Shuruq back to her best for Meydan win
Report: UAE, Thursday
Meydan: Al Maktoum Challenge Round 1 Presented By Longines (Group 2) 1m, Tapeta, 3yo+
A RETURN to Tapeta brought about a return in form for Shuruqas last season’s UAE Oaks winner bounced back to her best with a win in Round 1 of the Al Maktoum challenge.
The four-year-old failed to win in three starts in Britain last year, being well beaten in a Listed race at Yarmouth on her most recent start, but she left that form well behind on her return to Dubai.
Empire Storm, making his debut for Michael Attwater ran an absolute blinder to finish second, just holding on from the Ger Lyons-trained Brendan Brackan for that position.
Silvestre de Sousa was happy to keep his mount towards the rear and although the field did not go much of a gallop with Kieren Fallon finding himself up front alone on Empire State, Shuruq was still able to pick up in fine style racing down the Meydan straight, sweeping down the centre of the track to hit the front near the line.
“I was quite happy to sit behind the leaders,” said de Sousa. “She did it in good fashion and she loves the surface. I think she should improve for that run.”
Shuruq, trained by Saeed bin Suroor was returned an 11-2 chance with the British bookmakers who made Steeler, the fourth horse home the 3-1 favourite.
Steeler was one of 22 horses banned for racing last year as part of the drugs scandal which hit Godolphin and ran a creditable race on his first start for 439 days.
