Siamo giunti al day 4, anche questo contraddistinto da novità inattese e certezze inespugnabili. Al primo tentativo in G1, Quiet Reflection (Showcasing) ha mantenuto le promesse vincendo con gran convinzione la Commonwealth Cup G1, confermandosi una sprinter di livello ed ottenendo la sesta vittoria in 7 uscite. Praticamente ne ha sbagliata solo una, a York, ad un mese dal debutto. La cavalla di Karl Burke aveva in sella un Dougie Costello che ha raccontato di una emozione mai provata così; Lui fantino da ostacoli al primo G1 in piano e che ha preferito (ovviamente) il Royal Ascot in luogo del matrimonio del suo migliore amico, ha portato al palo la cavalla favorita in una corsa buttata via per certi versi dall’errante Kachy (Kyllachy) il quale sembrava padrone della contesa, salvo poi scartare verso lo steccato esterno perdendo metri preziosi ma facendo sbocciare di gioia i proprietari della femmina appartenente ad un sindacato, vincitrice di una lunghezza tonda tonda. Terzo è giunto Washington DC (Zoffany). Gli obiettivi per la femmina non sono ancora chiari. Parlando di July Cup Karl Burke ha gettato acqua sul fuoco dicendo che le ondulazioni di Newmarket non sono il massimo per una come lei che galoppa in modo rado. Casomai il pensiero è quello di correre la Sprint Cup G1 di Haydock e poi tornare ad Ascot il giorno del Champions Day. Forse meglio. Nelle Coronation Stakes G1, giusto premio alla costanza per Jean Claude Rouget il quale un anno dopo la vittoria di Ervedya, ha lanciato sul palco delle premiazioni la femmina della Al Shaqab Qemah (Danehill Dancer) (doppio nel meeting dopo Galileo Gold) facendo registrare la prima vittoria al Royal Ascot per Gregory Benoist in sella ad una cavalla che a Deauville era arrivata terza di La Cressonniere nelle Poule. E questo non fa altro che rafforzare la candidatura dell’altra di Rouget per domenica a Chantilly nel Prix de Diane. Ma al di la di questo, Ryan Moore è stato ancora oggetto di critiche per la tattica fin troppo rinunciataria in sella ad Alice Springs (Galileo), finita terza ma volando nelle fasi finali, e non riuscita nell’aggancio alla seconda Nemoralia (More Than Ready). Un pò stanca, visti gli impegni ravvicinati, la favorita Jet Setting (Fast Company), vincitrice di 1000 Ghinee Irish, appena acquistata dal China Horse Club per £1.3 milioni, e per i cui colori giallo rossi correva. I colori, certamente, hanno influito nella brutta prestazione. Si scherza, ovvio. Rouget, parlando di questo doppio 2015-2016, ha parlato di “childhood dream”. Nel resto del pomeriggio vanno registrate le vittorie numero 52 e 53 nel meeting in assoluto per Aidan O’Brien il quale, come succede ormai da tempo immemore, con i puledri ha vinto con la seconda o terza scelta. Fateci caso, soprattutto in Irlanda. La gente gioca quello con Ryan a bordo, e puffete vince quello con Seamie e Colm a 20/1. Anche al Royal hanno buttato tutti dentro con la femmina Cuff (Galileo) nelle Albany G3 sui 1200 metri, mentre a vincere è stata Brave Anna (War Front), sorella di Hit It A Bomb, a 16/1 con Seamie Heffernan a bordo, al quale sono sate inflitte 9 giornate di appiedamento ed una multa di £1250 per aver dato alla sua 12 frustate. Troppe. Da un pezzo non ci caschiamo più e ci cucchiamo il quotone. La femmina degli Stockwell, 2 vittorie su 3 in carriera, è stato un modo per celebrare la capostipite della famiglia Stockwell che ha compiuto 91 anni. Battuta una troppo rinunciataria Bletchley (Makfi) ed una buonissima Queen Kindly (Frankel), la prima figlia di Frankel a correre al Royal e piazzarsi in corse Stakes. Padre Aidan ha fatto 53 al Royal con Sword Fighter (Galileo) con Colm a bordo nel Queen’s Vase Lr grazie ad una perfetta tattica di avanguardia, nei confronti di Harbour Law (Lawman). Resta da dire del solito immenso Frankie il quale ha vinto la sua corsa numero 56 al Royal Meeting nelle King Edward VII Stakes G2 sul miglio e mezzo, comunemente conosciuto come il Derby di Ascot, in sella ad Across The Stars (Sea The Stars), decimo nel Derby G1, prima ancora terzo nel Derby Trial di Lingfield G3, il quale si è ripreso, senza gli interessi, un pò di copertina con a bordo il fantino in attività più vincente del Berkshire. Il cavallo di Sir Michael Stoute, 74 vittoria al Royal Ascot ad una lunghezza dall’immenso Sir Henry Cecil, ha battuto Beacon Rock (Galileo), capace di buona corsa in avanti, e Muntahaa (Dansili). Qemah takes Coronation as Rouget strikes again

JEAN-CLAUDE ROUGET is starting to make the Coronation Stakes his own and one year on from his victory with Ervedya he triumphed again as Qemah gave jockey Gregory Benoist a first Royal Ascot winner.

Under a dashing ride, 6-1 shot Qemah came from well off the pace to take the £226,840 first prize by a length and three-quarters from Nemoralia but, as was the case with The Gurkha on Tuesday, Ryan Moore supporters were left thinking what might have been after Alice Springs flashed home for a fast-finishing third.

Qemah had turned into the home straight similarly far back but Benoist, the retained rider in France to winning owners Al Shaqab Racing, had taken a more prudent approach by racing wide and, unlike Alice Springs, enjoyed a clear run to what turned out to be Coronation glory.

“It’s amazing for me, it’s like a dream,” said Benoist. “I can’t speak. There’s too much emotion.”

Jet Setting downed

On her previous outing Qemah had finished third to stablemate La Cressonniere in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches but this time nothing could stop her.

Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Jet Setting, bought on Monday by the China Horse Club for £1.3 million, attempted to make all the running but midway down the home straight the eventual sixth was in trouble.

By this point Alice Springs, who had been positioned near the rail by Moore, had already struggled to find room and even when angled deeper on the track she found the Jamie Spencer-ridden Ashadihan getting in her way.

She ran on strongly, as did Nemoralia, but Qemah was not for catching and scored for a prolific trainer who had also saddled the Coronation second in 2014.

‘It’s the best racing in the world’

Rouget said: “For me to do this double in this race, it’s a childhood dream, but I hope to get some more wins here because it’s the best racing in the world.

“I was very confident after the French Guineas for this race because I prefer her with a turn. She was very nervous in Deauville but today she won easily.”

Benoist added: “Before the race, we wanted to take a good position but the pace was a little bit fast for me so I took my time. Today, she had a really good finish and was really relaxed.”

Al Shaqab racing manager Harry Herbert, whose boss Sheikh Joaan saw his colours carried to victory by Galileo Gold on the opening day of the meeting, said: “This is unbelievable – a second Group 1!

“She was unlucky in the French Guineas but today. She has settled better and I’m delighted for Sheikh Joaan and Gregory Benoist. It’s just another special moment. How spoiling is this?”

Pride in Nemoralia’s display

Nemoralia’s part-owner Charles Pigram said: “She’s run her heart out and I’m so proud of her. We’ve come second in a Group 1, that’s no travesty.

“If that was firm ground today she’d have won but Qemah is a good horse, I can’t take that away from her. We’ve beat a Guineas winner and she beat Minding. She will be amazing on her ground.”

Jet Setting’s rider Shane Foley said: “She jumped and travelled but just didn’t pick up as well as she normally does. Maybe she’s coming in season?

“She had a tough race a the Curragh, so maybe it was that, but I don’t think it was the ground. She seemed to enjoy it, up to a point.”
