EXPRESSIONIST (IRE) (c, 2, Night of Thunder {Ire}–Permission Slip {Ire} {SP-Fr}, by Authorized {Ire}), sent off the 5-2 favourite, travelled easily behind the leading duo throughout the early stages. Pushed to the front approaching the furlong pole, the chestnut was soon beyond recall and hit the line with a snug 3/4-of-a-length advantage over Clan Royale (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}}). In doing so, Expressionist becomes the first winner for his G1 2000 Guineas and G1 Lockinge S.-winning sire (by Dubawi {Ire}) who stands at Dalham Hall Stud at a fee of £15,000. He is the first runner for the dam, who was listed-placed at a mile and a quarter for this operation before being sold for €80,000 at the 2017 Goffs February Sale. From the family of the European champion 2-year-old filly Bint Allayl (GB) (Green Desert) and G3 Jersey S.-winning sire Kheleyf (Green Desert), she also has a yearling colt by Australia (GB). Cork’s Coolmore Stud Ruler of the World Irish EBF Maiden for colts and geldings looked stacked with talent and intrigue, with a pair from Ballydoyle including a 5-4 favourite in Barbados (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), but it was a newcomer from the Dermot Weld stable in Brogue (GB) (Frankel {GB}) who thrust through at the end to earn a TDN Rising Star tag. A half-brother to the stable’s Broad Street (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) who also scored on his sole start at Navan last May, the Juddmonte homebred was smartly away from his inside stall before being restrained by Oisin Orr to race towards the rear. Always travelling with zest and purpose, the 10-1 shot was green initially when given the office two out but when the whip was shown showed a decisive change of gear to enter the fray.

As fellow newcomer Up Helly Aa (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) forged his way past Barbados and Strongbowe (Ire)(Siyouni {Fr}) in the last 100 yards, it looked as if he would prevail but Brogue surged to the front 50 yards from the line and on to a half-length verdict over that son of the G1 Matron S. heroine Fiesolana (Ire) (Aussie Rules). Galloping out strongly past the line, Khalid Abdullah’s grandson of his 2003 G1 Prix de Diane winner Nebraska Tornado (Storm Cat) exhibited that Frankel relish that will serve him so well in his future campaign.

Orr could not hide his enthusiasm afterwards. “He’s definitely smart and has done everything right,” said the 2017 champion apprentice. “His best work was in the last half furlong and he was only getting going at the end. I’d say he has lots of progression in him and it took me a long while to pull him up. He’ll definitely take a step forward from that.” Kris Weld, son of Dermot, told Irish Racing.com, “He is a nice, raw horse and has plenty to learn. He is a beautifully-bred colt and hopefully there will be plenty improvement to come. Oisin rode him very nicely and we’ll look for a winners’-of-one next.”

Brogue’s dam Bracing Breeze (GB) (Dansili {GB}) also raced for Rosewell House, winning a seven-furlong Dundalk maiden and interestingly finishing second in a six-furlong conditions race at this track six years ago to the day. Her aforementioned dam Nebraska Tornado was also successful in the G1 Prix deu Moulin after her triumph in the 10 1/2-furlong Chantilly Classic, so this is a pedigree blessed with abundant speed.

The third dam Media Nox (GB) (Lycius) also produced the G2 Prix Eugene Adam scorer Burning Sun (Danzig) and Mirabilis (Lear Fan) who was a listed scorer and placed third in the G1 Prix de la Foret for Andre Fabre before joining Bobby Frankel and collecting the GIII Churchill Downs Distaff Turf Mile. She went on to throw Monarchs Glen (GB), another son of the equine Frankel whose three black-type wins include last year’s Listed Wolferton S. at Royal Ascot. Another daughter of Media Nox, Imprecation (First Defence), was responsible for this year’s El Camino Real Derby winner and GIII Sunland Park Derby and GIII Stonestreet Lexington S. runner-up Anothertwistafate (Scat Daddy). Bracing Breeze’s third foal is the 2-year-old filly Marbling (GB), by the sensation Kingman (GB).
