American Pharoah Unanimous Horse of the Year
The Zayat family celebrates their big night at the Eclipse Awards.
There was a decided lack of suspense in the voting that awarded 2015 Horse of the Year and 3-year-old male honors toAmerican Pharoah Jan. 16.
In fact the only question was if American Pharoah would be a unanimous Horse of the Year choice. He was, securing all 261 votes. He also secured all 261 votes in the 3-year-old male division.
There have been residual thrills and suspense hanging in the air surrounding Thoroughbred racing from seven months earlier when, on a glorious New York day and on the sport’s biggest stage, American Pharoah brought racing out of its equivalent of wandering 40 years in the desert (all right, 37 to be exact) with his capture of the Triple Crown in dominating fashion at the Belmont Stakes presented by DraftKings (gr. I).
That victory, which sent shivers through the assembled 90,000 and set off waves of celebratory hugs, kisses, and tears in all corners where horses are still revered, still hovers like a halo above the sport, bestowing upon it a sense of relevance in the national consciousness that had been lost through the last decades. For this horse was not only the swiftest, but, like Zenyatta before him, possesses also a consciousness that lifts the breed and the spirits of everyone connected to it through either work or affection.
American Pharoah, on the strength of his racetrack exploits and his kindness to any and all human visitors, rises above even the lofty throne of Horse of the Year.
Brought back in 2015 by trainer Bob Baffert from an injury that prevented him from competing in the 2014 Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I), the Zayat Stables homebred (who had been named champion 2-year-old male despite missing the Juvenile) won grade I races at Oaklawn Park, Churchill Downs, Pimlico Race Course,Belmont Park, Monmouth Park, and Keeneland, often traveling back and forth from his Southern California base. Asked whether he’d ever sent another horse that many miles, Baffert replied, “No. Nobody has.”
“I was dealing with a freak of nature,” the Hall of Fame trainer continued. “His resilience is what separated him. He could take a lot and keep on bringing it. He’s the only one I could get away with putting on a plane that many times. I’d get him back after a race, go easy with him for a week, and then he’d go back to training and the racing hadn’t taken anything out of him at all.
“Nothing affected him. He ran on different surfaces; muddy, sloppy, fast, deep. Post position was never a problem. He’s the only horse I’ve led over there since Point Given where I knew I had them over a barrel.”
The record will show that American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile —Littleprincessemma, by Yankee Gentleman ) returned from his leg injury to win the Rebel Stakes (gr. II) in the slop March 14 by 61⁄4 lengths and, back at Oaklawn Park four weeks later, took the Arkansas Derby (gr. I) April 11 by eight lengths. He trained brilliantly in the weeks leading up to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), but seemed to be spinning his wheels in the race. After going at least seven-wide on the final turn, American Pharoah struggled mightily to pass Firing Line, getting about 30 cracks of the whip from rider Victor Espinoza before holding the runner-up at bay by a length. The Derby reminded us all why it is so difficult to win the Triple Crown.
The following two legs would not be nearly as hard, although a monsoon that blew through Baltimore certainly added intrigue minutes before the Xpressbet.com Preakness Stakes (gr. I). American Pharoah, indifferent to the conditions, defeated Tale of Verve by seven lengths, setting up high drama three weeks later at Belmont.
But where others such as Silver Charm, Real Quiet, Charismatic, Smarty Jones, War Emblem, Big Brown, I’ll Have Another, and California Chrome had faltered in New York, American Pharoah rose to the occasion, leading from flag fall to wire, finishing 51⁄2 lengths better than Frosted. Any doubts about Eclipse Awards ended with the celebration in New York.
American Pharoah made another cross-country trip for the William Hill Haskell Invitational Stakes (gr. I) two months after the Belmont and that event turned into a $1.1 million walk in the park for him as he defeated Keen Ice by 21⁄4 lengths. With a stallion deal already signed and sealed, American Pharoah was fast drawing to the close of his racing career, and his connections sought to showcase him as much as possible. So, four weeks after the Haskell and enduring another journey from the Pacific to the Atlantic, American Pharoah took his traveling show to Saratoga, where he was showered with rock-star status. But after being hounded early by Frosted in the Travers Stakes (gr. I), American Pharoah finally hit the wall, andKeen Ice defeated him by three-quarters of a length.
Ending his career at Keeneland in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I), American Pharoah regained his form, and, benefiting from the defections of other speed horses Beholder, Smooth Roller, and Liam’s Map , put on one more wire-to-wire show, crushing the Classic by 61⁄2 lengths. He won seven of eight races and $8,288,800 on the season.
“I am still pinching myself that it all really happened,” said owner Ahmed Zayat shortly before the Eclipse Awards. “You reflect on how incredible this horse ran and how kind he has been. He is a dream come true, and he uplifted the entire industry. He excited a nation and gave everyone hope that the Triple Crown could be done again. He is a gift from God to all of us.”
Baffert harkened back to Point Given’s losing the Derby in 2001 and remembered being in shock.
“I didn’t think I was ever going to lead one up there like him again,” Baffert said. “Never in my lifetime. And then to get one like this, it’s pretty special. I can’t compare other horses to him. His action; everything about him. He could handle everything physically and mentally. He kept it together and kept the weight on. There wasn’t an ounce of fat on him. He was made perfectly for a racehorse.”

Carberry fall rules him out of Cheltenham again

JOCKEY Paul Carberry’s hopes of a return to action in the next few weeks, and of riding at the Cheltenham Festival, have been dashed after he suffered another fracture to his left leg in a fall while riding near his home in Co Meath.
Carberry, who has been out of action since fracturing his left femur in a fall at the Listowel festival in September, revealed to the Racing Post on Sunday: “I was out riding on Friday when I had a fall. It’s the same leg I fractured at Listowel but the crack is higher up the leg and away from the original break.
“I had an operation in Blanchardstown Hospital yesterday, when they took out the original rod that was in my leg and put in a longer one. It’s not as serious as the Listowel fracture nor as sore as that injury was.
“I was hoping to be back soon as the original injury was almost mended, but this is going to delay things. Unfortunately, I’m going to miss Cheltenham, which is very disappointing.”
Carberry, a former Irish champion, has ridden 14 Cheltenham Festival winners and enjoyed the biggest success of his career when landing the Grand National on Bobbyjo, trained by his father Tommy, in 1999. Noel Meade’s long-time stable jockey rode Harchibald to win five Grade 1s over hurdles.

La seconda edizione della Irish Thoroughbred Marketing (ITM) Irish Stallion Trail si svolgerà tra Venerdì 22 e Sabato 23 gennaio 2016. Il percorso, studiato per gli appassionati ed operatori, si svolgerà in un fine settimana intenso tra il Goffs Thyestes Handicap Chase di Gowran Park del 21 Gennaio, ed il BHP Insurances Irish Champion Hurdle di Leopardstown di Domenica 24 Gennaio. Un percorso ideale da abbinare ad una breve vacanza in Irlanda nella quale sarà possibile visitare alcuni dei migliori stalloni del mondo, residenti in Irlanda ovviamente. Gli stalloni irlandesi sono considerati come depositari di alcune delle migliori linee di sangue in tutto il mondo e la loro progenie dimostra di come sono i più ricercati in ogni angolo del globo. Ventotto allevamenti da County Wexford fino a County Down apriranno le porte poco prima dell’inizio della stagione di monta, dando la possibilità anche agli allevatori di assistere ad alcune opportunità interessanti.

A distanza di qualche giorno, riproponiamo un interessante resoconto di quanto hanno realizzato i nostri fantini lontano dall’Italia nel corso del 2015. Si tratta solo di una prima puntata, mancano ancora all’appello altri prestigiosi jockey qui non menzionati visto che siamo partiti da quelli che hanno effettuato vere e proprie scelte di vita; la seconda ve la mostreremo nei prossimi giorni ed è uscito proprio sabato 16 Gennaio sull’edizione trisettimanale del Trotto & Turf per la cui concessione vi riproponiamo questo qui di seguito. Italians, a volte necessità, a volte virtù. Condizionati da un ippica che non valorizza ma demoralizza, molte professionalità se ne sono andate all’estero a cercare fortuna. Alcuni l’hanno trovata, altri si sono semplicemente stabilizzati in un sistema che funziona, altri fanno esperienze trimestrali, semestrali o annuali per cambiare la propria visione del mondo. Siamo ad inizio anno ed è utile vedere come si sono comportati i nostri alfieri, e si tratta di un lavoraccio perchè vanno sviscerati molti dati ed il rischio di incappare in un errore è sempre dietro l’angolo.
- Sicuramente, il migliore della stagione all’estero è stato Mirco Demuro il quale dopo aver acquisito la licenza ufficiale per montare nel circuito JRA, ha ottenuto 118 vittorie in stagione, con una media del 19% circa, e la leadership delle somme vinte con ¥2,803,146,000 al traguardo, l’equivalente di oltre 2 milioni di euro. Tecnicamente indimenticabili i 4 G1 dominati: Con Duramente ha vinto le 2000 Ghinee ed il Derby giapponese, con Sambista la Champions Cup e con Leontes le Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes. Senza dimenticare le altre 6 pattern vinte in stagione, e quelli sfiorati di un muso. Il prossimo anno sarà quello della definitiva consacrazione, probabilmente, e partirà per vincere la Classifica visto che pur rendendo 3 mesi, è arrivato ad un passo dal titolo. “Non avrei potuto chiedere di meglio, è andata davvero benissimo e qui mi sento come a casa. Non so cosa chiedere al 2016, sperare di farlo diventare migliore è difficile, ma ci spero e parto carico per la nuova avventura. Il 2015 mi ha regalato anche la chance di Duramente, che si è fatto male, ma nelle ultime settimane ha recuperato dall’infortunio e si è rimesso in carreggiata. Ecco, lui è un cavallo forte e volevamo puntare all’Arc, spero intanto recuperi bene ed il mio 2016 parte con questa aspettativa”. The Magic ha iniziato il suo 2016 a Nakayama dove ha subito ottenuto una vittoria, 2 secondi posti ed un terzo in G3 nel Nakayama Kimpai su Flucky. Nella seconda e terza settimana ne ha vinte altre 4. Insomma, ha cominciato a rullare. Il suo omologo francese CP Lemaire ha attaccato subito la classifica con una tripletta in giornata, e questo sarà il leit motiv della stagione. Da lontano, ma lo osserveremo.

Ci scusiamo per questa settimana di latitanza dalle news che, in effetti, non è che siano state di grandissimo livello. Però noi non vogliamo lasciarvi a digiuno e dunque facciamo un post nel quale si descrivono quelle più succose, insomma le immancabili nella testa di un appassionato. Certo, molte le conoscerete già..
- Innanzitutto diciamo che questa è una delle settimane verità per l’ippica italiana, in relazione al galoppo. Si terrà infatti il Comitato Patterndecisivo per l’assegnazione dei grandi appuntamenti del 2016 in Europa. L’Italia è in bilico su alcune questioni, la più pruriginosa riguarda il Presidente della Repubblica G1 per il quale si tenterà il miracolo di trattenerlo a status di G1. Anche se, alla fine, un declassamento permetterebbe di lavorare con maggiore serenità e reggerebbe certamente meglio. Diciamo solo che il Derby di quest’anno ha realizzato una buona media. Per il resto attendiamo i rating che daranno contenuto alle classifiche.
- Questione Montepremi: Alla fine il taglio annunciato ci sarà, anche se suddiviso con quello che dovranno percepire gli ippodromi. Il Montepremi 2016 saarà di 89,5 milioni di euro, in calo del 10% rispetto i (presunti) 97 milioni del 2015. Ancora promesse di rilancio non mantenute e quei famigerati tagli. Il caso è chiuso. Seguiranno approfondimenti.
- Pensiamo a quello che accade in Inghilterra. Qualche giorno fa è stato reso noto che il meeting del Royal Ascot 2016 subirà un boost in alto dal punto di vista del montepremi con una nuova iniezione di £1 milione. Alla fine verranno distruibuiti £6,58 milioni, con un +18% rispetto al 2015. Come minimo si correrà per £80,000 (nel 2015 era £60,000), poi le Queen Anne saranno dotate di £600,000 da £375,000, le Prince Of Wales da £525,000 saliranno a £750,000. E non è tutto: Sarà costruito un nuovo tondino per il dissellaggio dal costo di £700,000. Piovono soldi.
- In ottica europea andrà sicuramente osservato un cavallo proveniente dall’Australia: Si chiama Vancouver (Medaglia D’Oro) ed in patria ha vinto il Golden Slipper G1 per i 2 anni. Il cavallo è gestito dal Coolmore e dal China Horse Club, sempre più in sintonia. Prima era allenato da Gai Watherhouse, ora sarà allenato da Padre Aidan a Ballydoyle. Il Coolmore ha avuto in passato esempi celebri a supporto della tesi: Haradasunprima, negli ultimi anni So You Think e Starspangledbanner, campioni affermatisi anche in Europa.
- In Francia la lotta al vertice per la cravache d’or 2015 si è definitivamente chiusa. A sancire le sorti della sfida è stata una parità tra Cristophe Soumillon e Pierre Charles Boudot. Una sfida decisa a suon di carte bollate, ricorsi e controricorsi. L’ultimo era quello di Boudot per un distanziamento di fine Dicembre. France Galop ha respinto e sancito le 179 vittorie per tutti e due. L’altra notizia dalla Francia è quella che riguarda il problema ddi dove disputare le Classiche, vista l’indisponibilità di Longchamp. France Galop ha deciso di far correre le Ghinee francesi, le Poules, il 16 Maggio a Deauville.
- A Meydan è andata in scena la seconda giornata, non tanto frizzante a dire la verità. Ma fa sempre piacere un vegliardo come Reynaldothewizard (Speightstown) imporsi in quel modo, a 10 anni, nelle Dubawi Stakes Lr sui 1200 metri. Satish Seemar, che lo allena, ha vinto anche in apertura con l’altro vecchione Tiz Now Tiz Then, 11 anni, nell’handicap di apertura e poi con More Aspen nell’altra Listed intitolata a Singspiel. C’erano anche i trial per le Ghinee. In quello per femmine ha vinto molto bene Polar River (Congrats) per 5 lunghezze, mentre tra i maschi Godolphin ha vinto con Steady Pace (Dark Angel).

- Ad inizio Gennaio cominciano a nascere i primi figli degli stalloni entrati in razza lo scorso anno. In Canada è venuto al mondo il primo figlio del campione Magician (Galileo), nato presso il Curraghmore Farm in Canada.Il Lanwades Stud ed il Gestüt Görlsdorf hanno annunciato il primo foal venuto al mondo per l’impressionante vincitore del Derby tedesco Sea The Moon (Sea The Stars). Si tratta di una femmina nata al Kingwood Stud in Inghilterra. A proposito di stalloni, nei prossimi giorni faremo un report di quelli che nel 2016 avranno i primi figli in pista. C’è ovviamente attesa per i primi Frankel anche se alle aste ci sono state reazioni tiepide. Anticipiamo che della prima annata di produzione ce ne sono 98 in vita, 23 ne sono stati venduti. Due di questi ce li ha Roger Varian, e che puledri! Una è la femmina prodotto della campionessaDanedream e si chiama Nothing But Dreams. L’altro è un figlio di Frankel e Zomaradah, dunque un fratello di Dubawi, che si chiama Watchman. Olè!
