Sutherland to make second riding comeback
USA: Former jockey Chantal Sutherland is set to come out of retirement for a second time and return to race-riding next month.
Sutherland, 39, had been among the most high-profile female riders in the world landing three Grade 1s on Game On Dude, including the Hollywood Gold Cup and Santa Anita Handicap, and also partnering the Bob Baffert-trained runner in the Dubai World Cup.
However, Sutherland was controversially replaced on favourite Game On Dude before the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Classic and announced her retirement in October the same year, only to return to the saddle in June 2013.
Her second stint in the saddle lasted little more than a year and she retired again in July 2014 after which she started selling real estate in southern California.
Santa Anita aim
A third spell in the saddle beckons though for Sutherland, who told the Daily Racing Form she had been thinking about returning to riding for six months.
“I’ve missed it so much,” said Sutherland, who is aiming to be back riding by the start of Santa Anita’s winter meeting on December 26.
Sutherland added she may ride at Los Alamitos before Santa Anita to help her get back in shape. She has reportedly been working at the track since September for Baffert’s former assistant Mike Marlow.
