SUBJECT: RESULT OF THE 37TH QUEEN ELIZABETH II COMMEMORATIVE CUP (G1)

The Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup was established in 1976 to facilitate friendly relations between Japan and England, in commemoration of Her Excellency’s visit to Japan in 1975. The race initially started as a 2,400-meter race and the last leg of the “triple crown for three-year-old fillies”, but became a 2,200-meter race for
fillies and mares of three-year-old and up from 1996. This year, the JRA was granted permission to hold this race as a special “Diamond Jubilee” event in celebration of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty’s accession to the throne. Tigertail (FR, by Priolo) and Ana Marie (FR, by Anabaa) were the first two foreign contestants to run in
2003—four years after its designation as an international event in 1999—and finished third and eighth, respectively. Shalanaya (IRE, by Lomitas) finished fourth in 2009 before Edward Dunlop-trained Snow Fairy (IRE, by Intikhab) gave a stunning performance and marked an overwhelming four-length victory in 2010, making her the first foreign runner to win at the highest G1 level for fillies and mares. She repeated the feat again in the following year, but was unable to return to defend her title for the second time this year, as she was sidelined due to heat in her foreleg, which ruled her out of the Arc and for the remainder of the year. With Triple Crown filly Gentildonna (JPN, by Deep Impact) choosing to target the Japan Cup, and without any runners from overseas among the field this year, Verxina who had come off second to Gentildonna in all three races of the Triple Crown for fillies including the Shuka Sho (G1, 2,000m) was the top favorite, while older contenders included Whale Capture, winner of the 2012 Victoria Mile (G1, 1,600m), Fumino Imagine, who beat a strong field that included G1 male horses in the Sapporo Kinen (G2, 2,000m) in August, and Fuchu Himba Stakes (G2, 1,800m) champion Meine Isabel. The race record has not been broken since To the Victory (JPN, by Sunday Silence) covered the 2,200-meter
distance in 2:11.2 in 2001.
