Amburgo: Idee 145 Deutsches Derby (Group 1) (3yo colts & fillies) (Turf) – €650,000 – 2400 metri: Avrebbe vinto anche se sopra avesse avuto un freno a mano tirato, e nonostante la gufata di Andreas Helfenbein, il fantino attempato rimpiazzato dal vivace belga Soumillon. Ad Amburgo Sea The Moon (Sea The Stars) ha egemonizzato il 145° Deutsches Derby G1 dominandolo dall’inizio alla fine, lasciando ad 11 lunghezze di distacco il secondo, venendo allo steccato opposto senza mai lasciarsi avvicinare da nessuno. Cristhophe Soumillon ha dato fondo a tutta la sua esperienza internazionale facendo galoppare liberamente “STM” senza disturbare troppo la sua psiche già abbastanza nevrile in questa fase della carriera, ha portato a spasso l’allegra compagnia lungo tutto l’arco della corsa fino all’ultima curva quando, considerando che all’interno il tracciato di Amburgo era un campo di patate, ha assecondato il suo verso lo steccato sotto le tribune facendo perdere la bussola anche alle telecamere per un attimo disorientate. Quando hanno allargato l’inquadratura si è notato come Soumillon abbia cominciato a montarlo, ma le lunghezze di vantaggio erano già parecchie ed allora il top jockey belga ha pensato bene di mettere giù e dare il via alle celebrazioni, senza batter ciglio. Pare che Australia (Galileo) abbia fatto cadere la birra sobbalzando sul divano! A parte gli scherzi, il campione del Coolmore dovrà cominciare a preoccuparsi, un rivale l’ha trovato e non vediamo l’ora si incontrino.
Ad una marea di distanza c’è stato l’affondo di Lucky Lion (High Chaparral) arrivato secondo con Open Your Heart (Samum) finito miracolosamente terzo, montato da Mirco Demuro che gli ha costruito un percorso perfetto all’interno dopo aver dato l’impressione di non seguire affatto l’andatura. Notare prima della curva dove si trova il cavallo sfacciato… Anche questo è un colpo di genio su un cavallo che era a 66/1.
Il favorito invece era Sea The Moon e questo ha vinto senza tanti tormenti regalando a suo padre Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) un’altra Classica dopo quella di Taghrooda nelle Oaks G1 di Epsom. Ininfluenti i supplementati per €65,000 + iva (il 7%): Il Godolphin Pinzolo (Monsun) è giunto 15° e peggio ancoraGeoffrey Chaucer (Montjeu) per il Coolmore, arrivato penultimo a 28 lunghezze dal terzultimo. NB: Chartbreaker, il cavallo che doveva montare Cristian Demuro è stato ritirato prima della corsa.
Il vincitore è un portacolori del Gestüt Görlsdorf allenato da Markus Klug, ora imbattuto in 4 uscite e sempre in maniera più convincente. Ad inizio settimana c’era stata la discussa sostituzione dell’abituale fantino Andrea Helfenbein, rimpiazzato a causa di una caduta di qualche giorno fa dalla quale sembrava non aver recuperato. Helfenbein invece ha anche vinto, ma per i proprietari era troppo delicata una situazione del genere per non optare per un Soumillon libero, capace di domare anche i leoni, figuriamoci gestire un carattere bisbetico come quello di Sea. Il tempo finale è stato di 2m 29.86s, ma se avesse voluto avrebbe potuto anche fare il record della corsa. I bookmakers hanno reagito ponendo STM ad una media di 8/1 per il Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe G1, dal 20/1 di prima della corsa.
In giornata ad Amburgo soddisfazione italiana comunque: Sia Mirco che Cristian Demuro si sono ritagliati il loro spazio vincendone una a testa: Ha cominciato fratel Cristian in sella alla femmina Lilydale (It’s Gino) nel Preis der Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH sui 1600 metri per Roland Dzubasz e per lo stesso allenatore ha replicato subito dopo fratellone Mirco nel BBAG Meiler Auktionsrennen – Corsa riservata a soggetti venduti all’asta da €52,000 su New World (Doyen) a 7/1

SEA THE MOON put up a display to make Australia’s connections sit up and take notice with a stunning victory, winning by a huge margin on the bridle after a dramatic manoeuvre to race alone up the stands’ rail.
So superior was the son of Sea The Stars that Christophe Soumillon was easing up with a furlong to run.
Soumillon had set the pace on Sea The Moon but sprang a surprise on entering the straight by steering his mount off the far rail and right across to the stands. The cameras briefly lost sight of the pair but when they returned to view it was obvious they were well ahead.
A few moments later the 9-5 favourite was a street clear with Soumillon sitting up and enjoying the rare experience of winning a Classic without turning a hair.
The winning distance was 11 lengths, one more even than Shergar at Epsom in 1981, leaving winning trainer Markus Klug to say: “We were very confident, but I did not expect him to win like that!
None of his rivals had a prayer with Godolphin representative Pinzolo and Ballydoyle runner Geoffrey Chaucer never threatening. Lucky Lion took second place with Open Your Heart third.
Soumillon said: “I was going so well that I found myself in front very early and just decided to stay there. When they came round that last bend I went to look for better ground on the outside of the track. I knew then he was going to win.
“He’s a bit like Orfevre (two-times Arc runner-up) in the sense that he’s a bit cheeky and is not an easy horse to ride.”
Asked if Sea The Moon could be competitive in major races in France and England, Soumillon said: “Absolutely. Definitely. Yes.”
Bookmaker quotes emerged almost as rapidly as the winner. BetVictor went 8-1 (from 20) for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, a race for which Bolyesports offered 6-1 and Paddy Power 14-1.
Soumillon was riding the colt for the first time after owners Gestut Gorlsdorf opted to replace regular rider Andreas Helfenbein, who had been on board for the three previous runs but only recently returned from injury.
His actions in heading across the track had been worked out in advance, as Klug revealed.
The trainer added: “As the horse has a history of hanging, I told Christophe to let him go to the outside rail, if he felt that the horse was going that way and then ride a finish all by himself.”
Ryan Moore, rider of Geoffrey Chaucer, who finished second last, said: “He was struck into early on and came back with a bad cut; he was never going well after that.”
William Buick, rider of 15th-placed Pinzolo, said: “I had a good position early on but he was soon struggling and never really threatened to get into the race.”
