Bay hits new heights to land Prix du Jockey Club

Prix du Jockey Club (Group 1) 3yo colts and fillies 1m2 1/2f

FRANCE’S champion jump jockey Vincent Cheminaud added a Derby to his CV after flying home on the Andre Fabre-trained New Bay.

Second to last turning in, New Bay took up the running with half a furlong to go and stayed on gamely to hold off Highland Reel withWar Dispatch in third.

Enjoying a fourth win in the race, Fabre opted to take the same route with the son of Dubawi as he had with previous Derby winners Lope De Vega and Intello, running in the French 2,000 Guineas before stepping up in trip in this contest.

Like Lope De Vega, who won the Derby from stall 20, New Bay had to overcome a potentially troublesome draw, racing from stall 13 of 14.

The Pricewise pick of Tom Segal at 9-2 was settled in by Cheminaud and when the pace began to quicken inside the final two furlongs he was able to show an impressive turn of foot to sweep past his rivals and win by one and half lengths.

Cheminaud was crowned champion in 2014, the highlight coming when winning the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris on Storm Of Saintly for Guillaume Macaire. The 21-year-old will revert back to jumps on Monday with two rides at Auteuil.

After the race owner Khalid Abdullah’s racing manager, Teddy Grimthorpe said: “Again he has shown that really good turn of foot which would encourage us to think he might stay a mile and a half as well.

“He is still an inexperienced horse and he has proved today he is a class above. We will have to see but the Arc will have to come into the equation, which is nice.”

Second placed Highland Reel put in a massively improved performance after finishing a disappointing sixth in the French Guineas when sent off the short priced favourite.

His trainer Aidan O’Brien said: “We were delighted with Highland Reel. When Ryan (Moore) rode him in the French Guineas he just thought he was very rusty. He could be an Irish Derby or an Eclipse horse.”

Following the win Betfred responded by slashing his odds to 8-1 (from 20) for the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

IMPASSABLE proved too good for her rivals after coming from last to first, given an inspired ride by Maxime Guyon.

The daughter of Invincible Spirit had to overcome a tenacious La Berma who led for most of the mile contest and looked to be going the best when turning in.

But when Guyon began to wind the Carlos Laffon-Parias-trained filly up she was able to come on terms with the long-time leader and fly past her in the final furlong to land the spoils by three quarters of a length.

THE resilient Manatee managed to get his head back in front as he came with a well-timed run down the centre of the track under Mickael Barzalona.

Godolphin’s four-year-old was completing a double on the card for Fabre whose Mexican Gold was well beaten in the Prix de Sandringham.

New Bay

New Bay et Vincent Cheminaud

New Bay et Vincent Cheminaud
