Better Lucky went down by half a length to Stephanie’s Kitten, the pair clear, after a sustained duel in the Grade One Longines Just A Game Stakes at Belmont Park, USA, on Saturday, June 8.
The Tom Albertrani-trained four-year-old filly broke well from the outside draw of the six runners in the mile contest on yielding turf.
Joel Rosario settled Better Lucky in fourth on the outside as Mizdirection took the field along before moving closer on the final bend.
The Godolphin filly ranged up widest of all turning into the straight and challenged Stephanie’s Kitten for the lead entering the straight.
Better Lucky went to the front briefly by the furlong-pole and fought hard as the winner edged ahead again. She finished three lengths to the good over the third Hungry Island, while Stephanie’s Kitten’s time was 1m 36.27s.
Tom Albertrani commented: “She did extremely well. The winner had a perfect trip up the inner but Better Lucky ran right to the line.
“It is very pleasing to see that she can handle different turf surfaces and we will now regroup and point her towards a Grade One at Saratoga.”
Joel Rosario added: “My horse ran a big race today. We got beat, but she ran good. It was very exciting; me and the other horse were head-to-head. I tried to beat Stephanie’s Kitten but she was too tough.”
