Excellent Gold Third For Haafaguinea
Haafaguinea ran well to finish third in the G2 Dubai City Of Gold Sponsored By SkyCargo over a mile and a half on turf at Meydan, UAE on Super Saturday, March 5.
The six-year-old son of Haafhd, trained by Saeed bin Suroor and ridden by James Doyle, raced in second on the inside as Captain Morley took the field along.
He was asked to maintain his effort on the final bend and, though passed in the straight by the winner Postponed and the second Dariyan, both established Group One performers,Haafaguinea kept on well.
The Godolphin horse was beaten three lengths and a length respectively, with another five and a quarter lengths back to the fourth Balios. The winning time was a fast 2m 27.90s.
Haafaguinea has progressed through handicaps, running in his first Group race the previous time when second to another Godolphin horse, Tryster, in the G3 Dubai Millennium Stakes Sponsored By Al Tayer Motors at Meydan on February 18.
Saeed bin Suroor said: “Haafaguinea ran well to finish third behind two very good horses.
“We will see how he comes out of this race but we may step him up to two miles for the Dubai Gold Cup (G2, turf, Meydan, March 26) on World Cup night.”
Jungle Cat Just Touched Off In Meydan Sprint
Jungle Cat, racing over five furlongs for the first time, was caught in the closing stages and beaten a nose despite rallying well in the G3 Meydan Sprint Sponsored By Arabian Adventures on turf at Meydan, UAE, on Super Saturday, March 5.
The four-year-old Iffraaj colt, trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by William Buick, soon raced prominently and enjoyed a narrow lead with a quarter-mile remaining.
He still held the advantage until deep inside the final furlong when Fityaan challenged on his outside and Sole Power on his inside.
Fityaan edged to the front as Jungle Cat came back again and Sole Power finished well. The winning margin was the narrowest available, with a short-head between second and third, and Fityaan hit the line in a fast 57.07s.
The first three were clear of the fourth of the 11 runners.
Charlie Appleby commented: “I was delighted with Jungle Cat today and he has booked himself a ticket for the Al Quoz Sprint (G1, 5f, turf, Meydan, March 26).
“It was a huge performance and I thought we were the winner a furlong from home. Sole Power came with his usual late dash and Fityaan has half-mugged us on the line.
“Jungle Cat has backed up his first run of the year and we can look forward to rolling the dice again on Dubai World Cup night.”
Jungle Cat, a smart two-year-old, had raced previously 10 times over six furlongs and once over seven furlongs.
He quickened smartly for an impressive victory in a six-furlong turf handicap at Meydan on January 28, his first race for over seven months.
Jungle Cat lost a shoe after emerging from the stalls in the G1 Commonwealth Cup over six furlongs at Royal Ascot, UK, in June but ran much better when second over the same trip in a Newbury Listed race the previous month.
He put up some fine efforts in 2014, notably when beaten a nose by subsequent champion sprinter Muhaarar in the G2 Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Gimcrack Stakes at York.

Tryster uses turbo finish to claim Jebel Hatta

Jebel Hatta Sponsored By Emirates (Group 1) 1m1f, turf, 3yo+
TRYSTER once again unleashed a devastating turn of foot to remain unbeaten on the turf at Meydan and claim a first Group 1.

The Charlie Appleby-trained five-year-old shot to prominence last season when racking up a five-timer on the all-weather which culminated with victory in the Easter Classic.
This winter he shipped to Dubai and following victory in a Group 3 on his Dubai debut, improved again to record his ninth win from 12 career starts and first at the top level.
William Buick was happy to sit out back through the early stages as Ertijaal took the field along and as the field fanned out to challenge at the top of the straight, Buick let Tryster go.
He went through the gears to claim an ultimately easy victory from outsider Farrier in second with the pace-setting Ertijaal holding on for third.
Victory sets up a scintillating clash in the Dubai Turf with last year’s winner Solow, and Buick is a big of his ride, calling Tryster “breathtaking”.
He added: “I’ve ridden a lot of horses who have a great turn of foot but I can safely say I’ve never ridden one like him.
“He’s had a great prep and we’re looking forward to him on World Cup night.”

Al Maktoum Challenge R3 Sponsored By Emirates (Group 1) 1m2f, dirt, 3yo+
SPECIAL FIGHTER completed a huge treble on Super Saturday for Musabah Al Muhairi when running his rivals ragged.
In the previous two rounds of the Al Maktoum Challenge the five-year-old had finished sixth, but racing handily made a big difference as he kept finding in front for Fernando Jara.
The race had centred around how Keen Ice would perform, the only horse to defeat American Pharoah last season with a surprise win in the Travers Stakes.
But the Dale Romans-trained colt was unable to get involved and was well beaten, like the rest of the field.
Gun Pit finished best of the rest in second, with Faulkner third.
One of Muhairi’s other winners, Fitjaan, was also a surprise victor when just denying Jungle Cat and Sole Power in the Group 3 Meydan Sprint.
The opening leg of the treble was Muarrab in the Mahab al Shimaal.
Muhairi reported that Special Fighter had pulled off shoes on his last run, and said: “This is a big night for me, tonight he dictated the pace.”
The World Cup is next for Special Fighter.

Special Fighter Upsets, Keen Ice Fades in UAE
Racing comfortably throughout, Special Fighter (IRE) led at every call and overwhelmed rivals in the stretch to score a 4 1/2-length victory in the $400,000 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 Sponsored by Emirates (UAE-I) March 5 at Meydan, spoiling the Dubai debut of last year’s Travers Stakes (gr. I) winner Keen Ice.
Special Fighter, a 5-year-old son ofTeofilo (IRE), secured the first group stakes victory of his career and bounced back from a sixth-place effort in the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2 sponsored by EGA (UAE-II) where he finished 12 lengths behind winnerFrosted.
While Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed al Maktoum’s Special Fighter thrived on the front end under Fernando Jara in Round 3, Keen Ice faded turning for home after stalking from fourth in the far turn. The Travers winner ended up seventh in the prep for the $10 million Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) March 26 at Meydan.
Like the Dubai World Cup, the Al Maktoum Challenge R3 is contested at 2,000 meters (about 1 1/4 miles). Trainer Musabah Al Muhairi, who picked up his third win on the Super Saturday card with Special Fighter, said his horse was compromised in the Al Maktoum Challenge R2 when he lost shoes. Bred by Darley, Special Fighter completed Saturday’s race in 2:03.11.
Jara said Special Fighter relaxed well on the lead early, allowing him to deliver a strong finish.
Special Fighter was followed home by Gun Pit (AUS) second, Faulkner (GB) third, and last year’s U.A.E. Derby sponsored by Saeed & Mohammed Al Naboodah Group (UAE-II) winner Mubtaahij fourth. Mubtaahij also finished fourth in last year’s Belmont Stakes (gr. I).
Longshot Special Fighter returned $68 to win in U.S. pools and $14.20 to place/show.
Golden Soul, runner-up in the 2013 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), finished last in Saturday’s field of 12.
The Super Saturday card, which features preps for the Dubai World Cup card, opened with Kentucky-bred Market Rally easily winning the $250,000 Al Bastakiya sponsored by Emirates Skwards, a prep for the U.A.E. Derby.
The son of Unbridled’s Song registered a 4 3/4-length win over Lazzam in the field of four going 1,900 meters. Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s Market Rally entered Saturday’s race off a six-length score in the UAE Two Thousand Guineas Sponsored by Gulf News (UAE-III) Feb. 11 at Meydan.
Godolphin Racing’s Tryster will enter the Dubai Turf (UAE-I) on a roll after registering a third straight win overall and second straight group score on the Meydan turf after scoring a 1 1/2-length victory in Saturday’s $300,000 Jebel Hatta Sponsored by Emirates.
Tryster, a 5-year-old son of Shamardal, secured the first group I victory of his career Saturday. After the race, winning rider William Buick said of any horse he has ridden, Tryster has the best turn of foot.

R3C5 – Dubaï City Of Gold (Gr.2) 2.400 mètres
Postponed, transport express
Non-partant : Rembrandt Van Rijn (3) Makzon (7)
