Royal Ascot Day1. Primo giorno e prime emozioni. Innanzitutto iniziamo con il dire che Her Majesty era vestita di un rosso acceso. Non una semplice nota di colore dato che i bookmakers d’oltremanica aprono il gioco anche sul colore del vestito di Sua Maestà. Mica male.
 
Pronti via e subito un favorito a segno. E che favorito. Nelle Queen Anne Stakes (Gruppo1 sui 1600metri) Solow (Singspiel) si conferma essere al momento l’anziano imbattibile sulla distanza del miglio.
 
Il pupillo di Freddy Head, bellissimo nel modello, ha seguito come un ombra il capofila Toormore (Arakan) che era andato davanti a imporre ritmo. Maxime Guyon, grintoso in sella al grigio dei Wertheimer, si prende lo spazio chiusogli da Night of Thunder (Dubawi) senza troppi complimenti e lancia il suo addosso al “povero” Toormore che altro non può fare se non prendersi la sverniciata di Solow che passa con superiorità netta. Bella davvero la prestazione del vincitore dell’Ispahan, dove aveva già dimostrato di che pasta era fatto. Ad Ascot ha dato conferma di essere un miler con i fiocchi. Medaglia d’argento per un’altro transalpino : Andrè Fabre piazza al secondo gradino del podio Esoterique (Danehill Dancer), la femmina del Barone Rothschild, rientrata nel Prix Du Muguet con un terzo posto e oggi lanciata con un ottima progressione all’esterno di tutti da Boudot nel vano tentativo di agganciare il volante Solow. Terzo la sorpresa Colmoore (16/1 come Esoterique)  Cougar Mountain (Fastnet Rock) che avvicina la femmina sul palo dopo lunga rincorsa ma si deve accontentare. Mai in corsa l’atteso invader in visita da Hong Kong Able Friend (Shamardal), eroe di Sha Thin, che ha fatto più o meno la fine del povero Animal Kingdom nel 2013; Joao Moreira si arrende a palo ancora lontano.
 
 
 
Nelle Coventry colpo Godolphin con il regolarissimo Buratino (Exceed And Excel). Sei corse in carriera, mai fuori dal marcatore. L’allievo di Mark Johnston si presentava al via in questo Gruppo2 per i 2 anni sui 1200 metri con una straripante vittoria per sei lunghezze in una Listed a Epsom, lasciando intedere di avere motore. William Buick lo sa e tiene il bel sauro ben coperto dietro ai primi; non muove un dito fino al momento di far vedere la luce al suo. Allungo poderoso e due lunghezze piazzate tra lui e l’inseguitore Air Force Blue (war Front) ,ennesimo due anni del master di Ballydoyle alla seconda corsa in carriera dopo il debutto vincente al Curragh, che non rendono in toto la dimensione della bella vittoria del sauro in giubba Godolphin.
 
 
L’ultimo gradino del podio se lo aggiudica Eltezam (Kodiac) con Lanfranco Dettori in cabina con un ottima corsa aggressiva al punto giusto per un cavallo a 12-1. Niente bis a seguire per Frankie dopo l’affermazione dell’anno passato con The Wow Signal.
 
 
Altro giro altro regalo nella giostra del Royal Ascot. Le King’s Stand, il Gruppo1 a 1000metri, sono una vera roulette e questa volta il numero che vince tutto è quello di Goldream (Oasis Dream). Un arrivo al cardiopalma con tre cavalli racchiusi in meno di una lunghezza. Distacchi : short head – neck. Poco altro da raccontare. Martin Harley ruba il tempo a tutti con questo sei anni  e “addomestica” il palo per primo. Di una corta testa avrà da rammaricarsi Joao Moreira con Medicean Man (Medicean) che chiude secondo. 20\1 per Goldream e 50\1 per Medicean Men. Terzo il favorito targato Hamdan Al Maktoum Muthmir(Invincible Spirit), vincitore del Gros-Chene a Chantilly dove incrociò proprio Medicean Man che allora chiuse ottavo. L’eterno Sole Power, detentore del titolo, chiude con un onorevolissimo quinto; forse non proprio montanto al meglio da Richard Hughes che con il coriaceo otto anni da Kyllachy fa praticamente il giro del globo per poi fiondarsi a centro pista. Troppo tardi.
 
 
 
Ma c’era un cavallo in realtà che tutti attendevano oltre a Solow. Il vincitore delle 2000 Ghinee del Curragh era chiamato a confermarsi. Accontentati. Gleneagles (Galileo) spazia a piacimento nelle St. Jame’s  Palace Gruppo1 per i tre anni sul miglio. Ryan Moore non ha nemmeno bisogno di far vedere la frusta al suo, solo a spinta. Il pupillo di Padre Aidan mette la quinta e senza troppo sforzo si sbarazza della compagnia. Dimostrazione di forza. Per la cronaca secondo chiude il Godolphin Latharnach (Iffraaj) a due lunghezze e mezzo (potevano essere almeno il doppio) e terzo Consort (Lope De Vega), Lanfranco per Sir Micheal Stoute. Il resto è noia.

Il primo a dover rinunciare forzatamente all’impegno del Royal Ascot, è California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) il quale causa di un ascesso non potrà correre le Prince of Wales’s Stakes. Dunque rimandato il debutto europeo dell’americano. Anche se c’è da dire una cosa, finora le cronache sui lavori del cavallo non erano entusiasmanti e questa decisione va anche letta in controluce onde evitare brutte figure da parte di un cavallo che ha fatto sognare gli americani lo scorso anno. Sta di fatto che i bollettini medici parlano di contrattempo, e dunque ne prendiamo atto sperando si riprenda presto.

St James’s Palace Stakes (Group 1) 1m, 3yo colts

GLENEAGLES is in danger of getting a fan club after he did it yet again, winning his third Group 1 race of the season with a convincing burst of acceleration to put the St James’s Palace to bed at the furlong pole.

Certainly the punters who piled into the dual Classic winner were never worried, with one racegoer collecting £80,000 from his £150,000 punt on the 8-15 winning favourite.

Victory for Gleneagles ensured yet another racing record for winning trainer Aidan O’Brien. This was win number seven in the St James’s Place Stakes for Ireland’s champion trainer, overtaking the record he shared with Mathew Dawson who trained during the 19th century.

The trainer thinks his latest victor could be the best ever, as he said: “I am delighted. He is a horse who takes everything in his stride. For me is very like Giant’s Causeway but he has more speed than Giant’s Causeway. This horse will relax and quicken and that is what makes him a little bit different. I don’t think we have ever had a miler as good as him.”

The clash of the Classic colts failed to play out as France’s 2,000 Guineas winner Make Believe could not match the turn of foot employed by Gleneagles. Godolphin’s 25-1 shot Latharnach was left to chase home the winner.

Michael Tabor, one of the winning owners, ranked Gleneagles as “a very special horse”.

“He has done everything we hoped he would,” said Tabor, who commented on the decision to bypass the Investec Derby after wins in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket and Irish equivalent at the Curragh.

“There was talk but as far as we were concerned it was never a possibility. We’ll discuss what we are going to do next but there are so many options and it is exciting to have a horse of this calibre.”

Winning rider Ryan Moore said: “He’s got a very good turn of foot. It was a muddling race and messy early on. Frankie [Dettori] had [on Consort] his own way up front.

“He’s a pleasure to ride and getting better. I never really got serious with him, just hands and heels.”

For connections of Consort, the decision to jump from Listed class to Group 1 was vindicated, and Harry Herbert of owners Highclere Thoroughbreds, said: “It’s tough to make all and I thought for a moment he might win but he tired close home and it was a bit frustrating he wasn’t second. But that was very encouraging.”

Second spot opens up a new landscape for Latharnach, whose trainer Charlie Appleby said: “When you are finishing second behind a horse who has won two Guineas you would be confident to take our chance in a Group 1 again.”

The Qatar Sussex Stakes could provide an epic showdown between Gleneagles and Queen Anne winner Solow, with Paddy Power making Gleneagles the evens favourite and Solow a 6-4 chance.
