Ihtimal cut for Guineas after Classic success
IHTIMAL was on Thursday night between 12-1 and 16-1 for Qipco 1,000 Guineas glory after a highly impressive winning reappearance in the UAE 1,000 Guineas at Meydan.
Godolphin’s filly was an across-the-board market mover for the Newmarket Classic on May 4 after becoming trainer Saeed Bin Suroor’s eighth winner of his local 1,000 Guineas.
Her trainer had given her top billing in a Dubai World Cup Carnival stable tour in the Racing Post, saying she is “a filly with a touch of class and very much part of our Classic aspirations”, and the daughter of Shamardal certainly lived up to that by slamming her ten rivals by upwards of three and a quarter lengths, in the process providing ante-post punters with a first Classic clue of the year.
The UAE Oaks is likely to be next on the agenda, with Classics in Britain sure to be at the forefront of connections’ thoughts after the taking victory.
“She is a classy filly,” said De Sousa. “She has done well since arriving in Dubai and I was always pretty confident as I was going so well. She quickened like a good filly – it was a very good performance.”
Miss France, Tapestry and Chriselliam – despite her setback – dispute favouritism for the 1,000 Guineas. Tapestry is clear market leader for the Investec Oaks with most firms, although Paddy Power chose to promote Ihtimal to favourite at 10-1. She remained a 20-1 chance with several firms for the Epsom Classic.
