Holding Debutante S. resulted in a trifecta of Joseph-Donnacha-Aidan O’Brien as the oldest son of the Ballydoyle master held sway with ‘TDN Rising Star’ Pretty Gorgeous (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}). Runner-up to Donnacha’s Shale (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G3 Silver Flash S. over this seven-furlong trip on fast ground at Leopardstown Aug. 6, John Oxley’s 3-1 shot was always travelling easily in a share of fourth and when sent on by Shane Crosse brushed aside that rival to gain the lead with a furlong remaining. Hitting the line strong, she had 2 1/2 lengths to spare over the 7-4 favourite, with Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) the same margin behind doing the best of the Ballydoyle runners.

High Definition a New Rising Star At The Curragh

Aidan O’Brien had a duo engaged in Saturday’s Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden over a mile at The Curragh and enjoyed a one-two as the middle-distance types begin to emerge from the stable’s crop of juveniles. While the market favoured Wordsworth (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the full-brother to the G1 St Leger and G1 Grand Prix de Paris hero Kew Gardens (Ire) ultimately had to give best to the stable’s second-string High Definition (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who swooped late to score with authority at 7-1. Held up in rear early by Wayne Lordan, the son of the listed scorer and group 3-placed Palace (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) was looking for room two out still anchored at the back. Delivered with a surge to cut through the pack and make up three lengths on that 5-2 favourite, he was going away at the line where he held a 3/4-of-a-length margin over his stablemate, with Flying Visit (Ire) (Pride of Dubai {Aus}) a head away in third.
The winner is a full-brother to last year’s G2 Beresford S. winner and G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy runner-up Innisfree (Ire), GSW-Ire, G1SP-Eng, $141,701, who has yet to be seen this term but was front rank in the Derby picture during the winter. Lordan was impressed with the bay, who is a late-May foal. “He was a little raw early. Through the middle of the race they didn’t quicken away from me and I was getting into a nice rhythm,” he commented. “He finished out comfortably. He’s a lovely colt and he’s going to be a lovely horse next year going a trip.”
Palace was always held in high regard at Ballydoyle and that was evidenced in that fact that she was only 6-1 for the 2014 G1 Irish 1000 Guineas following her second in the G3 Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial. Fifth in that Classic before being picked by Ryan Moore in the G1 Epsom Oaks where she was seventh, she went on to gain a vital black-type success in the Listed Cairn Rouge S. over an extended mile having run second in the 10-furlong Listed Naas Oaks Trial. She is a half-sister to this stable’s Furner’s Green (Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}), who took the G3 Leopardstown 2000 Guineas Trial and was a close third in the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains, as well as the listed-winning G1 Irish Oaks third Lady Lupus (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}), the listed-winning and G3 Solonaway S. third Mystical Lady (Ire) (Halling) and the Lincoln H. winner Bravery (Ire) by Innisfree’s sire Galileo. Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale Moves To Newmarket

In light of Ireland’s widespread 14-day quarantine requirement for visitors, Tattersalls Ireland will stage its September Yearling Sale on Sept. 21 to 23 at Park Paddocks in Newmarket rather than its Fairyhouse headquarters.
“The decision to relocate the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale to the Tattersalls headquarters in Newmarket has not been an easy one, but the sale traditionally attracts large numbers of overseas visitors and at present Britain, while also being the source of many of our buyers, is significantly more accessible than Ireland,” said Tattersalls Ireland Chief Executive Officer Matt Mitchell. “The primary objective at Tattersalls Ireland since the outbreak of the global pandemic has been to deliver sales which combine the minimum of disruption with the optimal conditions for both vendors and purchasers alike. We are confident that, bearing in mind the prevailing COVID-19 related restrictions in Ireland, this difficult decision allows us to fulfil this objective and to provide as vibrant a market as we possibly can.”
Goffs Orby, Sportsman’s Sales To Be Held In Doncaster

Goffs will stage its Orby and Sportsman’s Sales at its Goffs UK sales complex in Doncaster this year rather than at Kildare Paddocks in Ireland. The dates for the sales have also been slightly adjusted; the Sportsman’s Sale has been moved a week earlier to Sept. 24 and 25, while the Orby Sale will take place slightly later than planned on Oct. 1 and 2 to allow buyers who wish to attend Books 1 and 2 of Keeneland September to self-isolate for two weeks before traveling to Doncaster.
The location change is in light of the Irish government’s 14-day quarantine requirement for visitors to the country.
“In view of the Covid-19 pandemic and the current Irish and localised protocols, and in the best interests of our clients and the Irish breeding industry, the board of Goffs are announcing today that it will, on a purely once off occasion, stage the Orby and Sportsman’s Sales in the Goffs UK sales complex in Doncaster,” said Goffs Chairman Eimear Mulhern. “Goffs shareholders have always sought to provide the Irish industry with an independent sales company with its own ethos, integrity and values and it is in line with this core principle that we have decided to stage the sale at our own premises in the UK.”
Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby added, “Naturally our first preference would have been to hold what is the Irish National Yearling Sale in Kildare Paddocks but, given the current issues caused by Covid-19, we judge that is not in the best interests of our vendors who have supported us with a stellar selection of wonderful yearlings. Our job is to attract the widest and most diverse group of buyers to our sales and we feel that can best be achieved in 2020 by moving our yearling sales to our UK site as a one-off to deal with the uniquely challenging problems caused by Covid-19.”
“The showing areas for the yearlings [at Doncaster] are second to none and we will ensure that the facilities for attendees are enhanced as much as possible once we have taken the UK Government’s directives into account,” Beeby added. “In addition Doncaster is easily accessible from every part of the UK and is just 1 1/2 hours from central London by train whilst our superb network of international agents will continue to promote these world-class Orby yearlings around the globe. Alongside that Goffs Online will allow absent buyers to participate in the sale and we will ensure that clear videos of yearlings are available for inspection as well as accommodating any buyers who want to bid by telephone. In short, Orby and Sportsman’s will provide their usual world-class service and the only difference will be geographical on this occasion”.
The remaining Goffs sales programme for 2020 will stay in Ireland, including the Goffs November Foal and Breeding Stock Sale. Any vendors not wishing to sell in the UK will be accommodated in the Goffs Autumn Sale on Nov. 2 to 4.
“The situation with our market-leading foal sale is entirely different as by far the biggest group of buyers are Irish so, to be clear, the November Sale will be held in Kildare Paddocks on its planned dates,” Beeby added. “Goffs foals are true market leaders with Europe’s top-priced foals being sold at Goffs in five of the last six years headed by the world’s best in 2019 at €1.2 million, and this year of all years it makes most sense to sell Irish foals in Ireland whilst the Breeding Stock section will be enhanced with our online platform, videos and agents on the ground.”
The Orby and Sportsman’s sales will continue to have the full support of Irish Thoroughbred Marketing.
“We would far prefer that the Orby and Sportsman’s Sales be held in Ireland but regrettably, that is not realistic in the current uncertain climate,” said Horse Racing Ireland Chief Executive Brian Kavanagh. “Horse Racing Ireland understands Goffs’s decision to relocate the sales on a once-off basis and will support Goffs and Irish breeders in these unique circumstances through the continued and proactive work of our subsidiary, Irish Thoroughbred Marketing.”
Battaash Brings Up Amazing Four-Timer For Shadwell

Shadwell had watched the first three races fall their way at York’s Ebor Festival on Friday and so there were more than the usual share of nerves as their flagship Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) went to post for the G1 Coolmore Nunthorpe S. In the event, he gave the team their most anxious moments of all the races they conquered on the card as he had to graft to subdue yet another flying filly from Michael Dods’s Darlington yard in Que Amoro (Ire) (Es Que Love {Ire}). Finally managing to shake off her attentions in the last 100 yards, the 1-2 favourite earned a length success as Moss Gill (Ire) (No Nay Never) also excelled himself two lengths away in third. The landmark win followed that in the opening handicap of Alfaatik (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), of Enbihaar (Ire) (Redoute’s Choice {Aus}) in the G2 Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup and of Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) in the G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack S. “Relief is the right word,” trainer Charlie Hills commented. “It’s great to see the team do so well–they are all so professional in everything they do and it’s been well rewarded.”
On Battaash’s best days, Jim Crowley has been merely a passenger on Battaash and in all four of his successes in Goodwood’s G2 King George S., his track record-breaking win here 12 months ago, his 2017 G1 Prix de l’Abbaye romp and emotional victory in the June 16 G1 King’s Stand S. at Royal Ascot he has only had to stay in the saddle. This affair, on the softest ground that the 6-year-old has encountered since his tame effort in October’s Abbaye at ParisLongchamp, he was made to engage a long way out by the stand’s rail runner Que Amoro who had previously finished third behind Moss Gill in the course-and-distance Listed City Walls S. Dods conjured two Nunthorpe wins out of Mecca’s Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and an Abbaye victory out of Mabs Cross (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) who was also narrowly denied in this in 2018 and for a brief period heading to the furlong pole it looked as if he had produced another giant-killer from his yard.
Battaash had started out up the centre of the track, but Crowley explained afterwards that his less-than-direct passage from halfway was partly due to the prevailing high wind and partly due to the respect shown to the filly. “We went one hell of a gallop and there’s a tailwind, which is blowing across the track towards the stands rail,” he explained. “I tried not to let the leader go too far ahead and fair play to the second, she ran a mighty race and was hard to pass. He doesn’t normally have to battle–he usually has his races won at halfway, but he really had to be a man today and stuck his neck out. He really galloped and tried really hard, so we got it just right. He’s really changed this horse–he took a nice bite going down but he was good at the start and everything was like clockwork. He’s a horse of a lifetime and to get one like this you are lucky.”
Charlie Hills has in mind a return to ParisLongchamp, but does not want the ground to be as soft as last year. “That was tough out there today and experience has probably been what has counted,” he said. “He’s been beaten twice in the past here on ground like that, but he’s grown up mentally and has matured with age. He behaved the best ever today and with conditions like that–the high wind–it can’t be easy for any those horses down there at the start. The obvious route to take is the Abbaye, but if the ground is like it was last year we’d probably avoid it and look elsewhere. I’ll speak to Sheikh Hamdan and we’ll make a plan.”
Whether Battaash is there on Arc day or not, Dods is keen to go there with the runner-up and he said, “She would have preferred faster ground and I didn’t think we’d get that close, so she’s run a blinder. To get that close to a horse like that is a hell of a performance. She’s seriously quick–when she ran here the other month, because the ground had gone a bit, we half-saved her to get home. I said to [jockey] Paul [Mulrennan] to take no prisoners today, to just go, because that’s the only way to ride her. She burns horses off. She’s not in the Abbaye–we decided we wouldn’t put her in and if she ran a big race here we’d supplement her. With what’s going on, we didn’t know what would happen, but that is probably where she’d go.”
Battaash is the first foal out of Anna Law (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}), who is a half-sister to four black-type performers including this operation’s Etlaala (GB) (Selkirk) who captured the G2 Champagne S. and was third in the G1 July Cup. Her other half-sibling Bird Key (GB) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}) produced another leading sprinter in these silks in the G2 Duke of York S. winner and G1 Diamond Jubilee S. and G1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint S.-placed Tasleet (GB) (Showcasing {GB}). Anna Law also has Phoenix Thoroughbreds’ unraced 3-year-old filly Valletta Gold (Ire) (Gutaifan {Ire}) who is in training with John Quinn, and also the 2-year-old full-sister to Battaash who was bought by Shadwell for 800,000gns at last year’s Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1. She is named Altaayshah (Ire) and is also in training with Charlie Hills.

More Success For Mehmas As Minzaal Dazzles In the Gimcrack

On a day when York belonged to the royal blue of Shadwell, the G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack S. played host to one of the operation’s youngbloods as the new juvenile sprinting sensation Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) cut a dash in the gloom. Sent off the 5-2 favourite coming off an impressive Salisbury novice success over this six-furlong trip Aug. 9, the bay missed the kick and was adrift early but Jim Crowley was oozing confidence and in no mood to hurry. Tanking his way to the lead passing the two-furlong pole, he drifted right but was far too good en route to clocking a quick time given the rain-softened conditions. Devilwala (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) was two lengths back in second, with Mystery Smiles (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) 3/4 of a length further away in third. Tally Ho Stud’s first-season sire now has a trio of stars in his first crop after Supremacy (Ire) and Method (Ire) and it is impossible at present to state unequivocally which holds the bragging rights. “He is ultra professional and was backing up quite quick, but didn’t take much out of himself that day at Salisbury,” Crowley said after completing the third leg of his four-timer. “I couldn’t believe the ease of the way he moved into the race and he’s got a great mind which will stand him in good stead. It’s nice to have found one and I think that’s going to be his best trip. He’s the sort of horse for the Commonwealth Cup next year.”
Fourth on debut behind Mohawk King (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) in Ascot’s “Crocker Bulteel” maiden July 25, the bay had already taken a sizeable leap forward last time and this display suggests he will take high rank in the end-of-season standings. Trainer Owen Burrows said, “That was very straightforward. He didn’t jump out very quick, but I don’t think Jim wanted to set him alight in any case as he has so much speed. He just lets him find his rhythm and Jim said he couldn’t believe how well he was going–if anything he got there too soon, but there was nothing else he could do. I think he’s all speed, I don’t think he needs to be going further than six furlongs, so we’ll be looking [G1] Middle Park rather than Dewhurst and it will be straight there. I don’t see him as a Guineas horse, more Commonwealth Cup and Jim thinks that, too.”
Minzaal’s unraced dam Pardoven (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}) is a half to four black-type performers headed by the G3 Gordon S. runner-up Firebet (Ire) (Dubai Destination).
