The Fugue wins the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot

THE FUGUE bids to become only the third ever filly or mare to win the Coral-Eclipse when she lines up against the boys at Sandown on Saturday.
The John Gosden-trained mare finished last in the race 12 months ago but comes into this year’s running off the back of a scintillating Prince of Wales’s Stakes victory at Royal Ascot, where she broke the track record.
Yet Gosden on Friday cautioned such a performance may have left a mark on the five-year-old, who was a best-priced 9-4 shot on Friday evening.
He said: “It’s only two and a half weeks since Ascot and when they go and break track records, even if it looks as if they’ve done it easily, it’s a big ask. I always feel these races are quite concertinaed, but we’re happy with her.”
Pebbles and Kooyonga are the only fillies to win the Eclipse since the race was first run in 1886.
Richard Hughes, who rides the 2,000 Guineas winner Night Of Thunder in the Group 1 race, highlighted the same factor as a reason why his colt could emerge triumphant.
“[The Fugue] broke the track record in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, which underlines the merit of her performance, but it also underlines that, however easily she appeared to win, she must have had a hard race,” he writes in his exclusive column in Saturday’s Racing Post.
“I’m always wary when a horse who has broken a track record runs next time out.
“They often fail to match the level set on their previous outing and that is especially the case when you are talking about fillies and mares.”

Kingston Hill: “He’ll see out the trip well”
PICTURE: Mark Cranham (racingpost.com/photos)
Dettori keen on Eclipse mover Kingston Hill
DERBY second Kingston Hill has plenty in his favour in today’s Coral-Eclipse, according to jockey Frankie Dettori, who is seeking his third win in Sandown’s prestigious Group 1.
Trained by Roger Varian for Paul Smith, Kingston Hill had been 11-2 for the Eclipse overnight, but is a general 4-1 this morning. Paddy Power and Coral offer 9-2.
His chances have seemingly been boosted by 3mm of overnight rain at Sandown – the ground remains good to firm, firm on the round course – and Dettori, who replaces the Haydock-bound Andrea Atzeni on the son of Mastercraftsman, said: “It was a super run in the Derby. He was the only horse to get Australia in trouble and was gaining back on him on the run in.
“The track will suit him, there’s been a bit of rain and he’s an improving horse.

“The three-year-olds also get so much weight from the older horses and a good three-year-old usually wins this like Sea The Stars. Kingston Hill is a grinder and will see out the trip well.”
Ante-post favourite The Fugue is the one to beat, added Dettori, whose Eclipse wins came on Daylami and Refuse To Bend in 1998 and 2004.
“She’s got a fantastic cruising gear and an impressive turn of foot – that’s why she’s favourite,” he said on The Morning Line.
Kingston Hill was well behind Night Of Thunder in the 2,000 Guineas, but Dettori doubts his chances after his second to Kingman in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.
“I think the mile and a quarter will stretch Night Of Thunder,” added the rider. “I don’t think he saw the race out at Ascot like a mile-and-a-quarter horse. He’s got a lot to prove today.”
