Gleneagles: “He would not want the top to start shifting”

O’Brien wants quick ground for Gleneagles
AIDAN O’BRIEN has spelt out the pressures he faces finding suitable conditions for Gleneagles as he prepares the dual Guineas hero for a potential clash with Golden Horn in the Qipco Irish Champion Stakes.

Gleneagles missed the Qatar Sussex Stakes at Goodwood and the Juddmonte International at York because of concerns about the surface and O’Brien is worried the weather might derail his latest opportunity at Leopardstown on Saturday.
Speaking at Galway on Wednesday evening, the trainer said: “It’s very hard to call. The forecast is terrible for Leopardstown I believe – what can we do? We’ll declare them in the morning and wait and see.”
Earlier in the day, Gleneagles was left in Sunday’s Prix du Moulin at Longchamp with stablemates Sir Isaac Newton, War Envoy and Cougar Mountain, but O’Brien said the French declaration rules mean the alternative race is not a viable option.
“We realise that we now cannot declare in two places at the one time so he cannot run in France, as he will be declared for Leopardstown,” he said.
“You can’t be declared in two places at the one time in France. That’s the rule, what can you do? Obviously we want to go to Leopardstown.”
The Leopardstown ground was described as good to firm on Wednesday but Met Eireann, the Irish National Meteorological Service, is predicting the greater Dublin area could be hit by heavy rain on Friday evening with amounts between 20-30mm.
“It wouldn’t be fair to run him [Gleneagles] unless it is good or better,” O’Brien said. “He’s a fast horse, there’s no doubt he’s a genuine miler – obviously 1m2f is not ideal but you have no idea about the trip.
“He would not want the top to start shifting. His action is too low, he’s too quick.”
Were Gleneagles, general 4-1 third favourite behind Golden Horn (15-8) and Free Eagle (11-4), to miss the Irish Champion, Found could be in line to take his place.
“The filly will be left in. She could run if the ground goes against Gleneagles,” O’Brien added.
“The ground would be a mess for Air Force Blue [in the National Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday] if it turns wet.”

Tac De Boistron: won nine of his 37 races

Top-level stayer Tac De Boistron retired
MARCO BOTTI has paid tribute to smart stayer Tac De Boistron, the dual Group 1 winner who was retired on Wednesday.
An eight year-old son of Take Risks, Tac De Boistron won nine of his 37 starts and two of those victories came at the top level in the Prix Royal-Oak in 2013 and 2014.
His last appearance came in the Gold Cup at Ascot in June when, with conditions faster than he would like, the French-bred gelding finished last of 12.
‘Brave character’
Botti said: “It is good for the horse that he is retiring in one piece. He owes us nothing and has had earned a wonderful retirement. We are lucky that we have been graced with such a tough warrior.
“He has had some niggles that we haven’t been happy with and it is testament to his strong, brave character that he has kept training into his twilight years.”
Tac De Boistron began his career in France and was bought by Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock to race down under, but things did not work out so he was sent to Newmarket to be trained by Botti in 2013.
A pleasure to train
He regained his best form and was always a threat in big staying races, especially with cut in the ground.
“He will be retired to the paddocks and will be well cared for for the rest of his life,” Botti added on his website. “It has been a pleasure to train him for Darren Dance and the Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock syndicate and we’ve had fun.
“The plan was for one last hurrah in the Prix Royal-Oak. However, it just seemed unfair on the horse to keep persevering.”
