Supplementing Dick ‘an easy decision’ – Gosden
JOHN GOSDEN has described paying £75,000 to add a pacemaker for Golden Horn into the field for the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes next Wednesday as “an easy decision”.

On Thursday morning the Derby and Eclipse winner’s seven-year-old stablemate Dick Doughtywylie was added to the York contest to ensure an even tempo, just as he does at home.
‘The obvious candidate’
Gosden said: “It was an easy decision to make as we could not see what else was going to make the running and we want an even pace over ten furlongs, not a four furlong dash.
“Dick Doughtywylie was the obvious candidate as he has led all the greats in their work at home such as The Fugue and Kingman and now does the same job for Golden Horn.”
Last time out at Sandown Golden Horn was forced into making his own running when nothing else wanted to go on in the Eclipse, something that will not be repeated on the Knavesmire.
Tactical advantage
On the added tactical flexibility running a pacemaker gives Golden Horn, Gosden added: “We weren’t frightened of making the running but all horses prefer to be led.
“If you lead in races like this you get other horses attacking you four furlongs out before you have to fight them off again at the furlong pole and your race could be run by the time the line comes when someone else swoops late and picks up the pieces.
“It’s a very sporting decision by Mr Oppenheimer and we are looking forward to the race.”
York going change
York have changed their going description to good, good to firm in places after 10mm of rainfall in last 24 hours up to 8.00am. Conditions are currently cloudy with light drizzle, the radar shows the rain abating by mid morning.
The Met Office forecast a risk of heavy, localised, thundery rain passing through region on Friday, with conditions dry, fresher and with sunny spells from Saturday through to Tuesday.
