‘What a star!’ – Frankie Dettori on the scoresheet as Lord North lands Dubai Turf for a third time

Lord North put up a mighty performance to land the Group 1 Dubai Turf for the third consecutive time and put Frankie Dettori amongst the winners on Dubai World Cup night. 

Riding at the prestigious meeting for the final time after revealing plans to retire later this year, Dettori eased his partner to the outside turning in and Lord North came home like a rocket to deny Danon Beluga in second, with Godolphin’s Nations Pride back in third.

An emphatic winner of the Turf back in 2021, Lord North had to share the spoils with Japanese ace Panthalassa last year after a troubled preparation but he looked close to his imperious best on this occasion, showing an explosive turn of foot to win with authority. 

“It’s amazing,” said Dettori. “To win three times, the team has done an amazing job. He’s a horse who can get sick quite easily, which is why he doesn’t run that often, but the boys get him ready for this race and full credit to everyone. They’ve done an amazing job and Lord North himself; what a star!”  

All eyes were on Dettori heading into World Cup night, a meeting at which the rider has enjoyed unparalleled success at during his illustrious career. A four-time winner of the World Cup, Dettori enjoyed great success in Dubai when number one rider for Godolphin and has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years when teaming up with John and Thady Gosden, joint-trainers of Lord North. 

“I came in with some decent rides and to just get one on the board at this beautiful place that has been my home for so many winters, really is special,” the rider told Racing TV.  

After a smooth victory in the Winter Derby at Lingfield last time and following a smooth preparation, confidence was apparently high in the Lord North camp and he did not disappoint.  

“Last year his preparation wasn’t quite as straightforward as it was this year and we were very happy with him coming into the race,” said Thady Gosden. “He showed a great turn of foot to get to the front. The strong pace helped him and he picked up like we know he can. It’s fantastic to come and win a race of this quality three years in a row.”
