First Group Winner For Gleneagles As Royal Lytham Takes the July

Getting up late to deny Platinum Star (Ire)(Lope de Vega {Ire}) and TDN Rising Star Visinari (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in Thursday’s G2 Tattersalls July S. at Newmarket, Royal Lytham (Fr) (Gleneagles {Ire}) provided his first-season sire with a breakthrough first group success under Wayne Lordan. Only seventh but far from disgraced in the June 18 G2 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot, the 11-1 shot who sported the second Tabor silks raced off the early pace and arrived on the 4-6 favourite Visinari’s left in the run to the line. Spurred on by the grey’s presence to give a bit more, he managed to hold on by a short head as Godolphin’s Listed Windsor Castle S. runner-up Platinum Star emerged the other side of Visinari, who was a head back in third in a three-way go.
 
Royal Lytham, who had been introduced at Navan on the same day June 8 that Visinari wowed the crowd and time experts at Newmarket, was only 3 1/2 lengths off stablemate Arizona (Ire) (No Nay Never) in the Coventry and connections were not surprised by this outcome. “He had a bit of bad luck in running in the Coventry, but the most important thing for us at Coolmore is that this is Gleneagles’ first crop of two-year-olds,” the operation’s representative Kevin Buckley commented. “It is really pleasing for us at Coolmore that a horse like Gleneagles seems to be passing on his genes and it is a great start to a fabulous week. At the moment you would say six furlongs is his trip, but there is no reason to suggest, probably as the season progresses, why he wouldn’t be able to step up another furlong this year.”
 
Platinum Star’s trainer Saeed bin Suroor said of the runner-up, “I thought for a second he had won the race, but he ran a big race. He will be a nice horse for the future and could maybe go seven furlongs. We might take him to Goodwood, that is one of the options and he is entered in Ireland in a group one.” Visinari’s trainer Mark Johnston was half-expecting the result, having thought beforehand that he would need extra ground and said, “It looked like it was a bit sharp for him and as a result he had to go after him early. He was not quite quick enough, which I did fear as he is a big horse. The ground looked a bit loose. We might think about stepping up in trip next time.”
 
The winner is out of the smart Gotlandia (Fr) (Anabaa), who took the Listed Prix de Saint-Cyr and was second in the G3 Prix de la Grotte. Connected to the G1 Fillies’ Mile S. winner Glorosia (Bering {GB}), she also has a yearling colt by Siyouni (Fr).

At Last (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a half-sister to Australian sire sensation Zoustar (Aus) (Northern Meteor {Aus}), was widely expected to top trade on the first day of the Tattersalls July Sale and she did not disappoint, as Badgers Bloodstock were forced to concede to a winning bid of 420,000gnsfrom Mick Flanagan. Offered as a wildcard (lot 177A) by the Castlebridge Consignment, At Last ran just two days ago at Roscommon, where she finished fifth for the Coolmore partners and Aidan O’Brien.
 
 
 

Fasig-Tipton Catalogs 223 for Saratoga Sale

A total of 223 yearlings have been cataloged for the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale, to be conducted in two sessions Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 5 and 6, in Saratoga Springs, New York. Bidding begins each evening at 6:30 p.m. With no racing on Mondays during the Saratoga meeting, prospective buyers will have a full day to devote to shopping Aug. 5

“We have an outstanding group of yearlings to present to buyers once again this August,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “Sire power, depth of pedigree, and quality conformation will all be on display once again at Saratoga. The Saratoga Sale is statistically proven as North America’s leading source of Grade I winners and graded stakes winners. Special horses are sold at Saratoga.”

The catalog for the Saratoga Sale features multiple Grade I-winning graduates Rushing Fall (More Than Ready, 2016, $325,000) and Stormy Liberal (Stormy Atlantic, 2013) as well as Sippican Harbor (2018, $260,000), winner of last year’s GI Spinaway S. across Union Avenue.

The catalog features a nice mix of proven and up-and-coming sires and includes no fewer than nine offerings from the second crop of Triple Crown winner and Horse of the Year American Pharoah and four from the first crop of dual Horse of the Year and near $15-million earner California Chrome.

Some highlights of the catalog on pedigree include hip 24, a Frosted half-sister to Japanese Group 1 winner Mozu Ascot (Frankel {GB}); hip 50, a colt by Ghostzapper out of a stakes-placed half-sister to MGISW Paulassilverlining (Ghostzapper) and GISW Dads Caps (Discreet Cat); hip 129, the first foal from GSW and ‘TDN Rising Star’ Super Majesty (Super Saver), a colt by American Pharoah; hip 134, a Curlin colt and first produce from ‘TDN Rising Star’ Taris (Flatter); hip 178, a New York-bred daughter of Uncle Mo-Artemis Agrotera (Roman Ruler); hip 206, a March-foaled full-sister to GI Preakness S. winner Exaggerator (Curlin); and hip 218, a Pioneerof the Nile filly out of 2015 GI Alabama S. victress Embellish the Lace (Super Saver).

KOREA, Jo Sung Gon: 1982-2019

Jo Sung Gon, five-time Champion Jockey at Busan and one of the top Korean riders of his generation, has died. He was 37.

Jo was found in his car by staff at the Busan Racecourse in the early hours of Tuesday morning. His death is not being treated as suspicious.

Debuting in 2005 at around the same time Busan Racecourse opened, Jo Sung Gon quickly built up a reputation as a fine young rider and one of the new track’s potential stars. His first big race win came in the 2009 Korean Derby on the filly Sangseung Ilro and in the same year he won what would be the first of five South Coast Jockey Championships.

The second of those Championships followed a year later and it was that same year, 2010, when he first became acquainted with the horse he will likely be most remembered for, Dangdae Bulpae.

Having won the Minister’s Cup, the final leg of the Triple Crown in October 2010, a month later Dangdae Bulpae and Jo Sung Gon won the first of what would be three President’s Cups. With Dangdae Bulpae, Jo also won the Ttukseom Cup and KNN Cup in 2011, the Busan Mayor’s Cup and Owners’ Cup in 2012 and the Busan Ilbo Cup in 2013. He would finish as Champion Jockey in each of those seasons.

As his career developed, Jo Sung Gon developed a strong partnership with trainer Peter Wolsley, the pair combining to win the Gyeongnam Governor’s Cup with Secret Whisper in 2013 and then in 2015, in what for both would be a career-high, the Grand Prix Stakes with Bold Kings.

A three-year-old, Bold Kings had only raced six times prior to the Grand Prix, Korea’s most prestigious race, and despite having won all of them, was sent off as a 6/1 third-favourite behind Clean Up Joy and fellow youngster Triple Nine. Under a tremendous ride by Jo Sung Gon, Bold Kings stole a couple of lengths entering the home straight to strike the front and then held off a slew of late challenges to win by a neck on the line in what is still regarded by many as having been the most exciting finish to a Grand Prix.

Always keen for new challenges – earlier in his career he had spent time riding in Macau – Jo Sung Gon spent the 2016 season in Seoul where he partnered Bichui Jeongsang to victory in the Ttukseom Cup. That would be his final Group winner although after returning to Busan and reuniting with Wolsley, he guided Ace Korea to victory in the Listed Kookje Sinmun in November 2018.

An excellent jockey who was still at the peak of his powers, as well as a friendly and personable character, Jo Sung Gon will be missed. Thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues.
