Un cavallo progressivo capace di costruirsi la sua miniera d’oro dopo una partenza veloce dal centro della pista, scendendo progressivamente allo steccato delle tribune con un gran cambio di marcia e tenendo la barra dritta fino a domare Massaat(Teofilo) per un Hamdan presentato da Owen Burrows, “rookie” di questa Classica, con al terzo Ribchester(Iffraaj). Quanto a Frankie. Beh, oramai abbiamo disfatto completamente la valigia degli aggettivi da attribuirgli. Sempre sul pezzo, sempre sveglio ad approfittare di un cavallo presentato al top nonostante delle voci poco incoraggianti e nonostante una valutazione da parte del betting (fino al 16/1, grazie al dio delle corse) forse troppo sbilanciata nei confronti di Air Force Blue (War Front), il convitato di pietra di queste Ghinee. Nada, nisba. Assente. Il Coolmoriano è partito senza verve, ha finito peggio. Il risultato dice 12° su 13°, battuto solo il Chapple Hyam Marcel (Lawman), vincitore casuale del RP Trophy e squagliatosi come un budino appena gli è stato chiesto al massimo. Ma gli occhi erano tutti per lo “Special” Air Force Blue. Manco Frankel era partito con una quota prossima al mezzo, ed il fatto che Padre Aidan è a quota zero in questo 2016 in Inghilterra (mentre è a quota 25% di vittorie in Irlanda) può dirla lunga sull’inizio della sua stagione. Mai vendere la pelle dell’orso prima di averlo ucciso, perchè la flotta Coolmore saprà rialzarsi, eccome. Ma quando sei bravo, bello, spavaldo, hai quel curriculum, quel look, la sciambola, il talento, gli amici famosi.. beh, questa è una figura barbina. Ci verrebbe da dire: Ciccio, svegliati. Almeno per rispetto di chi ha scommesso su di te dopo che ci hai descritto Air Force Blue come un invincibile. 

Entra l’Avvocato. Signori della Corte, è pur vero che si tratta di una prestazione, la sua, non proprio in linea con quanto fatto. Non va dimenticato che si tratta di un cavallo di mole, trovatosi ad affrontare una corsa dura dove nessuno regala niente. E nemmeno Guerino Moore poteva inventare nulla. Impressive Minding leads home O’Brien 1-2-3

Qipco 1,000 Guineas Stakes (Group 1) 1m, 3yo

HOT favourite Minding registered an impressive wide-margin success in the Qipco 1,000 Guineas, leading home Ballydoyle and Alice Springs to provide trainer Aidan O’Brien with a 1-2-3 in the first fillies’ Classic of the season.

Air Force Blue had failed to live up to his big-race billing when never making an impression in Saturday’s 2,000 Guineas, but 11-10 favourite Minding ensured the Coolmore camp would be in better spirits on Sunday evening with a thoroughly dominant display, winning by three and a half lengths.

Second-placed Ballydoyle encountered some trouble in running but could not be considered an unlucky loser, so impressive was the winner.

Kazzia was the last filly to complete the 1,000 Guineas and Oaks double in 2002 – Legatissimo was narrowly denied last year – and Minding is a best price of evens to achieve the same feat at Epsom next month.

O’Brien delight

Winning trainer Aidan O’Brien, who was winning the 1,000 Guineas for the third time following wins for Virginia Waters and Homecoming Queen, said: ”It was a marvellous result. We are delighted with them. We thought they were three very high-class fillies and that’s the way it has worked out.”

Regarding Minding and whether she would run in the Oaks, O’Brien added: “We always thought she would stay. She’s something to really look forward to.”

Moore impressed

Rider Ryan Moore, who won last year’s 1,000 Guineas aboard Legatissimo, was full of praise for Minding. He said: “She travelled well throughout the race and the result was never in any doubt. She’s as good a filly as I’ve sat on and would stay if she ran against the colts at Epsom.”

How the race was won

Lumiere, who had been the subject of positive stable vibes throughout the winter, towed the field along against the stand rail in the early stages.

Minding was always prominent under Ryan Moore and she took things up still going strongly as they passed the cutaway.

Moore asked the filly to extend on the approach to the final furlong and she responded in impressive fashion, quickly putting the result beyond doubt as she extended her advantage under a hands-and-heels drive.

Ballydoyle stayed on well for second, while Alice Springs held the challenge of Fireglow to finish third, but neither filly could offer a meaningful challenge to the impressive winner who was in a league of her own.

Strong juvenile form

Minding was a dual Group 1 winner at two, successful in the Moyglare Stud Stakes and the Dubai Fillies’ Mile.

The form of the Moyglare Stakes looks particularly strong now as Ballydoyle and Alice Springs also filled the places behind Minding in that contest.

All three fillies are daughters of super-sire Galileo, who won the Derby in 2001.
