Verso il weekend europeo. Sabato il St Leger a Doncaster e le Irish Champion a Leopardstown. Domenica trials a Chantilly

 
Siamo ad inizio settimana o quasi, ma è il momento di fare il punto della situazione di quello che accadrà nel fine settimana. Sabato a Doncaster si corre il St Leger G1 che avrà un favorito netto in Idaho (Galileo), duplice piazzato di Derby inglese ed irlandese, e vincitore a York delle Great Voltigeur Stakes G2 in ottica St Leger. Il fratello di Highland Reel è al momento a 4/5, in una selezione di Aidan O’Brien che vedrà almeno altri 2 o 3 compagni di scuderia provarci. Uno di questi è Houseofparliament (Galileo) che ha seguito Idaho a York. La curiosità è rappresentata dal fatto che sabato si correranno anche le Irish Champion Stakes G1 a Leopardstown, e Ryan Moore (in sella ad Idaho) dovrà prendere un aereo verso l’Irlanda appena sceso di sella dal St Leger che si correrà alle 16,45, mentre in Irlanda si correrà alle 19,45 ed avrà sotto il sedere la favorita Minding.
 
Ma andiamo con ordine. John Gosden ha tolto dai rimasti Wings Of Desire (Pivotal) perchè dopo le fatiche contro gli anziani merita riposo. Piuttosto crede molto nel grigio Muntahaa (Dansili), di proprietà Hamdan, ancora molto verde ma cresciuto molto a livello di competitività nelle King Edward VII Stakes G2 (terzo di Across The Stars) ma soprattutto a Chester quando ha vinto una Listed. Dentro al St Leger anche Red Verdon (Lemon Drop Kid), terza scelta del betting al momento (Aggiornamento: Ed Dunlop lo ha ritirato ufficialmente mercoledì pomeriggio NDR). Ma il St Leger è il St Leger, una corsa con molta tradizione e molta stamina necessaria. Quindi, sorprese sono possibili. LA LISTA DEI 14 RIMASTI QUI.
Come anticipato sabato ci saranno anche le Irish Champion Stakes G1 sui 2000 metri da €1,1 milioni, e sono ancora 17 all’ultimo forfait, con aggiornamenti in continuo sviluppo entro giovedì pomeriggio o venerdì. Non così scontata la presenza di Minding (Galileo), iscritta anche nelle Matron G1, mentre Postponed se ne starà a casuccia a preparare lo sparo nell’Arc come ammesso da Roger Varian lunedì. Al via a Leopardstown ci dovrebbero essere anche i 3 anni Harzand (Sea The Stars) e Fascinating Rock (Fastnet Rock) per Dermot Weld, che deciderà però dopo l’ultimo lavoro e consultato il meteo ma ha già messo in preallarme Frankie Dettori. Al momento in Irlanda ci sono 24 gradi ed il tempo è buono, ma verso il fine settimana cadrà un pò di acqua. Dentro ci sono ancora Almanzor (Wootton Basset) dalla Francia e la femmina Found (Galileo), la quale è in preparazione per l’Arc. Probabile Success Days (Jeremy) alla ricerca sempre delle briciole altrui, qualora piovesse per lui sarebbe ancora meglio. I RIMASTI DELLLE IRISH CHAMPION CLICCANDO QUI.
Vanno usati molti dubitativi perchè contemporaneamente, domenica, a Chantilly si corrono il Niel G2, il Foy G2 ed il Vermeille G1 in ottica Arc de Triomphe. Mentre i grossi calibri hanno annunciato che andranno direttamente all’appuntamento clou, molti rifiniranno la condizione proprio in Francia. Nel Niel G2 per tre anni sono rimasti in 10 ma ci sarà sicuramente Midterm (Galileo), dopo aver fallito il Derby, ma con il cavallo di Sir Michael Stoute pronto a vedere di che pasta è fatto. In pista anche il giapponese Makahiki (Deep Impact) in un assaggio della pista e del clima corse francesi e per il quale Cristophe Patrice Lemaire è apparso molto confidente. Nella lista dei rimasti c’è anche Zarak (Dubawi). Nel Vermeille G1 sono rimaste al momento in 7 e quelle rimarranno probabilmente fino alla fine e cioè Candarliya, Endless Time, Mango Tango, Golden Valentine, The Juliet Rose, Highlands Queen, Left Hand.
Non c’è solo il Vermeille ma anche il Moulin G1 di Longchamp a Chantilly con 9 cavalli rimasti all’ultimo forfait prima dei partenti: Dutch Connection, Vadamos, Zarak, Zelzal, Stormy Antarctic, Volta, Spectre, Trixia. Nel Foy G2 per anziani sono in 3 (??) i rimasti al forfait di mercoledì, molti andranno dritti alla meta, e dunque ci si aspettano eventuali supplementazioni. Al momento dentro ci sono One Foot In Heaven, Elliptique, Silverwave.

RYAN MOORE will ride only at Leopardstown on Saturday with Seamie Heffernan going to Doncaster to ride Idaho, the odds-on favourite, in the Ladbrokes St Leger.

Not for the first time the clash between Irish Champions day at Leopardstown and the final Classic of the British season has presented problems for jockeys hoping to ride at both meetings and speaking on Wednesday Aidan O’Brien said: “It has been decided that Ryan will concentrate on Leopardstown on Saturday and that Seamus will ride Idaho at Doncaster.”

O’Brien also ruled Somehow, an impressive winner at the Curragh on her most recent start, out of the Group 1 Matron Stakes at Leopardstown. He said: “Somehow has tweaked a muscle and won’t be running in the Matron. Ryan will ride Alice Springs in the race.”

Idaho could be joined by stablemates

On his jockey plans for Saturday, O’Brien added:”If Ryan was to ride Idaho in the St Leger he wouldn’t make it back to Leopardstown in time for the Matron Stakes. We discussed the situation and it was agreed to have Ryan at Leopardstown and that Seamus would ride Idaho.

“In addition to riding Minding and Alice Springs Ryan’s other rides will include Douglas Macarthur in the Group 3 Willis Towers Watson Champions Juvenile Stakes and US Army Ranger in the Group 3 KPMG Enterprise Stakes.”

Heffernan rode Idaho to win the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York last month and also partnered the colt to finish third in the Investec Derby.

O’Brien said: “We’ll decide in the morning how many we’ll declare for the St Leger. Seamus, Colm (O’Donoghue) and Donnacha (O’Brien) will be involved at Doncaster and will make it back in time for the later races at Leopardstown including the Champion Stakes.”

‘Significant’ rain possible on Saturday

With the surface drying out clerk of the course Roderick Duncan will walk the course Thursday morning, with the prospect of a further adjustment to the going description that is currently good to soft, good in places.

Although forecasted to be dry until Friday, Duncan has also reported the possibility of ‘a significant amount of rain’ on Saturday morning, before the St Leger gets under way at 3.45.

He said: “I think the ground has started to dry a little bit this afternoon but we’ll wait and see what it walks like tomorrow morning. I’m not anxious to change the description at the moment and I will head out to walk the course around 5.45 tomorrow morning. 

“It is forecast to be dry right through now until late Friday afternoon when there is a chance of showers. 

“There is a bigger risk of rain on Saturday morning. At the moment, there is due to be rain at around 7am on Saturday and we could have a significant amount of rain. We’ll keep an eye on that forecast and see how it develops.”

Weld opts for Irish Champion with Harzand

HARZAND is set to line up in the Qipco Irish Champion Stakes on Saturday with ground conditions looking favourable for the dual Derby winner.

Dermot Weld has scratched Harzand from Sunday’s Prix Niel, which had been an alternative for the Aga Khan’s star colt had the surface at Leopardstown been unsuitable.

The trainer said  ”The going at Leopardstown and the weather forecast suggest the ground will be safe and the plan is for Harzand and Fascinating Rock to run in the Irish Champion Stakes. Both horses are well and  we’ll make a final decision before declaration time.”

Ground forecast to ease at Leopardstown

Harzand was on Wednesday a top-priced 3-1 chance behind Minding for the Group 1 test at Leopardstown where outbreaks of rain were forecast for Wednesday night and again on Thursday evening,

Clerk of the course Lorcan Wyer said on Wednesday: “I was in Leopardstown this morning and I’d describe the ground on the outside track as being on the easy side of good. The inside track is drier but still good.

“We could get between between three and five millimetres of rain tonight and the forecast is for more rain late on Friday evening. It’s hard to know how much we’ll get but if the forecast proves accurate I’d expect the ground on the outside track to ride on the easy side of good on Saturday.

“The team at Leopardstown have done a fantastic job. It’s beautiful ground – like a carpet.”

Latest from the Curragh

Weld has yet to train a winner of the Irish Champion Stakes while Pat Smullen, who rides Harzand, will also be seeking a first win in the event. Frankie Dettori, however, has landed the prize six times, most recently when scoring on Golden Horn a year ago.

Weld said: “Frankie has ridden for me in the past and I remember him just missing out on a Royal Ascot winner for us when Steaming Home was beaten a neck in the Windsor Castle Stakes [in 2001].”

The ground at the Curragh, which stages three Group 1s on Sunday – the Irish St Leger,  the National Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes – was changed from yielding to good to yielding on Wednesday.

The racecourse’s director of racing Paul Hensey said: “We changed the ground description early this morning and we’ve had a nice dry day. The ground is more good than yielding on the round course.

“The forecast is a bit unsettled and if there is to be any significant rain in will be some time on Friday. We’ve been told we could get somewhere between four and ten millimetres but that forecast could change, so we’ll have to wait and see.”

Roma: Priore Philip, rientro con vittoria dopo 16 mesi. Il campione italiano 2014 ha fornito una convincente prestazione

 
 
 
È tornato. Decidete voi se mettere o no il punto interrogativo dopo l’affermazione. Intanto,Priore Philip (Dane Friendly), (foto Domenico Savi) rigenerato da una stagione “sabbatica” in Francia, è apparso certamente rigenerato nei modi e nella testa, vincendo al rientro la condizionata sui 1600 metri in pista piccola dopo 16 lunghi mesi di digiuno che sono sembrati una eternità per il cavallo copertina della stagione 2014. Il 5 anni, dopo il lungo buio a 4 anni, era stato castrato prima della carriera francese che aveva portato al massimo un quarto posto in condizionata di provincia a Montluçon – Néris-les-Bains (dove si partiva senza gabbie…) in Maggio mentre al ritorno in quel di Cenaia è tornato ad esprimersi con una vittoria convincente. 
 
Con in sella Fabio Branca, 2 su 2 in coppia con Priore, è partito come al solito svelto tirando un pò nella prima parte, ma quando il jockey di Dorgali ha assestato la manovra in avanti, il sauro ha docilmente restituito appoggio prendendo lunghezze senza strafare, fino alla dirittura dove ha fatto la volata di 600 metri accelerando progressivamente finendo in 33,00 il parziale, incoraggiante, con un tempo finale di 1m 38,6s che riflette di fatto l’andatura. A 4 lunghezze la femmina in formissima Musa D’Oriente (Nayef), che non fa linea per i gran premi (cavalla da HP buonissimi) ma comunque da un riferimento per il prossimo futuro. Fabio Branca è apparso soddisfatto: “Mi hanno lasciato un pò troppo vantaggio da gestire.. sebbene fosse un incognita Priore, è comunque un cavallo di categoria. Ho fatto il canter fino in dirittura e poi solo una volata di 600 metri. A me è piaciuto molto, comunque“. IL VIDEO DELLA VITTORIA QUI.
 
Priore, divenuto un 120 di rating dopo la vittoria del Premio Roma G1, vinse al rientro nel 2015 ma poi in 5 corse fece tutti np. Dopo il quarto in Maggio, ecco il ritorno raccontato in Settembre. Era alla 13° vittoria in 21 uscite. Non si conoscono aal momento gli obiettivi in quanto era importante intanto rivederlo all’opera, poi si deciderà il da farsi. Non è iscritto nel Di Capua G1, farà magari un’altra corsa per capire se è stato totalmente recuperato ma un obiettivo suggestivo potrebbe essere quello del Ribot G3, intitolato a Lollo Luciani che il Priore lo ha appunto creato, che chiuderebbe un magnifico cerchio.
 
La mamma di Priore è Lan Force (Blu Air Force), che ha prodotto anche il buon Final Reckoning (Dark Angel), duplice vincitore in Inghilterra per Godolphin, ed ha uno yearling da Teofilo (Galileo) acquistato privatamente dalla Scuderia Incolinx. La fattrice, ora 10 anni, è gravida di Invincible Spirit.

Esibendo lo scatto dei giorni migliori, Morning News ha messo il sigillo sul Premio Rosate, prova di chiusura del convegno di Milano e Tris/Quartè/Quintè del pomeriggio. Ritemprata dalla breve pausa, montata con il consueto senso del traguardo da Luca Maniezzi, la portacolori della scuderia Concarena ha atteso i 300 finali per scattare all’inseguimento del battistrada Zampieri e la progressione non ha lasciato scampo al pur generoso rivale. Zampieri ha corso con grande coraggio, strappando all’apertura delle gabbie per assumere l’ iniziativa, ha scandito buona andatura nel tentativo di fare selezione ma si è dovuto inchinare alla rivale, presentata alla grande da Marco Gasparini, Salimbeni ha concluso in crescendo facendo suo il terzo posto, poi Rischiatutto che di misura ha preceduto Intellectual Boy.

Si è fatto attendere, ma alla fine è arrivato il primo successo di Dario Vargiu dalla riapertura di San Siro. Nella prima Eliminatoria del San Siro Sprint, sui 1200 metri, il jockey sardo ha condotto alla vittoria Soubretta, nonostante i 64 chili in sella: la cavalla allenata da Simondi è stata protagonista di un bel testa a testa praticamente sin dal via con l’ ospite Tyranitar e Dario Vargiu ha dovuto usare tutta la sua grinta – ed anche una buona dose di mestiere – per respingere l’ attacco prolungato del rivale. A ridossso è terminata terza Ariam Breeze, mentre Magic Pako è stato parecchio sacrificato all’ epilogo, chiudendo quarto con non poche recriminazioni.

Probabilmente il pesino Quetzal, che ha strappato il comando delle operazioni a Fata Birichina, ha un po’ mandato all’aria i piani tattici della favorita nel Premio Terzago, sta di fatto che la cavalla allenata da Valentino Ficara, dopo aver lanciato la volata lunga appena in dirittura, ai 300 finali ha affievolito lo slancio e alle sue spalle si sono materializzati due tra i soggetti meno attesi della prova, ovvero Printeris e Benbow: il cavallo di Marco Amerio, con in sella Antonio Fresu, ha resistito al ritorno del rivale e si è imposto a quota shock. Terza è Fata Birichina.

Il match della vigilia proposto dal Premio Lazzate, l’altra “reclamare” ben frequentata del pomeriggio, si è concretizzato in pista: l’ha spuntata Regarde Moi, che al betting rivestiva ruolo di controfavorito, confermando di essere già in buona condizione per questo suo rientro stagionale. La Dioscuri ha controllato tatticamente la corsa sin dal via, con la tre anni Silent Place a svolgere ruolo di apripista per il vecchione di scuderia: quando il favorito Grand Oriente ha spostato per lanciare l’ attacco, Fabio Branca lo ha anticipato e Regarde Moi ha risposto colpo su colpo conservando mezza lunghezza sul traguardo, di vantaggio.

Tre anni a caccia della prima vittoria nel Premio Duca di Marino, sui 1200 metri in dirittura: dopo l’ottimo piazzamento contro anziani di prima fascia a Napoli, Torna a Surriento si presentava all’appuntamento nel ruolo di netto favorito, e il portacolori della scuderia Topeeka come da copione ha regalato l’immediato bis al suo team, ancora con Federico Bossa in sella. Vittoria semplice semplice. Facia De Tola, l’ altra maiden illustre, ha faticato un poco a reperire lo spazio, poi ha sprintato bene per far suo il secondo posto. Terzo a sorpresa è Giglio di Breme.

Ha riservato una sorpresa la prova di apertura del convegno infrasettimanale di San Siro con la vittoria di Dratonta, training di Silvia Casati e monta di Federico Bossa, che con un violento allungo ha fatto una vittima illustre, ovvero quel Virtual Game che dopo il ritiro di Duca di Mantova era il netto favorito di questo Premio Bareggio.
