De Sousa excels as Cavalryman hangs on

SILVESTRE DE SOUSA gave his employers a reminder of his talents with a perfectly-judged ride on Cavalryman as the Godolphin-owned eight-year-old kept Hillstar at bay in a tight finish.

De Sousa, who has fallen below Kieren Fallon in the jockey hierarchy for Saeed Bin Suroor’s powerful string in recent months, grabbed the inside rail on the 9-1 chance and hit the line a neck in front of the runner-up, with Pether’s Moon a further half-length away in third.
The jockey revealed after the race he had to think on his feet as none of his rivals wanted to set the pace.
“It wasn’t the plan but I had no choice, we had to make it,” he said.
“He stays two miles so I was happy with my position. He was very tough and very genuine.”
Favourite Arab Spring, positioned on the coat-tails of Cavalryman in the early stages, was found wanting as the pace quickened and trailed home in fourth.
Cavalryman has been a fixture in the major Flat races, including the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and Melbourne Cup, throughout the years and on his last start was unfortunate not to register successive victories in the Dubai Gold Cup.
He went down by a neck to Certerach at Meydan, where he won a Group 3 on his preceding outing, and he again showed the fire still burns brightly to take his Group-race tally to five.
Cavalryman, whose sole victory at the highest level came five years ago in the Grand Prix de Paris, recorded a winning time over ten seconds slower than RP Standard on ground which was subsequently changed to good (from good to firm, good in places).
Bin Suroor, whose apparent first string Excellent Result was well beaten under Fallon, said of the winner: “He always runs well fresh, as he showed in Dubai, and although he was a little bit keen, Silvestre didn’t fight with him and he finished the race well.
“We’ll now take him to the Goodwood Cup and will keep options open for going back for another try at the Melbourne Cup.”

BEFORE racing the two Richards – trainer Hannon and rider Hughes – talked up their impressive Sandown maiden winnerIvawood so much that, despite stepping into Group company against more experienced rivals, he was sent off the 3-1 favourite.

He did not disappoint. Powering to a two and three-quarter length win from 13-2 shot Jungle Cat, he left a field pulling together most of the best juvenile form from Royal Ascot trailing in his wake.
It was a performance so impressive it tempted his trainer into going even further: “He’s probably the most exciting two-year-old we have,” he said.
For a yard that specialises in two-year-olds that is some statement, one almost as bold as the statement made by the horse himself. By blitzing a largely more experienced field he earned quotes ranging from 16-1 to 20-1 for next year’s Qipco 2,000 Guineas.
“Physically he’s pretty close to Toronado, which is a nice comparison,” added Hannon. “He’ll probably go Middle Park or Gimcrack from here. He’s probably as good a two-year-old anyone’s seen so far. He’ll get further and looks a Guineas horse all over.”
Muhaarar was third at 12-1, a further half-length adrift.

Winner of the Listed Queen’s Vase over three furlongs further, the Mark Johnston-trained 9-4 shot was allowed an uncontested lead throughout and powered home by two and three-quarter lengths from Windshear, who was sent off the 2-1 joint-favourite with third-placed Forever Now.
Having run Hartnell in two Derby trials, Johnston clearly saw Classic potential in the winner and said: “He failed to live up to expectation in his first couple of runs but that’s him coming good now.
“The St Leger has got to be the target, though the ground may be an issue as he likes a little bit of cut. What we do between now and then we’ll have to go home and decide.”
Sponsors Ladbrokes make Hartnell an 8-1 chance for Doncaster, although Paddy Power go 11-1.
Jockey Joe Fanning, who got his fractions spot-on, said: “He won well today, kept straight and two out I thought it would take a good one to get by me.
“He gave me a better feel than at Ascot and liked a bit more juice in the ground.”
Persistent rain totalling 4mm fell in the build-up to the race, which triggered a going change to good to firm, good in places, and the winning was 6.29 seconds slower than RP Standard.
The opening race of the three-day July festival was delayed after Odeon unshipped Graham Lee and got loose going to the start.
The James Given-trained colt was eventually caught and withdrawn, triggering a rule 4 of 5p to the pound.
