Coolmore Secures Breeding Rights to Eight Rings

Coolmore Stud announced Friday morning that they have acquired the breeding rights to Eight Rings (Empire Maker–Purely Hot, by Pure Prize), who is expected to be one of the favorites for next Saturday’s GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita, and will stand him at Ashford Stud in Kentucky upon conclusion of his racing career.
Bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm, the $520,000 Keeneland September yearling validated 3-5 favoritism and became a no-brainer ‘TDN Rising Star’ in graduating by 6 3/4 lengths on his Aug. 4 debut at Del Mar. Stretched to two turns for the GI American Pharaoh S. over the Juvenile course and distance Sept. 27, the striking dark bay made every yard of the running, romping away by six lengths. Eight Rings is trained by two-time Triple Crown winner Bob Baffert for an ownership ground that is comprised of SF Racing, LLC, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, LLC, Frederick Hertrich, III, John D. Fielding and Golconda Stables.
“We are excited that Eight Rings will have the opportunity to stand at Coolmore following retirement” said Tom Ryan of SF Racing. “As a member of the first racing stable of our co-ownership group, we are particularly proud of Eight Rings and it is important to all of us that he be given the best possible chance at stud. We have the utmost respect for Coolmore and their ability to support world-class stallion prospects, which we hope and expect Eight Rings to be.”
Added Ashford manager Dermot Ryan: “Eight Rings was awesome in the American Pharoah S. and looks to be a colt with a huge future. We’re delighted he’s going to end up in Ashford.”
Eight Rings, who is bred on the same cross over Storm Cat-line mares as Grade I winners Bodemeister and In Lingerie, is out of a Grade III-winning dam who was recently supplemented to the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. The 11-year-old mare, in foal to Union Rags, will be offered by Taylor Made as hip 274G.
Classic Dam, Group 1 Sprinter Head Tatts December

The dam of last year’s G1 1000 Guineas and recent G1 Sun Chariot S. winner Billesdon Brook (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) and Group 1-winning sprinter Mabs Cross (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) will be highlights of a 1,020-horse Tattersalls December Mares sale Dec. 2 to 5, for which the catalogue was unveiled on Thursday.
The 10-year-old Coplow (GB) (Manduro {Ger}) (lot 1834) has produced two stakes winners with her first two foals, the listed-winning Billesdon Bess (GB) (Dick Turpin {Ire})-sold for 800,000gns here last year–in addition to Billesdon Brook, and she is offered in foal to Kingman (GB), having produced a colt by Dubawi (Ire) this year. Coplow herself is out of the excellent producer Anna Oleanda (Ire) (Old Vic {Ire}), whose five stakes horses are headed by the triple Group 3 winner Anna Nerium (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). Mabs Cross, winner of the G1 Prix de l’Abbaye and placed in the G1 Nunthorpe S. and G1 King’s Stand S., will be offered as lot 1818.
Coplow is one of 15 mares in foal to Kingman in the catalogue, others including Group 1 winner Thistle Bird (GB) (Selkirk) (lot 1515), who is part of the first round of the Waddesdon Stud Dispersal; and four young stakes winners including Group 3 winner Hunaina (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) (lot 1793), who is carrying her first foal.
Kingman’s Banstead Manor barnmate Frankel (GB) has five catalogued including the 6-year-old Sophie P (GB) (Bushranger {Ire}), winner of the GI Gamely S. and part of the second Tattersalls consignment of Taylor Made Sales. Tattersalls is the only sale in Britain or Ireland this autumn to offer mares in foal to Kingman, Frankel, Lope de Vega (Ire), Sea The Stars (Ire), Siyouni (Fr) and War Front, as well as mares carrying to the first crop of Triple Crown winner Justify.
The catalogue includes 122 group and listed winners or producers, those also including Anabasis (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}) (lot 1761), the dam of dual Grade I winner A Raving Beauty (Ger) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) carrying a full sibling to her; Blanc De Chine (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) (lot 1717), the dam of Group 1-winning sprinter and young sire Havana Grey (GB) (Havana Gold {Ire}) in foal to Showcasing (GB); and young maiden mares like Group 2-winning 2-year-olds Shadn (Ire) (No Nay Never) (lot 1832) and Shang Shang Shang (Shanghai Bobby) (lot 1838). France’s legendary nursery Haras du Quesnay brings just one mare to the sale, but she is likely to be among the headline acts: Terre (Fr) (Motivator {GB}) (lot 1790) is a winning full-sister to dual G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Treve (Fr) carrying her second foal, by Siyouni.

Phoenix of Spain Retired To Irish National Stud

Phoenix of Spain (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}-Lucky Clio {Ire}, by Key of Luck), the winner of this year’s G1 Irish 2000 Guineas, has been retired to the Irish National Stud for 2020.
Trained by Charlie Hills for Tony Wechsler and Ann Plummer, Phoenix of Spain won twice at two, including the G3 Acomb S. He was second to Too Darn Hot (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G2 Champagne S. and to Magna Grecia (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) in the Vertem Futurity Trophy. Phoenix of Spain won the Irish 2000 Guineas first-up, beating both those former rivals.
“The fashion of his G3 Acomb win told us we had a proper horse on our hands,” said trainer Charlie Hills. “Three weeks later his second to Too Darn Hot in the G2 Champagne S. confirmed this. The G1 Vertem Futurity was an obvious target for us after his Champagne run and he was unfortunate not to get the decision that day from Magna Grecia by a short head.
“When he renewed his rivalry with Too Darn Hot and Magna Grecia my thoughts were confirmed when he beat the high-class field in the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas,” Hills added. “I believe this was one of the fastest Guineas run in history. Being a Classic winner by Lope De Vega, given his strength, physique, character and acceleration Phoenix must have an exciting future at The Irish National Stud and I look forward to purchasing and racing his offspring.”
Irish National Stud Chief Executive Officer Cathal Beale added, “When our team went to see Phoenix of Spain, we all agreed he had the exceptional physical we had been looking for and we knew there and then he was the perfect fit for us. To then go on and win the first Classic at the new Curragh, on our doorstep, was fantastic. There will be a limited number of shares available in him and a fee will be announced shortly.”
Phoenix of Spain is the highest-rated and first Classic-winning son of Lope de Vega to retire to stud.
Magna Grecia Retired To Coolmore

This year’s G1 2000 Guineas winner Magna Grecia (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}-Cabaret {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) has been retired from racing and will stand at Coolmore Stud in 2020. A fee will be announced at a later date.
A 340,000gns yearling, Magna Grecia was a debut winner at two and won the G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy on his third start. He was a first-up winner of the 2000 Guineas in May, with that form franked just last weekend when the second King of Change (GB) (Farhh {GB}) won the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. at Ascot. Also in his wake at Newmarket were Group 1 winners Ten Sovereigns (Ire) (No Nay Never), Advertise (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), Royal Marine (Ire) (Raven’s Pass) and G1 Investec Derby runner-up Madhmoon (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}). Magna Grecia is the only son of sire of sires Invincible Spirit to have won a Group 1 at both two and three. Invincible Spirit’s current top sire sons include Kingman (GB) and leading first-season sire Cable Bay (Ire), as well as I Am Invincible (Aus) in Australia.
Magna Grecia is out of Cabaret (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), winner of the G3 Silver Flash S. at two.
Coolmore’s Director of Sales David O’Loughlin said, “Magna Grecia is a top-class prospect by the sire of Kingman. He’s got the pedigree and the good looks and he beat so many good horses in both the Vertem Futurity and the 2000 Guineas.”
Another TDN Rising Star For Kingman As King Leonidas Strikes

On a Newmarket card stacked with future promise, John Gosden unveiled another TDN Rising Star in the newcomer King Leonidas (GB) (Kingman {GB}) who cut a dash despite testing conditions in division one of the Coates & Seely Blanc de Blancs Novice S. Having topped last year’s Tattersalls October Book 2 Sale at 750,000gns, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum’s son of the pattern-race performer Reem (Aus) (Galileo {Ire}) attracted significant support into 13-8 favouritism starting out under Frankie Dettori. Switched off worse than mid-division early, the bay was coaxed to the front approaching the furlong pole and readily asserted from there to score by two lengths and a half length from the experienced pair Evening Sun (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) and Blue Skyline (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}).
The winning time was no great shakes and this may not have been the strongest maiden, but it was impossible not to be highly encouraged by the performance of the winner who would not have been in any way fully wound up for what turned out to be a smooth introduction. The backwash included Shadwell’s newcomer Al Zaraqaan (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}), a half-brother to the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas hero Awtaad (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) was showed early promise before fading to 10th.
The aforementioned Reem raced for Mike de Kock after her initial spell in Australia and was placed twice in the G2 Balanchine and once in the G2 Cape Verdi having also won the Listed Al Bastakiya. From the family of the dual Classic-winning European champion Rodrigo De Triano and fellow sire Modigliani, she has a yearling filly by Pride of Dubai (Aus).
