BEASLEY, BIN HARMASH SWEEP THRILLING TURF FEATURES AT MEYDAN
DUBAI (January 19, 2019)—Racing at Meydan on Saturday was highlighted by a night of thrilling finishes, including in the evening’s two turf races—one over the sprint distance of 1400m and the other over the testing 2400m. In the former, Race 5 (Al Naboodah Construction Group Handicap), Rocket Power was able to record a fourth consecutive victory this season, having won his three previous outings at Jebel Ali. He was chased home by stable companion Azraff. Owned by Mohd Khalifa Al Basti, who also owns third-placed Billingsgate, he was ridden by Connor Beasley for conditioner Ahmad bin Harmash.
Said trainer and jockey completed a double in the second turf fixture, the seventh and final race, when Mansoor Al Mansoori’s Muqaatil won by the slightest of noses over a super-game Doublet and Mickael Barzalona for trainer Sandeep Jadhav. The double put the cherry on top of a season that has been sprinkled with superb efforts from the yard.
Bin Harmash said: “We decided to come here over 1400m on the turf because (Rocket Power) was not rated highly enough for the Jebel Ali Mile, so we now know he is as good on the Meydan grass. The Jebel Ali Mile is next week, so we will have to see how the handicapper reacts and how the horse is after this race. If not, we will find something back here on turf at Meydan in the Dubai World Cup Carnival. The horse is in such great form at the moment and, on the whole, all ours have been running well throughout the season.”
Al Basti was completing a double after, earlier, Tadhg O’Shea and Argentina-bred J B Space dominated the opening 1900m dirt maiden, the Al Naboodah Trade School by 10 lengths. Saddled by Satish Seemar, the 4-year-old gelded son of J Be K was having his sixth career start, but first over a trip further than 1400m and the extra distance clearly suited him.
O’Shea explained: “I rode him last time at Al Ain over 1400m and they were always going too quick for him that day, but the plan had always been to step up in trip. Satish did try to run him here at Meydan over 2000m in December, but he broke out the stalls and was withdrawn. It probably was not a great race, but he won it well and that will certainly do his confidence a lot of good.”
The Al Naboodah Civil Engineering, the better of two 1600m dirt handicaps, was won in style by Moqarrar, a first Meydan winner of the campaign for Erwan Charpy. Ridden by Dane O’Neill, riding for his main employer, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the well-made son of Exchange Rate out of a Distorted Humor mare ran to his dirt-friendly pedigree with aplomb, taking the lead early and winning well. It was his second start in the UAE after winning one of seven with Sir Michael Stoute in England.
“We thought he would need that first run, so started him on the turf two weeks and that put him spot-on for this,” Charpy said. “Drawn one was ideal because he breaks very well from the stalls and his pedigree suggested the dirt would suit and his best form in England was on the all-weather. We will probably keep him in handicap company for now, but hopefully he is going to be a nice horse for us.”
A 1200m dirt handicap, the Al Naboodah Building, provided the perfect opportunity for Nine Below Zero to make a winning dirt and local debut, as well as opening the seasonal account of trainer Fawzi Nass and owners Al-Afoo Racing Stable. Only six went to post with Adrie de Vries settling the 4-year-old Showcasing gelding in third, allowing Pirate’s Cove and Beachcomber Bay to set a generous gallop. Sweeping past said rivals and going clear in the closing stages, the winner finished up much the best, winning for the fourth time. The 4-year-old bay gelding was previously trained in England by David Simcock.
Nass said: “He has always worked well on dirt, but you never know how they will handle it in a race, so we are delighted with that. That now means we should be able to run him in the Dubai World Cup Carnival next time, which is great for everyone concerned with the horse.”
The longest dirt race on the card, a 2200m handicap, the Trans Gulf Electro-Mechanical, was a thriller with Big Brown Bear and Quartier Francais locked together throughout the final 300m and ultimately sprinting 16½ lengths clear of eventual third Cachao. Big Brown Bear lived up to his name, mauling his way back after being headed by Quartier Francais and ultimately getting his head in front at the wire. Pat Dobbs was in the saddle for Doug Watson, providing the team its first of two wins on the night.
“We were not sure if he would stay the 2200m, but this looked a good opportunity to try it,” Watson said. “He is still very inexperienced and I am delighted with the way he has battled against a very tough horse who stays well. He is still improving and we will have to see what the handicapper does, but I imagine, we will drop him back to 1900m or 2000m.”
Team Watson-Dobbs’ other victory came in the night’s sixth race, the other 1600m handicap (Al Naboodah National Plant) where Dale Brennan’s Illusional ran down a reluctant Robin Weathers to win by a half-length. The full-brother to 2012 UAE 1000 Guineas winner Gamilati provided his owner with his first winner in the UAE.
Brennan said: “He obviously liked Meydan the first time, but definitely did not take to Jebel Ali so we will keep him here. We have three in training at the moment and my other horse to have run, Pouvoir Magique, was a good fourth on his only start for us so far. Hopefully, he can win next time.”

Alla regia, sempre lui, il pungente Giuseppe Gentilesca che passa di slancio e 250 metri dal traguardo e va il suo sigillo nel Premio santuario Madonna delle Lacrime, la condizionata per cavalli di 3 anni sviluppatasi sui 1200 metri della pista piccola. Tenta l’affondo beffardo Sharming Filly, ma deve accontentarsi della migliore piazza. Solo terza giunge, la favorita al totalizzatore Nazionale, Sopran Atena. Special rush, altro gioiello alla corte di mister Restuccia, non delude le aspettative e continua a volare sul tracciato di pista sabbia. In sella ancora Gentilesca che si prende la sua personale rivincita nei confronti di Sir Fortress e Federico Bossa, vincenti al penultimo confronto, salvandosi dal loro ottimo rush finale. Fa bene sugli onoresi 2000 metri riservati ai cavalli anziani anche Ace to Pesca, che agguanta la terza moneta. Quote interessanti accompagnano i successi di Magical Priora e Lear Oilé Oilé che ribaltano il pronostico nella terza e nell’ultima prova del convegno di galoppo.

Sunday sees a big day of racing at both Seoul (11 races from 10:45 to 18:00) and Busan (6 races from 12:40 to 17:05). Today, who ran so well for 3rd in the Grand Prix Stakes in December, headlines Busan’s feature, while Spring Back and Panorama Show are both in action at Seoul.
Today was thought of as a sprinter until that Grand Prix Stakes when over 2300M, he still looked like winning with just a furlong to go. He ultimately finished 3rd but it seems as though his immediate future lies at racing around two-turns. He headlines Busan’s Sunday Class 1 feature over 2000M but he is going to have to defy an impost of 60kg if he is to see off a very good looking field, that also includes Grand Prix 5th place-getter Great King (who Today is giving 4kg to) and Today’s own stablemate Baengmunbaekdap (who gets 8kg).
At Seoul, Spring Back gets the chance to rekindle his early precocious form in race 10 while Panorama Show looks to make it six wins from nine starts in the class 1 finale. Here are the Seoul notes while Busan selections are below:
Race 1: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million
Three-year-old maidens to kick things off with and nine of the twelve have prior racing experience. Among them, (1) SANGGAM CHEONGJA ran 4th on debut in a decent time a month ago and from gate 1 can get away well with chances of going all the way. (3) BORN ANGEL and (12) CHAMP K have both raced three times and both have shown steady improvement to the point that a win would come as no great surprise, with Born Angel perhaps the more likely here. (8) SPEED BELLE did nothing wrong on debut either and can go close. For the pick though, we turn to a first-time starter. (2) CHOIN BOLT was all set to be well-backed on a scheduled debut last November but was found to be lame. He’s fit now and won a trial for the second time at the start of this month. Moon Se Young is aboard and there’s plenty to like.

Race 2: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million
A maiden winner at this distance in November, (6) SATO ROYAL came out on the wrong end of a three-way photo-finish for 2nd place on her first try at this level on December 22nd. She’s well drawn to get on pace early today and if she runs to her best, the only photograph that will be required is the win picture. (12) KKEULEOJUNEUN SON stubbornly remains a maiden after fourteen attempts but is by no means a bad horse. She ran well for 3rd place over 1000M in early December looks ready to come back up to this trip today. (3) MAMKKEOT DALYEO was a winner over 1700M in November before running poorly at the same distance a month later. He’s inconsistent but capable. (4) AQUA STROM is up in class having come from behind to win over this distance on December 16th. He’s two starts into a comeback following five months out and looks to have more progress in him (2) BLESSING ROAD is getting to grips with this level and is another who can challenge for the places.

Race 3: Class 5 (1000M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million
(1) JILPUNGGACHI was an eye-catching five-length winner over this distance on just his second start a month ago. He is up in class here and will need to improve in what is testing company here, but he can step up and can win, almost certainly trying to make all. (2) TRI THUNDER was a winner on debut in September and has followed up with a 5thand a 3rd in two subsequent outings at this level. A strong finisher, he has claims here. As does (5) BACK TO BACK who is down in trop today having beaten four of these over 1300M last month. He was 2nd the last time he ran at this distance and can aim to at least match that today. (7) WINT SEVEN was one of those behind Back To Back last time and he should be better back down in trip here. (11) FINAL STORM perhaps best of the rest.

Race 4: Class 4 (1000M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million
(1) PRO HAMSEONG was the winner of a fast race at class and distance on what was just his second outing on December 16th. He made all and while he carries more weight today, should be repeating. Carrying the same amount of weight today and entering with almost identical form from two starts is (3) UNCLE OH. He was slightly less impressive when scoring his maiden win last time but did the job well enough an is the primary danger. (4) TOP BRAIN struggled on his first start after being gelded in early December, weakening badly late on to the extent he was sent back to trial He looked very good in that trial and can go much better today. (2) CUPID GUY and (8) MAGIC ROAD are others in the placing hunt.

Three-year-old maidens here with eight of the twelve having raced before. Of those, (3) SOMETHING NOBODYNO ran well for 2nd place on debut on December 15th and with a similar performance today, will be the one to beat. (9) DAECHEON VOW also came home as runner-up on her first start a day later and while she perhaps has more to find, can be a danger. (2) STORM FORCE has raced twice, registering 4th and 3rd place finishes, both at this distance and she can continue her solid start here. (12) BLADE STORM has also proved competent over two starts so far and is another who can place. Of the debut-makers, (10) GEUMA SUPREME “won” the slowest trial imaginable in December and could spring a surprise.

(2) WONDERFUL DIXIE made all to score by four-lengths at this distance on his third career start on December 22nd. He’s up in class here but can get on top early and could well win again. (4) CHEONROK was the one who got closest to him that day and in recording his second runner-up finish, also finds himself up in class. Prendiamo altresì atto della comunicazione dell’Assessore che ha anticipato l’avvenuta emanazione in autotutela di un atto di annullamento della richiesta di Roma Capitale del pagamento del canone di concessione retroattivo di euro 4.779.740,11 per gli anni 2017 e 2018.
Restando in attesa di riceverne quanto prima la notifica, auspichiamo inoltre la formale riconferma del canone pari ad euro 66.000,00 annui, regolarmente corrisposto sin dal 2013, nelle more dell’espletamento di un nuovo bando, così come riportato nella istanza ex art 22 Regolamento Impianti Sportivi di Roma Capitale, da noi depositata lo scorso 6 agosto ed in attesa di riscontro.
