Mrs Danvers proves her worth again at Newbury
Report: Newbury, Friday, Bathwick Tyres St Hugh’s Fillies’ Stakes (Listed Race) 5f, 2yo
BARGAIN buy Mrs Danvers returned to the scene of her Weatherbys Super Sprint success to gain some valuable black type as she extended her unbeaten run to four.
Having collected a first prize of £122,000 in the big sales race last time, the flying filly was set a completely different challenge off level weights but she proved up to the task to add another chapter to the rags-to-riches story.
Led out of the Ascot sales ring in February after failing to attract a bid of more than £1,000, Mrs Danvers has been a sensation this season for trainer Jonathan Portman, who bought her back in, and owners Turf Club 2014.
‘She’s thriving’
The 5-2 favourite was prominent throughout the 5f contest and picked up well after being asked to quicken a furlong out by jockey Richard Kingscote. The winning margin was two lengths with Equimou (9-1) sticking on for second ahead of Stormy Clouds (12-1).
“She’s thriving,” said Portman. “She’s a remarkable filly who has improved on a daily basis. She’s versatile with the ground and after the Super Sprint she owed us nothing – she won what she was bought for.
“I owed her breeders some black type and I’ve a sneaky feeling she has more to offer.”
Options open
The next decision for connections will be whether to go up in trip with Mrs Danvers, who has done all her winning at the minimum distance.
“There’s no rush to go 6f so we’ll see,” added Portman. “If we did there’s the Dick Poole at Salisbury, but there’s the Flying Childers over 5f at Doncaster and something in France.
“The Cornwallis would be a good aim at the end of the year and I’ve always told people she’ll win the Abbaye, but I didn’t say as a two-year-old. We’ll enjoy the moment for now though.
“I’ve never had anything as quick and she’s been great for me. It’ll be nice if more people realise we can train.”
