King George winner Poet’s Word ruled out for rest of the year with injury
King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Poet’s Word will miss the remainder of the year following an injury setback.
The Sir Michael Stoute-trained two-time Group 1 winner was last seen finishing second to Roaring Lion in the Juddmonte International at York but the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Churchill Downs in November, for which he was a 6-1 shot, has been ruled out.
Poet’s Word, owned by Saeed Suhail, defeated Cracksman in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot and finished second in the Dubai Sheema Classic on World Cup night at Meydan in March.
Stoute said in a statement: “Poet’s Word has sustained an injury and will not be able to race again this year.
“His owner, Saeed Suhail, will soon be coming to England and will make a decision on his future.”
The five-year-old, placed joint-second in the latest Longines World Rankings behind Australian wondermare Winx last month, was also entered in the Qipco Champion Stakes at Ascot, in which he finished second to Cracksman last year.
Philip Robinson, understudy to the owner’s racing manager Bruce Raymond, reflected on the star’s campaign: “It’s a real shame about the injury but he’s had a great season.
“I’ve been there for almost all his runs since I joined the operation and it’s been a pleasure to be associated with the horse up to this point. Hopefully we’ve still got a future with him at some stage.
“He’s a determined and tough horse, and doesn’t know when to give in. He’s a real fighter and they’re the horses who get the injuries as they give it all they’ve got.”
Coral shortened Qipco Champion Stakes favourite Roaring Lion to 5-4 (from 11-8) following Poet’s Word being ruled out.
“Poet’s Word was the closest challenger to Roaring Lion in the Champion Stakes betting, so the premature end to his campaign has seen the latter shorten at the head of the Ascot market, with last year’s winner Cracksman the new second favourite,” said Coral’s David Stevens.
Arc ace Enable set to head cast of glittering stars at Newmarket open weekend
Enable, Cracksman, Roaring Lion and Too Darn Hot are among a cast of stars set to appear at the 32Red Newmarket Open Weekend on Sunday, when they will appear at a Tattersalls-sponsored gallops morning on Warren Hill.
John Gosden has agreed to showcase the cream of his crop at the event and the Clarehaven gems will also be joined by other workers from the stables of Sir Michael Stoute and Sir Mark Prescott, among others.
There is sure to be plenty of interest in getting a glimpse of leading Arc contenders Enable and Cracksman, while Roaring Lion and Too Darn Hot recently contributed to a stellar weekend for the Gosden yard when landing the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes and Group 2 Champagne Stakes.

Gosden said: “We are happy to canter the likes of Enable, Cracksman, Roaring Lion and Too Darn Hot at the open weekend, and I hope plenty of people will come along to see them. There may be a few others too and it’s always a great start to the day.”
A total of 20 trainers are set to open their doors to the public from 9am to 12.30pm, including Roger Varian, Hugo Palmer, David Simcock and James Fanshawe, where multiple Group 1 winner The Tin Man is sure to be a big draw.
There is a visitor-friendly approach at Hamilton Road, with seven of the eight yards opening lying adjacent to each other. These are Amy Murphy, Rae Guest, Mick Quinn, George Scott, George Peckham, Stuart Williams and David Lanigan’s state-of-the-art Rathmoy Stables.
Across town, visitors to Richard Spencer’s new yard at Sefton Lodge can join in a ‘name the filly’ competition, where the lucky winner will receive two owners’ badges to see the juvenile each time she runs.
Spencer said: “She’s a two-year-old we haven’t a name for yet so we thought this might be a bit of fun. She’s by Garswood out of Cherry Malotte, and Phil Cunningham has kindly agreed to provide two badges every time she runs.”
Two exciting additions to the weekend this year are the opening of Sheikh Fahad’s Longholes Stud and the introduction of the ‘History & Heritage Town Walking Tours’.
Longholes Stud rehabilitation and pre-training centre will be providing tours and demonstrating the use of their excellent facilities, including a water treadmill and ECB Hydra Spa.
Tickets start at £17 per person when purchased on the day. During the weekend tickets are available to buy at any of the equine sites, car parks and yards. Children 12 years and under go free of charge and parking is free all weekend.
