MARTEDÌ 30 DICEMBRE 2014. Shared Belief vince le Malibu Stakes! Prevista rivincita con Bayern e California Chrome nelle San Antonio il 7 Febbraio

Ora parliamo un pò di America. Qualche giorno fa a Santa Anita si sono corse le Malibu Stakes G1 sui 1400 metri sul dirt per cavalli di 3 anni e, di fronte ad una folla di 40,810 persone nell’opening day di Santa Anita, il campione Shared Belief (Candy Ride), allenato da Jerry Hollendorfer con in sella Mike Smith, ha concluso la sua stagione dei 3 anni vincendo la sua ottava corsa in carriera in 9 uscite installando ulteriori dubbi su chi dovrà decidere e scegliere il cavallo dell’anno alle Eclipse Awards del prossimo mese.

Shared Belief ha vinto di incollatura ma battagliando e rendendo 5 libbre, battendo Conquest Two Step (Two Step Salsa) in 1m20.69s. IL VIDEO DELLE MALIBU STAKES QUI. L’unica sconfitta in carriera Shared l’ha subita nella controversa edizione della Breeders’ Cup Classic G1 del 2014 dove, da favorito, è stato messo in mezzo in senso metaforico e non solo da Bayern (Offlee Wild) che vinse ma sbandando in partenza facendo perdere molte chance proprio all’apertura delle gabbie, in una corsa dove poi al secondo fu Toast Of New York (Thewayyouare) e California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) al terzo e Shared appunto quarto, perdendo secondo molti tutta la sua chance in quel momento.

Ma la carriera di Shared, sebbene buonissima, è fatta di appuntamenti mancati. Come quello della intera partecipazione della Triple Crown sia per una presunta convinzione non faccia eccessiva distanza, ma in generale perchè ha subito un infortunio ad un piede che ne ha frenato la preparazione saltando completamente Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes e Belmont Stakes.

Prossimo obiettivo, o meglio corsa delle corse, è la rivincita nelle San Antonio Stakes G2 di Santa Anita del 7 Febbraio con $500,000 al palo ma molto di più in palio, come il rinnovato duello contro California Chrome, attualmente contender proprio del titolo Horse Of The Year in virtù anche dell’affermazione del saurone in erba nell’Hollywood Derby G1 a Del Mar, e Bayern con il quale ha appunto un conto più che aperto. Un corsone, o la rivincita delle rivincite! E tu, ti sei schierato?

MARTEDÌ 30 DICEMBRE 2014. Giappone: Hokko Tarumae re del dirt! Vince ancora il Tokyo Daishoten, caccia al record. Obiettivo Dubai World Cup

Passione Giappone. In questo periodo, ma in ottica futura, parliamo di tutto quello che avviene ad alti livelli in un altro continente, lontano anni luce dal nostro.. non solo geograficamente. Nella giornata di lunedì ad Ohi si è disputato il Tokyo Daishoten G1, una delle massime corse per specialisti del dirt nel circuito NRA, parallelo a quello in erba del JRA. Il top dirt horse al momento si chiama Hokko Tarumae (King Kamehameha), è allenato da Katsuichi Nishiura e quasi sempre montato da Hideaki Miyuki, che lo ha interpretato nel migliore dei modi anche ieri. Hokko, praticamente 6 anni, ha battuto Copano Rickey (Gold Allure) di 4 lunghezze e mezzo surclassando quello che il 3 Novembre a Morioka lo aveva battuto in uno dei tanti G1 in sabbia sui 2000 metri, ma quel giorno con attenuanti del terreno “muddy”, praticamente fangoso. Tra gli altri c’era anche l’americano Soi Phet (Tizbud) con Kent Desormeaux, il primo americano in assoluto a partecipare a questa corsa molto “jappa”, ma non è riuscito ad emergere ed i report indicano una emorragia fatta in corsa. Con questa vittoria Hokko ha raggiunto quota 7 G1 vinti in carriera, per voce del suo jockey l’obiettivo naturale è quello di centrare il record dei circuiti NRA e JRA di 9 G1 e c’è modo possa accadere, anche se nei circuiti NRA in generale i G1 sono considerati praticamente Listed a livello internazionale perchè non aperto a stranieri, mentre il Tokyo Daishoten è l’unica corsa del circuito aperto a stranieri ed è dotato di 119 milioni di yen, circa €600,000 . Comunque, Hokko è un cavallo che va forte e lo testimoniano le affermazioni nelle maggiori corse in dirt. Recentemente ha riportato la Champions Cup G1 (ex Japan Cup Dirt) di Chukyo il 7 Dicembre scorso, poi il Tokyo Daishoten dello scorso anno, il JBC Classic, il Teio Sho ed il Kashiwa Kinen ed il Kawasaki Kinen con uno score generale di 27 corse disputate, 14 vittorie, ed 8 piazzamenti in carriera per l’equivalente di circa €4,5 milioni vinti. Prossimo obiettivo a lungo termine la Dubai World Cup G1 già tentata senza esito lo scorso anno quando era finito ultimo lontano, ma sul Tapeta, da African Story (Pivotal) ma con dei problemi fisici riscontrati successivamente, mentre quest’anno si correrà sull’amato dirt. Ed il percorso sarà quello del Kawasaki Kinen G1 già vinto lo scorso anno e quest’anno di scena il 28 Gennaio, e per rifinire la condizione in ottica World Cup G1 correrà forse le February Stakes G1 di Tokyo il 22 Febbraio prossimo.

Belle Gallantey Among Nine in Affectionately

Two-time grade I winner Belle Gallantey, ninth in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff (gr. I) in her last start Oct. 31, is one of nine fillies and mares entered in the $100,000 Affectionately Stakes atAqueduct Racetrack Jan. 1.

The Affectionately, at 1 1/16 miles on the inner track, is the third race with a probable post time of 1:20 p.m. EST.

Belle Gallantey, owned by Michael Dubb and Bethlehem Stables, won five of eight starts in 2014 after her current owners and trainer Rudy Rodriguez claimed her for $35,000 at Aqueduct in her final start of 2013. Her two stakes victories in 2014 came in the Delaware Handicap (gr. I) in July and the Beldame Invitational (gr. I) in September.

Belle Gallantey, a 6-year-old mare by After Market, has been first, second, or third in 28 of 44 starts and has earned $1,111,270. She will be ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr. as the 123-pound highweight from post 9.

Bobby Flay’s America, a regular competitor in graded stakes in 2014, drew post 6 under Junior Alvarado at 118 pounds. The A.P. Indy filly enters the Affectionately off back-to-back victories in allowance company in November and December at Aqueduct.

Trained by Bill Mott, America competed in six graded stakes in 2014 with her best finishes a third in the Mother Goose Stakes (gr. I) behind eventual Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Untapable and a third in the Gulfstream Park Oaks (gr. II) behind In Tune.

Sterling City aims to retain title in HKG3 Chinese Club Challenge Cup

Sterling City will attempt to kick-start his season on the first day of 2015 when he is set to take on nine smart rivals at Sha Tin in an intriguing renewal of the HKG3 Chinese Club Challenge Cup (Handicap).

The New Year’s Day feature often attracts top-class contenders and the roll of recent winners includes G1-calibre heroes such as Little Bridge (2011), Egyptian Ra (2010), Joy And Fun (2009), Floral Pegasus (2007) and Scintillation (2006).

And Sterling City can be included in that list, too. John Moore’s charge won the 2014 edition en route to a famous top-flight triumph but, unlike 12 months ago, this time around the gelding heads into the 1400m contest off the back of an uninspiring run of form. Sterling City has failed to make the frame in five starts since winning the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen (1200m – Tapeta) at Meydan in March, and was last seen finishing a disappointing 10th behind Aerovelocity in the G1 LONGINES Hong Kong Sprint (1200m).

Sterling City had shown some of his old spark in his final piece of work before his most recent failure and he appeared in fine heart once again when working under Umberto Rispoli at Sha Tin this morning (Tuesday, 30 December). The new partnership went 800m on the all-weather track in 50.2s (28.0s, 22.2s) in company with Frederick Engels. Rispoli will pilot the two-time course and distance winner on Thursday as regular pilot Joao Moreira serves a suspension.

“His work was good this morning and he looks fit,” said Rispoli. “If Sterling City comes back to his best form of last season he has a very good chance, and I think the 1400m is probably best for him.”

Sterling City has dropped a point in the ratings to 121 since his last start but that is still 3lb higher than his winning mark last year and he faces no easy task under top-weight of 133lb. Among his talented opponents are trainer Dennis Yip’s last start winner All You Wish (120lb), the Tony Cruz-trained Beauty Flame (122lb), six-time course and distance winner Super Lifeline (118lb) from the Tony Millard stable, and the John Size-trained pair of Tour De Force (121lb) and Wonderful Moments (113lb).

The G1 winner must also cross swords with four of his stablemates as Moore will pitch into the fray Flagship Shine (128lb), Rewarding Hero (122lb), Secret Sham (122lb) and Frederick Engels (126lb). The last-named has eased from a peak rating of 119 to 114, his lowest mark in almost two years, and showed his wellbeing last time out when a running-on fourth in a 1200m Class 1 at Happy Valley on 17 December.

Frederick Engels accompanied Sterling City in his work this morning and the soon-to-be six-year-old, third in the 2013 LONGINES Hong Kong Sprint, was sending positive vibes to big-race rider Karis Teetan.

“Frederick Engels was doing it all very nicely this morning. He worked with Sterling City and he led the gallop but he worked very well. He felt good and stretched nicely to the line,” said Teetan.

“This is the first time I’ll ride him in a race but I’ve been watching his replays and his last run was promising. If he can settle like that and give me the same feel as this morning, I think he can have a good chance. He’s fit and well and maybe he’s finding a bit of form now – feeling good inside – it felt that way this morning.”

All You Wish, third in this race in 2014 and 2lb worse off with Sterling City on that running for a length and a quarter, returned to winning ways in a mile Class 1 at Sha Tin on 30 November. The 2012/2013 Champion Griffin, a four-time course and distance winner, now finds himself on a career-high mark but could have more to offer with only 13 lifetime starts under his belt.

Meanwhile, Flagship Shine and Secret Sham, also-rans in G1 company at the LONGINES HKIR last time, will be looking to find their feet again in this lesser grade.

Thursday’s action commences at 12.30pm with the Yi Tung Shan Handicap over 1800m. The Chinese Club Challenge Cup (Handicap) is race nine on the card and is due off at 4.35pm.
