Tuesday, April 19: Dermot McLoughlin springs another huge shock in the Irish Grand National, Constitution Hill is ruled out of Punchestown and an unmissable Aidan O’Brien stable tour. All this and more in today’s newsletter . . .

The big story

Last year: 150-1 winner. This year: 40-1 winner.

Dermot McLoughlin is earning a reputation for making the impossible, possible, and after Freewheelin Dylan stunned Fairyhouse in the Irish Grand National 12 months ago, the trainer repeated the trick with another outsider on Monday evening as Lord Lariat ran out an emphatic winner of the big one at his local track.

Celebrations were even more raucous this time around as the winning connections, including 7lb claiming jockey Paddy O’Hanlon and owner Pat Blake, were met with a rip-roaring reception by the crowd.

“It probably won’t sink in for a while, but I’m coming here from a young age with my father so it’s very special,” said McLoughlin. “The team at home work hard and to have my wife and kids here this time makes up for last year. We’ll enjoy it.”

Anyone for a hat-trick in 2023?

Irish Grand National reaction:

Constitution Hill v Honeysuckle? Not yet . . .

It’s the clash we all want to see – but we’re going to have to wait a little bit longer.

The prospect of the jumps season reaching a booming crescendo with a match-up between Honeysuckle and Constitution Hill at Punchestown was a tantalising one, but the ultra-impressive Supreme winner won’t be heading across the Irish Sea next week, it was revealed yesterday.

Instead, Constitution Hill will be off on his summer holidays, with owner Michael Buckley and trainer Nicky Henderson confirming the five-year-old is to stay hurdling next season.

“He’s not going to Ireland,” Buckley said. “The whole thing got slightly run away with. I said to Nick Luck on television in a slightly tongue-in-cheek way that it would be fun to take Honeysuckle on if we won really impressively in the Supreme, but I never said if we win impressively we’ll take her on.”

Henderson added: “It was a hard decision, but hopefully there’s time to meet Honeysuckle – we’ve just got to mind our one a bit for now.”

This would suggest a tilt at the 2023 Champion Hurdle is on the cards – and a showdown with racing royalty. Surely, it will be worth the wait.
