The Grey Gatsby surges home in Jockey Club
Report: France, Sunday
Chantilly: Prix du Jockey Club (Group 1) 1m2½f, 3yo
THE GREY GATSBY handed Kevin Ryan a first Classic victory and gave a big boost to the form of the Dante when bursting clear to win stylishly for Ryan Moore.
There had been some scepticism surrounding the form of the Dante after hot favourite True Story finished only third, but the distinctive grey colt proved his victory at York was no fluke as he stormed to victory in a race record time at Chantilly.

While Ryan Moore enjoyed a dream split when required on the inside, Gerald Mosse could not chart a clear passage on 2-1 favourite Prince Gibraltar, only managing third when finally getting into clear air.
Before the start, it looked like The Grey Gatsby might have already lost the race as he got worked up, but once out and running for Moore there were no problems as he was tucked away on the rail towards the rear.
Once the field fanned out in the straight, Moore got the gaps he wanted and shot through, going past runner-up Shamkiyr, who had travelled well into contention.
Out in front the result was never in doubt, as The Grey Gatsby ran strongly right to the line, claiming victory at 12-1 with Shamkiyr second at 13-2.
Winning trainer Ryan said: “At the start of the race there was no way that Ryan Moore was where he wanted to be. But after about three furlongs he managed to work his way into a position where he could ride a race.
“A lot of people knocked his win in the Dante, but he still does not have very much experience.
“He will probably have a little break and we might think about a race like the Juddmonte back at York. But having watched that win I we might think about stepping him up a bit further in trip.”

THE trio of British-trained runners finished outside the places as Rangali (Henri-Alex Pantall/Fabrice Veron) proved too quick for his elders.
The only three-year-old in the six-strong field, Rangali burst through with a decisive turn of foot, with odds-on favourite Catcall taking second.
Stepper Point (William Muir) and Justineo (Roger Varian) were the early pacesetters but faded late on and Lucky Beggar (Charlie Hills) was also unable to land a blow.
