Super Solow set to shine in Sussex Stakes
BIGSTONE produced an upset when winning the Sussex Stakes for France in 1993 and it will certainly be a shock for many if Solowdoes not become the first French-trained winner since then at Goodwood on Wednesday.
The last 18 months have been full of success for Solow, with the five-year-old winning seven times in a row including in this year’s Dubai Turf and at Royal Ascot in the Queen Anne Stakes.

The grey’s performance in the Queen Anne secured his position as leading older miler in Europe and while the anticipated clash with star three-year-old Gleneagles has been scuppered by the rain, the chance to watch Solow do his thing again will provide plenty of excitement.
Racegoers will be hoping Solow can produce a perform more similar to his electric run in Dubai instead of his more workmanlike win at Royal Ascot and the recent wet weather should help according to trainer Freddy Head.
“If there is some give in the ground it will be a big help for him as he has won on heavy. I also think that Goodwood will suit him better than the stiff mile at Ascot,” Head said.
“The ground at Ascot was a bit firm for him but I still believe that the Queen Anne form is pretty strong. Some of the big name horses may have run a little below par but that was not Solow’s fault and Esoterique [the runner-up] is a very good filly on her day.”
Chief rival to the odds-on favourite is Night Of Thunder, who finished fifth in the Queen Anne Stakes, while there is also plenty of confidence behind the chances of Arod.
David Redvers, racing manager for Arod’s owner Qatar Racing, said: “Arod is in a great spot at the moment. If it was fast ground I would be seriously bullish. We’ll have to wait and see how he handles slightly easier conditions.”
James Doyle shares a word with Toormore following the Lennox Stakes

Toormore stamps class on Lennox Stakes field
Report: Goodwood, Tuesday, Qatar Lennox Stakes (Group 2) 7f, 3yo+
TOORMORE made his first run in Godolphin blue a winning one, in part thanks to a canny ride from the front by new jockey James Doyle.

With question marks over who would make the pace, Doyle seized the initiative on the four-year-old Toormore, who was dropping in grade after placed efforts in the Lockinge Stakes and Queen Anne Stakes this season.
Doyle asked Toormore to stretch his rivals inside the final two furlongs and he responded generously to take the prize from Dutch Connection in second.
Finally back in the winner’s enclosure
Toormore secured champion two-year-old honours in 2013 with a win in the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood part of his unbeaten year, but he has been without a win since last year’s Craven Stakes at Newmarket.
With a victory under his belt, Toormore can go back to competing in the top races according to his trainer Richard Hannon.
“It’s lovely to see him win a race,” Hannon said. “It’s a big thing for these horses to get confidence and he can go to the Prix Jacques Le Marios with a great chance. I think that race makes us think he needs to go back to a mile.
“Some might say he got an easy lead but I think he’s done it the hard way in a solid race. He’s got such a lovely attitude and they came at him one by one and he’s proved his mettle.”

Godolphin not feeling blue with new purchase
Victory provided an instant return for Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin, who prised Toormore away from previous owners Middleham Park Racing and James Pak after holding an interest in the colt for a prolonged period.
With Night Of Thunder also racing for Godolphin and trainer Richard Hannon, Toormore may be given the chance to chase big prizes overseas.
“I don’t think we’ve had him in better nick for a long time,” Hannon added. “There’s lots of options for him abroad, I think he’s got all sorts of invites everywhere.”
Trip conundrum for Connection
Having landed the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot over 7f, Dutch Connection seemed unable to go quick enough to keep up with Toormore.
Under pressure with over three furlongs to go, Dutch Connection kept on well to be second without threatening the winner. His trainer Charlie Hills may be considering a return to a mile with his three-year-old.
He said: “He’s run a cracker and we might think about the Breeders’ Cup Mile. We’ll just have to keep an eye on the ground in between.”

Gold for Dettori as Galileo takes Vintage
Report: Goodwood, Tuesday, Qatar Vintage Stakes (Group 2) 7f, 2yo
GALILEO GOLD provided an instant return for new owner Sheikh Joaan Al Thani with a determined victory under jockey Frankie Dettori.

In a falsely-run race, Galileo Goldwas well positioned when leader Welford drifted left in the straight, leaving a gap for Dettori to shoot through on the rail alongside Ibn Malik.
With challengers spread wide across the course the race was far from settled when Galileo Gold hit the front inside the final furling, but he stuck his neck out well to take the prize by three quarters of a length.
Dettori said: “It was an eventful race and I got the splits at the right time, but he dug deep and he won well. He showed a good attitude and I was very impressed.”
Palmer notches another major success
Galileo Gold’s win was another memorable one for trainer Hugo Palmer, who has enjoyed a magnificent time of things lately.
Covert Love provided Palmer with a first Classic when she landed the Irish Oaks, while the likes of Home Of The Brave and New Providence have also won Group races for the trainer.
However, Palmer was not on hand at Goodwood to watch his first runner for Al Shaqab win, instead he viewed the action from Turkey, where he is on honeymoon.

Sponsor strikes with first runner
Glorious Goodwood has been rebranded as the Qatar Goodwood festival this year after a significant sponsorship deal was signed with Sheikh Joaan, and the owner was able to celebrate a first winner at the meeting this year with his first runner.
His racing manager Harry Herbert said: “Sheikh Joaan has just arrived to see the race and as he’s sponsoring this year it’s a dream start.
“I’m also thrilled for Hugo who isn’t here as he’s on his honeymoon but I’ve just spoken to him watching from the beach in Turkey.”
No luck for Birchwood and co
The good luck enjoyed by Galileo Gold contrasted with the bad fortune suffered by some of his rivals, no more so than favourite Birchwood.
Travelling strongly under jockey William Buick, the Superlative Stakes winner went to challenge up the inside between Ibn Malik and Galileo Gold but had the door slammed firmly in his face forcing Buick to snatch his mount up and switch to the centre of the track.
He was still not beaten far in fifth with Ibn Malik hanging on for second from Palawan, who was bumped at the start and drifted all the way to the near rail in the home straight, and Twin Sails, who stumbled at the start before running on for fourth.
A Classic contender?
Mister Baileys was the last horse to win the Vintage Stakes and follow up in the 2,000 Guineas the following season.
Galileo Gold was given quotes of 33-1 for the Qipco 2,000 Guineas by both Betfred and Paddy Power after his win.
