GUINEAS day at Longchamp provides a pair of extremely tough examinations, with both the colts and fillies’ classics attracting large fields.
Hoping to avoid any potential traffic problems in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains will be Richard Hughes, who rides leading British-trained hope Olympic Glory, a Group 1 winner on Arc day last October when defeating What A Name in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere.
“Olympic Glory is our big hope but we haven’t been lucky with the draw and he’ll have to be on his A-game to defy the 12 stall,” stressed Richard Hannon. “However, this has been the plan since before the Greenham, where he looked to be a horse crying out for a step up to the mile, and the race did him good as his work has been sharper since.”
The Hannon team are also responsible for Havana Gold , while John Gosden seeks to annex the Poulains with Bright Strike, eleven years after winning the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches with Zenda.
Leading the home defence are trial winners Gengis and Style Vendome.
Gengis landed the Prix de Fontainebleau for maverick trainer Georges Doleuze (father of jockey Olivier) but has had his chances of success severely compromised by being drawn widest of all in stall 18.
Much better treated is Prix Djebel winner Style Vendome.
“I’m very happy with the draw [3] as we wanted something in the first eight,” suggested trainer Nicolas Clement. “He’s had a very good preparation, trouble free and, we’re very happy with him. Let’s hope for a regular race and a little bit of luck in running.”

Flotilla represents the only Group 1 winning form among the maximum field of 20, having scored at the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita last November.
Unusually for a French trainer Mikel Delzangles has opted to come here without a prep-run.
The two key trials historically have been the Prix de la Grotte as well as the previous season’s two-year-old championship, the Prix Marcel Boussac.
Both races are well represented, with the two pieces of form tied in by Topaze Blanche, who was a narrow runner-up in the Boussac last October before finishing third when pulling too hard last month in the Grotte.
“She hadn’t been over-worked before her first run and we’ve done what we needed to since so she should be better and we’re approaching the race with confidence,” reported Carlos Laffon Parias of his daughter of Zamindar.
