AIDAN O’BRIEN worked his magic for a ninth time in the Irish 2,000 Guineas as Dee Stakes winner Magician dropped back in trip to annihilate his nine opponents under Joseph O’Brien.
Having won the recognised Derby trial at Chester over a mile and a quarter on his previous start, connections of the winner will have been delighted to have seen eventual third Trading Leather, trained by Jim Bolger, tearing off in front.

The manic pace appeared to suit Magician, who was quickly into stride and travelling majestically in third, one place behind Ask Dad.
The likes of Van Der Neer and Fort Knox were settled much further back in the field and failed to get into the race as the action unfolded up-front.
Joseph O’Brien angled 10-3 chance Magician off the rail with over two furlongs to run and quickly ranged up to Treading Leather.
From that point there was only going to be one winner as Magician went clear of his rivals in spectacular fashion, recording a three and a half length verdict over stablemate Gale Force Ten, who stayed on strongly to snatch second from Trading Leather.
Much of the post-race chat regarded a potential tilt at next week’s Investec Derby for which Ladbrokes slashed his odds to 5-1 joint second-favourite from 14-1 and part-owner John Magnier did not rule out the possibility of running at Epsom in seven days time.
Magnier said: “He was impressive. This is an improving horse and being by Galileo he should stay further. We’ve done crazy things before so we could run him at Epsom.
“I’m saying it tongue-in-cheek but we could. We’ll savour the moment and not get carried away.”
Less enthusiastic about the Derby was O’Brien, who said: “I’d imagine it would come too soon after what he did today but we will see how the horse is and what the lads think – the lads will make the decision themselves. He is an exciting horse, he is not slow.
“He’s got plenty of options including the St James’s Palace Stakes.”

Winner of the race in 2010 and a former victor of the Nunthorpe and Golden Jubilee Stakes, Kingsgate Native returned the 14-1 winner, narrowly holding runner-upSwiss Spirit and three-year-old Reckless Abandon.
The runners split into two groups, with Ballista, Spirit Quartz,Reckless Abandon and Morawij opting to race towards the far rail, with the remainder of the field heading to the stands’ rail.
Tangerine Trees led the near side group but the advantage appeared to rest with the smaller, far side group as the contest started to heat up.
Reckless Abandon, making his first start against his elders, burst through to lead his quartet and the field with under two furlongs to run.
Realising Reckless Abandon held the advantage, Shane Kelly angled Kingsgate Native towards the leader and joined him on the far side, poking his head into an outright lead as the post loomed.
Following Kelly’s move was William Buick on the slow away Swiss Spirit, who looked a little unlucky as he made strong late progress to snatch second from Reckless Abandon. Sole Power, the 11-10 favourite, finished fourth.
Winning trainer Robert Cowell said: “He is a very talented horse but so quirky, although when he is right he is right.
“His preparation has been awesome. Last year it was a bit hit and miss but he still showed a flash of brilliance and he has been training like a bloody good horse. And he has shown it today, I am absolutely thrilled.
“It is brilliant to have him back. It could all go wrong next time but at the moment it is going well and let’s just keep our fingers crossed that it keeps going that way.”
Of the luckless runner-up, Buick said: “He was bumped at the start and that cost us the race.”
Clive Cox was delighted with the effort of Reckless Abandon on his seasonal reappearance. He said: “I am very pleased, that will have put him on his game completely. The Group 1 penalty made the difference.”
Paddy Power make the winner a 12-1 shot (from 25s) for the King’s Stand Stakes.
