Shadwell Estate Co. bought a War Front filly for $1.45 million on day one of the Keeneland September yearling sale.
Offered by Mr. and Mrs. Wayne T. Sweezey’s Timber Town, the filly is the first foal out of the winning Galileo mare Betterbetterbetter, a three-quarters sister to classic winner Irish classic winner Yesterday and group I winner and Irish classic-placed Quarter Moon, who is the dam of Irish group I winner Diamondsandrubies and four other stakes-placed runners. Irish-bred Betterbetterbetter was group III-placed in Ireland
The bay filly, a January 16 foal, was bred in Kentucky by Mandy Pope’s Whisper Hill Farm.
An emotional Pope told Shadwell manager Rick Nichols: “You have made a dream of mine come true, to sell a horse like that. It’s the first time ever for me, and thank you so much, and I’m so glad y’all have her. I know she’ll have a wonderful home. I’m just so thrilled I’m going to cry. I’ve been more nervous about this than I have about running a horse.”
Nichols said filly likely would go to England but that this would be Sheikh Hamdan’s decision.
Pope spent $5.2 million for Betterbetterbetter at the 2013 Fasig-Tipon Niovember sale with the filly in utero.
“That’s what I’ve said the past year: I want to be known for a while for racing good horses and selling good horses, not just spending the money,” Pope said. “This is where it pays off that tells me I’ve been doing a good thing in buying some nice horses. I’m just thrilled to death.
“She has a bit of an attitude. She’s her own girl. … When she was here being shown, she and Wayne kind of developed a love affair, and Wayne showed her, because she loved Wayne and she would do anything he wanted her to do. She has a lot of personality, as does Betterbetterbetter.”
