INVESTEC DERBY winner Camelot was given a provisional official rating of 124 on Sunday, the same rating achieved bySea The Stars for his 2009 victory.
However, the rating is lower than Workforce’s in 2010 (128) and New Approach in 2008 (126). Pour Moi, last year’s French-trained winner, achieved a rating 1lb lower at 123.
BHA head of handicapping Phil Smith told ATR: “He’s very good, no question. We’ve given him a mark of 124 so far. At this stage of his development we see him as the same horse as Sea The Stars.
“What we want to see him do now is to run against older horses. That is the great barometer. Sea The Stars went on to beat the older horses and remained unbeaten through the year.
“At some point we hope Camelot is going to run against older horses. It gives you a much more solid idea where he ranks in world racing.”
Camelot achieved a rating of 119 as a two-year-old and 121 for his Qipco 2,000 Guineas win in April.
