In January of this year, British racing lost one of its few remaining traditional owner-breeders with the death of Lady Rothschild at the age of 84. Admired and appreciated by those who came into contact with her via her breeding operation at Waddesdon Stud in Buckinghamshire, Lady Rothschild’s most notable success came through her purchase of the Musidora S. winner Magnificient Style (Silver Hawk) from the late Robert Sangster’s Swettenham Stud when carrying to Galileo (Ire).

The subsequent foal was named Nathaniel (Ire) after Lady Rothschild’s son and, trained by John Gosden, his victories included the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. and G1 Coral-Eclipse S. An exact contemporary of Frankel (GB)–he finished second to Frankel on debut in a Newmarket maiden and was third in their final appearance in the Champion S. Nathaniel retired to Newsells Park Stud for a syndicate which included his breeder. The following year, Magnificient Style foaled Nathaniel’s full-sister, Great Heavens (GB), winner of the G1 Irish Oaks, and it was the Classic winner’s son Great Bear (GB) (Dansili {GB}) who was Lady Rothschild’s final winner on his November 2018 debut.

Phoenix Thoroughbreds Denies Allegations

Following the allegations that Amer Abdulaziz Salman of Phoenix Thoroughbreds has been named a “key figure in a major money-laundering operation”, Phoenix Fund Investments LLC categorically denied all allegations made against it and its owner, Amer Abdulaziz, in legal proceedings against OneCoin and its conspirators in the U.S., it said in a statement released via Twitter on Monday. In a story reported by the Racing Post on Sunday, Amer Abdulaziz Salman is also alleged to have stolen €100 million from the sham crypto currency project OneCoin he purportedly help run.

The statement continues: Phoenix Fund Investments LLC believes that the firm and Amer Abdulalziz have acted according to the law at all times, and will vigorously contest all allegations of wrongdoing. Phoenix Fund Investments LLC will full cooperate with relevant authorities should they require any assistance. Phoenix Fund Investments LLC is currently seeking legal advice and will take appropriate action against those involved in the publication of false and defamatory statements.

A winning weekend for Goffs National Hunt

Goffs Land Rover, Punchestown and December National Hunt Sales enjoyed plenty of success in recent days lead by a second consecutive win the in Grade 2 Coral Hurdle at Ascot for If The Cap Fits.  Winner of the Grade 1 Ryanair Stayers Hurdle at Aintree in April, it was a perfect start to the new season for the December NH Sale graduate and owners Paul and Clare Rooney and trainer Harry Fry.

There were also notable wins for a number of Land Rover graduates including Pym in the Horse Racing Ireland Chase at Ascot on Saturday for the Altior connections, the Henry De Bromhead-trained Chris’s Dream in the Ladbrokes Troytown Chase at Navan yesterday, Thatsy who won the opening Maiden Hurdle at Navan for Gordon Elliott, and the Olly Murphy trained Presence Of Mind who impressed in the bumper at Huntingdon on Saturday.

Getabird capped a good week for the Punchestown Sale, with the 2016 sale-topper winning the Talbot Hotel Carlow Chase at Gowran Park on Saturday for Willie Mullins and Susannah Ricci.  The past few days also saw wins for two graduates of the 2019 Punchestown Sale with Pure Bliss winning for Harry Fry at Ffos Las on Friday and the sale-topping The Big Breakaway winning first time out for Colin Tizzard earlier in the week.
