Pleasing results at Hong Kong International Sale (December)

The Hong Kong Jockey Club today (Saturday, 8 December) staged the 2012 Hong Kong International Sale (December), and the 17 lots to pass through the Sha Tin Racecourse parade ring sold for an aggregate of HK$43.7 million.With this sale being the first of two to be held during the 2012/13 Hong Kong racing season, prices were not as inflated as has been the case in recent editions, a fact that pleased The Club’s Executive Director of Racing, William A Nader.“Today was a break-even sale, which is a good thing – we’re not in this to make money on the sale,” he said. “As we’ve said many times in the past, the purpose of this sale is to be a service provision to our owners and members, to give them the opportunity to have options in bringing horses to Hong Kong and race. The Owners set the market and the fact that it was a buyer’s market is fine with us. We’re here to produce horses that will benefit racing in Hong Kong and hopefully some of these horses will go on to become successful racehorses and be good value for our Owners.

“We have another Hong Kong International Sale in March and that might have contributed to the fact that the prices were a little more reasonable today. When we get into our second sale and weigh it all up together, we’ll have a big picture view of how the two sales work within one season, but I think having two sales will be a positive step because it will give Owners more opportunities to find the horse they want to purchase and also keep the prices a little more realistic.”

Lot 14, a brown Encosta De Lago gelding, out of the G2-winning Danzero mare Sharp, realized the day’s top price at HK$5 million.

The Sale average came in at HK$2,570,588 while the median was HK$2.3 million.
