs. Simone Poonawalla, Youngstock Manager, with her husband and her pretty and little daughter Arianna. The fillies are very beautiful, daughters of Excellent Art which is here now resident stallion and is in great shape. The morphology and the presentation of the fillies is  unexceptionable, and pedigrees are very interesting with important names in the right boxes, and with proper and refined balance of the major breeding lines. The same is for yearlings that  follow, four colts, two by Arazan and two by Excellent Art.

Pause dedicated to brunch and to dialogue with Simone Poonawalla, to deepen some opinion on sires lines, on the future development of a Stud Farm which is able to present a catalogue 2016 with 80 yearlings and it extends in a real vast  area. Simone, with the usual exquisite indian politeness, accompanies us throughout the visit and with extreme simplicity and clarity explains the various stages of management and supply chain control, so as to produce champions more current morphologically and timely at the winning post. Classic lines, this is the objective constantly breeding.

In the car we move then to the area devoted to breeding mares, the foals, a part of yearlings and stallions. The green and carefully distributed space is a glance that leaves you breathless.

Arazan (IRE, bay 2006 Anabaa and Asmara – Lear Fan by Roberto) ready to be admired in the center of his paddock, watching us from a distance, then decide that we can get closer to take our photos. Clearly, the activity during the races of the champion has been remarkable and the progeny has already relied on and not a little.

We continue the visit and meet Leitir Mor (IRE, bay 2010 by Holy Roman Emperor and Christinas Letter – Galileo from Sadlers Wells), stallion with a very expressive face. He was imported from Ireland in particular because his Sire Holy Roman Emperor, was the most prolific of the active stallions on indian soil and therefore the likely potential Leitir Mor puts him in a position to be a successful stallion in India.

And now we are by the great Excellent Art (GB, bay 2004 Pivotal and Obsessive by Seeking the Gold – Mr. Prospector). What can we say ! His shape is brilliant and the knowledge that he is a stallion is clearly shown by the attitudes in the paddock.

After all we are talking about one of the most important stallions of the world: 6 times Champion Sire in the United Kingdom, multi-champion stallions with 21 winners of G1 subjects, including the UK, Ireland, France, America, Germany and South Africa.

The tour concludes with a quick look at the horse walker, the three turf tracks which are used for exercising and pre-training the youngstock, the equine-clinic, the stabling facilities with several modern blocks, covered areas, which are well distributed, all air-conditioned provided and equipped against insects. Needless to say that services for the men of the staff are excellent.

We are at the end of another day of great equestrian culture here in India, where production rules of the great british farms have been revised and improved under many aspetcs. We can only say thanks to Poonawalla family trying to always express the best with its products and tries every day to reach a new target increasingly ambitious in the national and international equestrian world.
