JOHNSTON 1, 3 & 4

Johnston stars as meeting gets underway

Mark Johnston’s prodigious success at Glorious Goodwood was underlined when he saddled the first, third and fourth in the opening Bet365.com Handicap.

Sennockian Star, a four-year-old ridden by Joe Fanning, led the Johnston procession, with only the Luca Cumani-trained Ajman Bridge spoiling a clean sweep by taking second. Salutation (Michael Murphy) was third and Busatto (Royston Ffrench) finished fourth. This was the trainer’s 99th winner at Goodwood and 60th at the Glorious meeting, while Fanning has achieved scores of 28 and 12 respectively.

Scotland-born and Yorkshire-based, Johnston said: “All three of our jockeys rode fine races. That was Busatto’s best run for a while in the most competitive race he’s been in for a while – Royston rode a great race in front and kicked clear at just the right moment meaning it was going to take good ones to get past him. First Salutation did, then I thought we were going to be out of it [when Ajman Bridge threatened] but thankfully Sennockian Star appeared.

“Before the race I said everyone’s talking about Salutation, but it really has to be Sennockian Star because conditions are spot on for him and it’s rare for him to run a bad race. He’s run poorly at Epsom and Redcar this season but each time he failed to get a good start – he seems to sulk if he gets in behind, but I knew if he was thereabouts at the start he would be there at the finish.

“Salutation was drawn badly, so I told Michael if you don’t get to the front get across before the bend. We weren’t sure if Royston [on Busatto] had the pace to be up there, but he did and led them.

“Joe felt that off a mark of 102 he [Sennockian Star] would struggle, but that as soon as the race started he knew the horse was on a going day and was in great form. It was ideal that something gave him a lead. He wears blinkers and likes something to aim at.”

Fanning added: “They went a nice gallop up front, which suits this lad – I think that he is better getting a lead. Inside the final furlong, I thought that I would always get there.

“I actually thought that he was at least 5lb or 6lb too high in the handicap, but I was proved wrong, so it was good.

“It’s always nice to get one on the board. I have got good rides this week so it’s nice to kick start with a winner.

“The ground is on the quick side, definitely – good, fast ground. I think it was riding quick.”

  • 1st - 5 Sennockian Star 14/1
  • 2nd - 18 Ajman Bridge 8/1
  • 3rd - 16 Salutation 8/1
  • 4th - Busatto 25/1

OPERATION ADJOURNED FOR AJMAN

A mooted gelding operation on Ajman Bridge has been adjourned after the four-year-old put in a good effort to come second in the opening bet365.com Handicap.

“That was a good run and slowly we have figured out the key to this horse,” said Matt Cumani, assistant to his father Luca. “William (Buick) added further to our thoughts and the thing we’ve found out is that he likes his own space in a race. It’s the same at home where he fights other horses.

“We had been thinking of gelding him but he’s put in two good runs now so I think he’s safe until at least the end of the year! He’s a good fun horse and he’ll keep going in these good handicaps.”
