Jwala: notched shock win in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes on Friday

JWALA caused an almighty upset in the Nunthorpe Stakes when powering home to take the Group 1 at odds of 40-1, with the well-backed favourite Shea Shea finishing half a length back in second.
The Robert Cowell-trained four-year-old finished last behind Moviesta in the King George at Goodwood last time out but Cowell reported she had fractured an eye socket that day.
“I’m absolutely thrilled,” said the trainer. “She is a grand filly who has come on leaps and bounds.
“She fractured her eye socket last time out and she’s come back in fine style.”
The daughter of Oasis Dream travelled superbly throughout as her stablemate Spirit Quartz set the early pace before the filly hit the front inside the final furlong.
Shea Shea and the strong-finishing Sole Power chased Jwala in the final stages of the race but made no real impression on the eventual winner with Shea Shea grabbing second by a nose from the Eddie Lynam-trained Sole Power.
Mike de Kock, trainer of the 3-1 favourite Shea Shea, said: “He has run well and he has held his form. There is never much between him and Sole Power.
“I think the rain made the difference, that’s what Frankie [Dettori] said, he said he was battling to get out of it and really quicken with the turn of foot he does have so maybe that just took the edge off him a bit. But it is not an excuse, he has run second and run well.
“He will probably go for the Abbaye and then have a bit of a break. The time frame is good and it is also a fast track but it can get soft.”
Sole Power, who edged out Shea Shea in the King’s Stand at Royal Ascot earlier this year, was up against it from the start according to his trainer.
“The ground beat him but we kind of knew beforehand it would,” said Lynam. “It has happened the last few times at York, we just haven’t had fast ground here for a few years. He ran well and I am proud of him.”
Jwala’s victory came as a relief to jockey Steve Drowne who had his licence withdrawn last year due to illness.
“I had to start again but luckily this filly came along for me,” said Drowne. “It was so frustrating because what I had should have only kept me out for a fortnight. Everyone knows the problems I had. I’m just glad I’m back.”
In a remarkable turn of events, Movie sta, who won the King George in which Jwala finished last at Glorious Goodwood last time out, finished dead last himself and his trainer admitted something wasn’t right.
Moviesta’s trainer, Bryan Smart, said: “He ran too bad to be true. It is one of those days, horses can run disappointingly and when it is too bad to be true you can put a line through it – he finished behind a lot of horses he has beaten before.”
Jwala’s shock Nunthorpe success is the third upset in four years with Margot Did taking the spoils at 20-1 in 2011 with Sole Power winning in 2010 at a massive 100-1.
