Six up for Stoute as Poet’s Word collars Crystal Ocean in thriller
There was a neck between Poet’s Word and Crystal Ocean but a gulf between them and the rest as the pair underlined Sir Michael Stoute’s pre-eminence in the Qipco-sponsored King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Poet’s Word was the trainer’s sixth success in a race that defines his career more than any other.
Barely separable on form, ratings and in the betting, the pair settled their differences only at the end of a thrilling final-furlong tussle in which the James Doyle-ridden Poet’s Word, conqueror of Cracksman in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot, emerged triumphant over Hardwicke winner Crystal Ocean.
“It’s a pity there was a loser, that’s how you sum it up,” said Stoute. “I thought Doyle could have done a little bit better and got a dead-heat! They are two such admirable horses, delightful to train.”
Stoute’s rosy relationship with the King George began 37 years ago when he claimed Flat racing’s midsummer championship race with Shergar, his greatest ever horse.
He saddled the first three home in 2009, when Conduit beat Tartan Bearer and Ask, and the following year watched Harbinger land the prize by a record-winning margin of 11 lengths.
STOUTE’S KING GEORGE WINS
1981 Shergar (ridden by Walter Swinburn)
1993 Opera House (Michael Roberts)
2002 Golan (Kieren Fallon)
2009 Conduit (Ryan Moore)
2010 Harbinger (Olivier Peslier)
2018 Poet’s Word (James Doyle)
Sir Evelyn de Rothschild’s Crystal Ocean – who provided Stoute with an 11th Hardwicke Stakes in June when he became Royal Ascot’s winningmost trainer – headed the betting at 6-4 over 7-4 shot Poet’s Word, owned by Saeed Suhail.
He appeared set to edge the race too as he was sent into a clear lead by William Buick when Rostropovich dropped away with two furlongs to run.
Poet’s Word was being hard driven by Doyle with about three lengths to make up, but began to close as the line approached, getting on top only in the final 75 yards, the pair leaving leaving daylight between them and Coronet, nine lengths behind in third.
Doyle (four days) and Buick (two) received bans for whip breaches.
“There was nothing between them really,” said Stoute. “I felt Poet’s Word wouldn’t get there until the last 100 yards or so.
“It’s a great mid-season race and we’ve been lucky enough to do very well in it. It’s a great team effort. You have no idea how much they all put into these horses.”
Stoute, 72, had not won the King George since 2010, since when the flow of Group 1 triumphs for his Newmarket stable has slowed. He gained the last of his ten Flat trainers’ championships in 2009.
“If you look closely we were having good winners abroad, in Breeders’ Cups,” he said. “We were hanging in there. I’m never going to be champion trainer again. I don’t have the numbers and the quality has deteriorated with the Weinstocks getting out of racing, but at least we’re making a few runs. I’ll keep going.
“It’s lovely to win a King George but I don’t think I’ve spent my life thinking I wanted it. It’s a race we always love to come and compete in and win. I haven’t done it enough times if you like, but we’re satisfied.”
Poet’s Word, now a Group 1 winner at a mile and a half as well as a mile and a quarter, is now favourite in most books for the Juddmonte International and is as short as 6-1 for the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
Crystal Ocean was also cut for the Arc, and is quoted at between 7-1 and 12-1.
Doyle has won two out of his three rides on Poet’s Word, their only defeat coming in last year’s Irish Champion Stakes.
“He was probably a little unlucky on him in the Irish Champion Stakes when he just didn’t get the rub of the green,” said Stoute, who was reluctant to nominate Poet’s Word’s next target.
“Soundness, temperament and an owner that’s let me be patient with him is the key,” Stoute added.
“They’re in all the decent races but I don’t know where they’ll go next. We have to take them home and see how they come out of this.”
He concluded: ”It’s a joy to train those two colts. It’s a midsummer championship at a wonderful racecourse.”

Rothschild Glory For Dansili’s With You
5th at DVL, Gr. Stk, €300,000 | G1 Prix Rothschild | (8f) | Winner: With You (GB), f, 3 by Dansili (GB) |
With You | Scoop Dyga
By Tom Frary
Reverting to a mile after a gallant effort when a close-up fifth in the G1 Prix de Diane, George Strawbridge’s TDN Rising Star With You (GB) (Dansili {GB}) justified 8-5 favouritism with authority in Sunday’s G1 Prix Rothschild at Deauville. Perfectly placed from the outset by Aurelien Lemaitre, the homebred tracked the pace-setting Crown Walk (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in second with stamina assured over this trip. Gaining the edge over that rival approaching the furlong pole, the bay drew away to score by three lengths from Godolphin’s duo of Crown Walk and Rosa Imperial (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) who were separated by a head. “She’s top-class and has never run a bad race in her life,” trainer Freddy Head commented. “She can adapt to whatever track, but I was worried about the ground when the rain fell today. Obviously that was not a problem and while I have to discuss it with the owner, she could come back here for the [Aug. 12 G1 Prix Jacques le] Marois.”
With You, who earned Rising Star status when off the mark by six lengths over this trip on debut on testing ground at Saint-Cloud in September, had made light of her first serious test in the G3 Prix des Reservoirs also at that distance on a similarly holding surface on the round course here in October. When she reappeared in ParisLongchamp’s G1 Prix Saint-Alary over a mile and a quarter May 27, she had the formidable Laurens (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) to contend with and came out second best for the first time by only a short head before the extra half furlong of the June 17 Chantilly Classic proved perhaps a touch too far. Beaten just a neck, two noses and a head in a blanket there as Laurens prevailed again, With You had the advantage of stamina over these mainly miling specialists and with that in mind Lemaitre had a strangehold on the race from the first few yards. Only the G3 Prix Chloe winner Crown Walk offered any concern at any stage, especially as that leader was enjoying what looked like an advantageous strip of ground on the stand’s rail, but in the end class prevailed as well as staying power.
The runner-up’s trainer Henri-Alex Pantall said, “She ran a lovely race and is obviously better at a mile, even though she won last time over nine. She also likes soft ground and is very courageous, so I have to be proud.” Godolphin’s Lisa-Jane Graffard added, “Both the Godolphin runners have performed very well–there are no excuses. This was Crown Walk’s best run and confirms that she is best over a mile. She is a very progressive filly and we hope she can go on and win a group 1. Rosa Imperial possibly lacked a bit of stamina towards the end and we will discuss with Andre [Fabre] what trip to run her over next time.”
With You is now the second top-level winner for the G3 Prix de Flore scorer In Clover (GB) (Inchinor {GB}) after her Prix de l’Opera-winning full-sister We Are (Ire). Also responsible for the listed-winning pair Dream Clover (GB) and Incahoots (GB) by Oasis Dream (GB), the dam is a daughter of the G3 Prix de Royaumont scorer Bellarida (Fr) (Bellypha {Ire}) who also produced the listed scorer and G3 Prix de la Nonette runner-up Bayourida (Slew O’Gold) and the fellow listed-winning Bellona (Ire) (Bering {GB}). The latter later threw Es Que (GB) from a mating with In Clover’s sire Inchinor and she in turn boasts four black-type winners headed by the G1 Hong Kong Vase scorer Dominant (Ire) (Cacique {Ire}) and the G2 Lennox S.-winning first-season sire Es Que Love (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}). In Clover also has an as-yet unnamed yearling full-brother to With You and a 2018 colt by Dubawi (Ire).

By Tom Frary
Bolstered by a nine-length success in a novice auction stakes at Beverley June 26, the already well-journeyed Victory Command made all on his black-type bow to provide War Command with a first winner in that sphere. Sent straight to the front by Silvestre De Sousa, the bay was soon clear and benefitted from the unquantifiable magic that rider conjures up in that position to hand a comprehensive beating to Glorious Lover. “As soon as they get rated above 90 you have got to look at black-type,” Charlie Johnston, assistant to father Mark, explained. “At the five-day stage it looked pretty deep, but it started to cut up. He has done nothing but surprise since day one. He is entered next week in a nursery at Goodwood. I would not rule that out.”
Victory Command is the second black-type winner for Aguinaga (Ire) (Machiavellian) after the G2 Gimcrack S. and G3 Bengough Memorial S. winner Conquest (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). The dam is a half to the G1 Haydock Park Sprint hero Iktamal (Danzig Connection), the MGSW First Magnitude (Ire) (Arazi) and the GII Arkansas Derby scorer Rockamundo (Key To the Mint). Poet’s Word Prevails In King George Thriller

Poet’s Word edges Crystal Ocean in King George thriller | racingfotos.com
By Tom Frary
If there were any doubts that his defeat of Cracksman (GB) (Frankel {GB}) was an aberration in the Royal meeting’s G1 Prince of Wales’s S., Saeed Suhail’s Poet’s Word (Ire) (Poet’s Voice {GB}) quashed them on Saturday as he mastered his rock-hard stablemate Crystal Ocean (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in an epic encounter. Ever since Royal Ascot had passed, this renewal had looked between the Freemason Lodge pair who are equally the manifestation of Sir Michael Stoute’s training method and with Cracksman and Kew Gardens (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) absent this became a truly two-horse affair. As William Buick set the 6-4 favourite Crystal Ocean alight two out, man-of-the-moment James Doyle was delivering Poet’s Word with perfect poise from behind and the 7-4 second favourite ranged alongside a furlong out. Neither of the yard’s duo were prepared to give an inch close home as they raced for the bragging rights but Poet’s Word proved just the stronger by a neck, with the solid yardstick Coronet (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) a healthy nine lengths behind in third. “They are two wonderful brave athletes and my first reaction is to feel sorry for the runner-up,” Stoute commented after a crowning moment of his distinguished career which now features the outright record of six winners in this prestigious showcase. “They are a joy to train–they are two admirable, honest and sound competitors and there is nothing between them really. A big team effort served that up.”
Providing Stoute with the Royal Ascot record last time, Poet’s Word was in many ways the perfect specimen to hand his trainer another landmark here. His official BHA ratings have climbed as his career has progressed, with no blips, and his trajectory has an unflinching upward progress to it. Decades of handling these type of thoroughbreds meant that Stoute had the sense to take it steady at two and three and when he was fourth in the 10-furlong handicap on the Epsom Derby undercard that the stable had previously won with Conduit (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}) it was time to lower sights for the time being. Poet’s Word responded with a win in a similar event at Glorious Goodwood and an even better second at Doncaster in September before picking up the thread seamlessly on his 4-year-old bow at Chelmsford last April.
Chester’s May meeting was chosen as the black-type debut for Poet’s Word and he proved up to the task when a neck second to Deauville (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G3 Huxley S. at 10 furlongs before earning the laurels in the 12-furlong G3 Glorious S. on deep ground back at Glorious Goodwood in August. Jumping into group 1 company when a half-length second to Decorated Knight (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 Irish Champion S. at Leopardstown the following month, he tried his hardest next time but could not live with Cracksman as he trailed seven lengths behind in second in the G1 Champion S. here. Sixth in the G1 Hong Kong Cup at Sha Tin Dec. 10 and second to Hawkbill (Kitten’s Joy) in the Mar. 31 G1 Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan, he returned to Europe to annexe the G3 Brigadier Gerard S. at Sandown May 24 and arrived for the Prince of Wales’s with solid claims without being considered in the same vicinity of Cracksman. While the immediate tendency was to put his dramatic reversal of the Champion form there down to fast ground and the indifference of the Oppenheimer homebred, thinking time and reflection allowed the Stoute representative greater credit especially after Hawkbill ran so close in the Eclipse having been 10 1/4 lengths behind at Royal Ascot.
With Rostropovich (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) taking front-running duties off Salouen (Ire) (Canford Cliffs {Ire}), the pace was unflinching which allowed the Stoute runners to draft and conserve energy for their inevitable scrap. Crystal Ocean committed first straightening for home and for a few strides that looked a winning move given how well he stayed in last year’s St Leger and Doyle was still over two lengths adrift. The Rothschild homebred had the rail to help as he attempted to give his stablemate the slip, but Poet’s Word was unleashing his devastating late surge and he ran straight and true in a pursuit that only had one outcome. “He is so versatile and such a genuine warrior–everything he does is very focused,” Doyle said. “He switched off very well and they went a hell of a pace today–they were flying down the hill and I had to be patient. I ended up following Coronet, which wasn’t really the plan, as I wanted to be in front of her and if I had been I think I would have won a bit easier. She dropped off bit on the home turn, which was frustrating as Crystal Ocean got first run on me and I left him with a bit of a task. I had to be brave and attack late and he’s helped me out. Sir Michael said to keep it smooth and he’s a real star.”
Poet’s Word, who becomes the first 5-year-old to win this since Daylami (Ire) in 1999, is out of the listed-placed Woodcote Stud homebred Whirly Bird (GB) (Nashwan) who also produced the G3 Thoroughbred S. and G3 Prestige S. scorer Malabar (GB) (Raven’s Pass). Her first foal Whirly Dancer (GB) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) was responsible for last year’s G2 Railway S. winner and G1 Goffs Vincent O’Brien National S. and G1 Phoenix S.-placed Beckford (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), while her own dam Inchyre (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}) was a reliable source of middle-distance talent. The third dam Inchmurrin (Ire) (Lomond) ironically emanates from one of Sir Philip Oppenheimer’s best families, with the MGSW sire Inchinor (GB) (Ahonoora {GB}) her finest progeny while other notables to feature in the pedigree are Miss Keller (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), Venus de Milo (Ire) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}) and the G1 St Leger hero Harbour Law (GB) (Lawman {Fr}). Whirly Bird’s 2-year-old filly by Kingman (GB) named Incharge (GB) was bought for 200,000gns by Stroud Coleman Bloodstock and Brightwalton Stud at Tattersalls October. She also produced a colt by the same sire this year.

Godolphin’s Beyond Reason (Ire) (Australia {GB}) brought gold-standard Royal Ascot form to Saturday’s G3 Prix Six Perfections at Deauville and it proved enough as she emerged with the month-long festival’s first black-type prize after a tense finish which forced a photo. Fourth in the June 23 Listed Chesham S., the bay raced under cover early tracking the pace set by TDN Rising Star Spirit of Brittany (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Roused into action in early straight by Tony Piccone, the 7-1 shot wore down the even-money favourite passing the furlong pole and held on grimly as Devant (Fr)(Showcasing {GB}) closed with every stride. At the line, there was a nose between them, with Spirit of Brittany shaping as a possible non-stayer two lengths away in third. “She’s a nice filly and has been straightforward to train ever since she came into the yard,” Charlie Appleby said. “We were delighted with her last race at Ascot, where William [Buick] said he came too soon on her. At that level, she probably didn’t quite see out the seven-furlong trip so we told Tony [Piccone] to wait today and come with a late run. He did that perfectly. It’s a little too early for her to go further than seven–we’ll give her time to get stronger and more mature and maybe come back for the [G3] Prix d’Aumale [at ParisLongchamp Sept. 9] as a prep for the [Oct. 7 G1 Prix] Marcel Boussac.”
Beyond Reason, who becomes the first black-type winner for her sire, is a daughter of the GIII Gallorette H. scorer No Explaining (Ire) (Azanour {Ire}). She is a granddaughter of Clare Bridge (Little Current) who captured the GIII Gilltown S. before throwing the GII American H. winner and GI Eddie Read H. runner-up Bayamo (Ire) (Valanour {Ire}) and the G3 Benazet-Rennen winner Wessam Prince (GB) (Soviet Star). Also from the family of the G1 Coronation Cup and G1 St Leger hero Silver Patriarch (Ire) (Saddlers’ Hall {Ire}) and the G1 Grand Criterium-winning sire Wootton Bassett (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}), No Explaining has a yearling colt by Gleneagles (Ire).
