Prince Gibraltar gets back on Arc trail
Report, Germany: Sunday, Baden-Baden: Grosser Preis Von Baden (Group 1) 1m4f, 3yo+
PRINCE GIBRALTAR is again on the trail of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, in which he was seventh last year, after a comfortable success in the Grosser Preis von Baden.

The four-year-old was ridden with extreme confidence by Fabrice Veron, who held him up in last as Weltmacht set a strong pace, chased by the other filly in the field, Nightflower, who went on a furlong and a half out.
Veron brought the blinkered Prince Gibraltar on the outside and the Rock Of Gibraltar colt showed an excellent turn of foot to sprint past Nightflower 100 yards from home to win going away by a length and three-quarters. Sirius ran on well for third.
Prince Gibraltar’s form this season has not been inspiring but the Arc has always been the target and he is no forlorn hope judged on this performance, especially if the ground comes up soft in four weeks’ time. He is rated a 40-1 shot with William Hill.
Veron, riding his first Group 1 winner, said: “The strong pace was just what we wanted and he flew the final furlong.”
Arc Sale entry
Trainer Jean-Claude Rouget, speaking from Longchamp, said: “He’s good going left-handed, which is why we went to York and then Baden-Baden.
“At York last time he pulled himself up slightly in front. He’ll run in the Arc and he’s entered in the Arc Sale on the eve of the race – he’ll go through the ring with that entry. I could see him doing well in Australia.”
Owner Jean-Francois Gribomont was delighted with the success, remembering the last time he had come to Baden-Baden he won the Goldene Peitsche 18 years ago with Don’t Worry Me.
Prix Foy for Ito
The €250,000 race lost some of its appeal with the late withdrawal of the main German hope Ito, who was found to be running a temperature.
“I don’t think it’s anything serious,” said trainer Jean-Pierre Carvalho.
Ito is still in the Arc and could run in the Prix Foy on Sunday.

Toormore gets it right this time in Turkey
Report: Turkey, Sunday. Veliefendi: International Topkapi Trophy (Group 2) 1m, 3yo+
TOORMORE (Richard Hannon/James Doyle) wiped away the disappointment of 12 months ago when proving a class apart in the feature race of Turkey’s international meeting.

A below-par third when sent off long odds-on in the valuable race last year, the colt never had a moment of worry as he pulled clear under James Doyle to register a comprehensive victory.
Success in a race worth £209,302 to the winner capped a profitable weekend for Godolphin, who won two Group contests at the course on Saturday.
It also rewarded the long-term planning of Hannon, who pinpointed a return to Turkey earlier in the year despite Toormore’s poor run on his first visit.
Back to winning ways
After a winless Classic campaign, a change of tactics has been adopted for the champion two-year-old of 2013 and Doyle again implemented them by riding his mount prominently.
He tracked leader Golden Tower for much of the contest and although he cut across the pace-setter down the home straight the interference happened a long way out and did not affect the result.
Shifting Power, Hannon’s other runner, finished fourth behind Perfect Warrior and Yildirimbey.
While it was not a vintage performance from Toormore, who got warm and over-raced in the early stages, it was another step in the right direction after he ended a long search for victory in the Group 2 Lennox Stakes at Glorious Goodwood in July.
Toormore holds an entry for the Qipco Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and the majority of bookmakers left his price untouched at 20-1.
Off on his travels
“It was a hot day and he got warm, but he won very well,” said Hannon.
“He’s in the QEII, but you’d have to think Hong Kong is an option. I will speak to the Godolphin team and he will go where they want but he is definitely a horse who travels well.”
It was not long before Hannon was celebrating again as Orvar rounded off a clean sweep for British trainers in the big races on the card with victory in the Trakya (Thrace) Trophy, a local Group 3 for two-year-olds over 6f.
Hannon added: “Orvar was very professional, it is asking a lot of a two-year-old to travel them this far but the prize-money was very good so we thought we would try and he did it well.”
