Treve: on the drift for the first time since stunning Prix Vermeille win

Treve support ‘dried up’ before historic Arc bid
PUNTERS’ confidence in Treve’s bid to secure a historic third Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe victory appeared to be wavering as three firms made her odds-against on Thursday.
Betway went odds-against about Criquette Head-Maarek’s wondermare on Wednesday, and on Thursday Paddy Power, Ladbrokes and Betfair all pushed the five-year-old out to 11-10 for Sunday’s showdown.

Treve, who is chasing an unprecedented hat-trick of Arc wins, strolled to an emphatic six-length win in the Prix Vermeille at Longchamp last month and has been all the rage for the 1m4f Group 1 in the past few weeks.
However, Thursday’s market drift suggested confidence was beginning to falter in places, with the warm, dry weather in Paris and the confirmed inclusion of Derby winner Golden Horn contributory factors. Golden Horn was trimmed by Coral and William Hill, who both went 4-1 (from 9-2).
Ladbrokes’ David Williams said his firm expected Treve to continue to drift in the market prior to Sunday afternoon.
Williams said: “Support for Treve has dried up as quickly as the Longchamp turf. She’s now odds-against and likely to drift again between now and Sunday afternoon.”
Weather set fair
The ground remains good to soft at Longchamp with officials predicting that it will become good during the course of the weekend.
The national weather service, France Meteo, believes that Paris will avoid the passage of wet weather moving from the south west of the country to the east on Saturday evening.
A spokesman said: “The race has fallen very well weather-wise and Sunday afternoon should be bright and warm.”
New Bay (left): able to break well according to his trainer Andre Fabre

New Bay better than bare form says Arc king Fabre
ARC maestro Andre Fabre is banking on New Bay’s pace, propensity to break well from the stalls and his untapped potential to bridge a ratings gap as the trainer seeks an eighth victory in Europe’s most valuable contest.
With final declarations on Friday for the €5 million feature at Longchamp on Sunday, 17 rivals are still standing between Treve and a historic third triumph in the Qatar-backed contest, chief among them Derby winners New Bay and Golden Horn.
New Bay was easy to back on Thursday, with William Hill going 11-2 (from 9-2), although so too was favourite Treve, with Paddy Power, Betfair Sportsbook and Ladbrokes all joining Betway in offering 11-10 (from evens or 4-5).
With Golden Horn solid at 9-2, punters evidently feel Treve is by no means over the line, and Fabre offered encouragement yesterday to fans of New Bay, who landed the Prix du Jockey Club on good to soft and was mighty impressive in the Niel on much softer ground last month.
The trainer said: “New Bay is one of those horses who is able to be competitive over a mile, so you would say he has natural speed. He seemed to still have that in the trial. He is able to break well, which is also important in a big field.”
Asked to compare New Bay’s official rating of 119 with that of Derby winner Golden Horn (130), Fabre admitted the discrepancy was difficult to ignore, but suggested his colt is better than his bare form.
“It is a concern but those ratings don’t tell everything,” he said. “Over time I have learned to respect the ratings, but the interesting thing about New Bay is not what he beat but the visual impression he created. I have been impressed by him in his last three races.”
