Lloyd Williams believes Joseph O’Brien will emulate his father and become the greatest trainer in the world after sending out Rekindling to lead home an Irish one-two-three in the Emirates Melbourne Cup at Flemington.
O’Brien will not get the chance to brag about many things his father didn’t do, but he beat him to the world’s richest handicap and, at 24 years of age, became the youngest ever winning trainer in the race.
And, in one of the most compelling chapters in the race’s 157-year history, all of those remarkable feats were achieved at the expense of his father, Aidan, as Johannes Vermeer finished second. Max Dynamite, runner-up in 2015, took third.
“I have been telling anyone who will listen to me that Joseph will be the leading trainer in the world in years to come. His father needs to watch out,” said winning owner Williams after the race. “You have just seen the start of an amazing career kick off right here in Melbourne. He is an absolutely extraordinary young man and this is an amazing achievement.”
Rekindling won the Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown on the second Sunday in April. This was his his seventh start of the season. He is only a three-year-old and endured some bruising battles in the Derby and the St Leger. To win the Melbourne Cup at the end of such a gruelling campaign is a remarkable training achievement by O’Brien but he deflected the praise onto the horse.
“I can’t quite believe it. This is unbelievable. He is a tough horse and he is very easy to train. We have to do very little with him so he deserves all the credit. He is a tremendous horse,” said a visibly-shocked O’Brien after the race.
“He had a very light weight and he had a lovely draw. It is not often in a big race that things go so well but the whole way through the race I was delighted. I could not have been any happier at any stage and I am just so, so pleased that it all worked out.”
Rekindling is the youngest horse to win the race since 1941. Jockey Corey Brown, 17 years older than the trainer, was enjoying a second success after partnering Shocking to victory in 2009.
Aidan O’Brien looked like ending his Melbourne Cup hoodoo 100 metres from home as Johannes Vermeer swept to the front but Rekindling had too much staying power and reeled him to score by just over a neck.
How was Aidan feeling? Gutted? Dejected? Not even remotely. He was even happier than he would have been if Johannes Vermeer had held on.
“It is absolutely marvellous and I could not be any happier. It is the perfect result,” he told the Racing Post. “I was hoping and praying that I would finish second all the way up the home straight and I was just delighted that was the way it turned out.”
Aidan O’Brien watched the race in the comfort of his sitting room with his wife Anne-Marie and other three children who were all very much in the Joseph corner.
“All I know is that there was a lot of cheering and roaring for Joseph. We now know who the most popular member of the family is! I am just delighted for him. He works hard and it is a very proud day.
“Johannes Vermeer has run a terrific race once again and I am delighted with him but he was just beaten by a better horse on the way. It is absolutely marvellous.”
Max Dynamite, second two years ago, was placed again for Willie Mullins two and a half lengths away, with another two and three quarter lengths to Big Duke, the best home-trained runner.
Nakeeta was fifth for Iain Jardine, ahead of Thomas Hobson who was partnered by 18-year-old Ben Allen after Joao Moreira was injured earlier on the card.
The winner also became a sixth in the race for owner Lloyd Williams, who along with his partners also had Almandin in last year’s race.
Mullins said of the third-placed Max Dynamite: “I was delighted with him. There was a point up the straight where I thought he might get out and do it, but I think age just caught up with him in the end.”
This year at least, it paid to have youth on your side in the Melbourne Cup.

Rekindling Takes The Melbourne Cup

The Joseph O’Brien-trained Rekindling (GB) (High Chaparral {Ire}) led home an Irish-trained trifecta in the 157th running of the A$6.2 million G1 Emirates Melbourne Cup, beating Johannes Vermeer (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), representing the trainer’s father Aidan O’Brien, by half a length.
With three kilos in hand over the runner-up, Rekindling became the first 3-year-old winner of the Cup since 1941. The first two home both raced in the colours of Lloyd Williams to give the owner a sixth win in the Cup and second in a row following last year’s triumph Of Almandin (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), who finished twelfth. It was also a second win in the Melbourne Cup for Rekindling’s jockey Corey Brown.
A momentous result for Ireland was completed when Max Dynamite (Fr) (Great Journey {JPN}), who was second in the race two years ago, finished three lengths back from the leading duo in third under Zac Purton.
Big Duke (Ire) (Raven’s Pass) finished best of the local challengers for Victoria’s champion trainer Darren Weir, while the first Scottish-trained runner in the Cup, Nakeeta (GB) (Sixties Icon {GB}), was fifth. Six of the first seven horses to finish are trained in Europe.

Joseph Patrick O’Brien, a 24 anni, si è incanalato nel solco già creato da padre Aidan O’Brien ed ha cominciato a macinare risultati di altissimo profilo. Nella corsa “that stops a nation”, la Emirates Melbourne Cup G1 di martedì mattina da Flemington sui 3200 metri da $6,5 milioni, Giuseppino è riuscito a vincere presentando Rekindling (High Chaparral) al primo posto e negando a suo padre una corsa non ancora nel palmares di una leggenda chiamata Aidan, secondo con Johannes Vermeer(Galileo). Primo e secondo, entrambi per i colori Lloyd Williams, ma non solo. Il terzo arrivato è ancora un irlandese come Max Dynamite(Great Journey) presentato da Willy Mullins, terzo in questa corsa nel 2015, con un Zac Purton strepitoso in sella.
Gli allenatori migliori del mondo, secondo una convinzione secolare e tradizionale, sono quelli che presentano cavalli sulle lunghe distanze. In quel segmento ci si rende conto davvero di come si possa valorizzare un capitale umano ed equino di alto rango. E Joseph è riuscito a far vincere questa corsa ad un cavallo come Rekindling (High Chaparral) il quale nella stagione aveva steccato solo nel Derby. Avete capito bene, si tratta di un tre anni, ed anche questo è un piccolo record. Infatti mai prima d’ora un allenatore così giovane aveva vinto la Melbourne Cup mentre per trovare un vincitore di questa corsa a 3 anni dobbiamo tornare indietro fino al 1941. Capolavoro, maestria e talento unico quello degli irlandesi di forgiare campioni e di Joseph O’Brien di presentarlo così pronto all’appuntamento. Un altro capitolo d’oro in 157 anni di storia della corsa.
La corsa è vissuta con un ritmo regolare impostato da Cismontane (High Chaparral) che insieme a Gallante (Montjeu) ha dettato l’andatura, mentre Marmelo (Duke Of Marmalade) è rimasto vicino alla testa con al suo interno Ben Melham in sella a Johannes Vermeer e Corey Brown (17 anni più vecchio di Joseph e vincitore già di questa corsa nel 2009) a bordo di Rekindling che invece ha lasciato sfogare quelli in avanti posizionandosi a 3/4 di gruppo, vicino comunque a quelli a metà. Nella parte finale della curva opposta si è cominciato a rullare e piano piano sono emersi i veri valori con quelli davanti che calavano e quelli da dietro che si sono presentati freschi all’appuntamento. Il primo a passare è stato Johannes Vermeer che si è steso a quel punto verso il traguardo ma senza tenere conto della minaccia esterna arrivata proprio da Rekindling che ha cominciato a mulinare le gambe fino a raggiungere il compagno e superarlo nella fase finale, con mezza lunghezza di margine sul traguardo. Tutto questo mentre Max Dynamite, all’interno, cercava corsie utili a raccogliere il massimo possibile. Il vincitore aveva una quota di 14/1 e veniva, in termini di prestazione, da 6 corse in stagione. Aveva vinto al rientro le Ballysax G3 alla prima uscita per Joseph, dopo averlo ereditato dal training da David Wachman, poi successivamente un quarto posto nelle Dante Stakes G2, il 16° nel Derby G1, il primo nella Curragh Cup G2 e da li la convinzione potesse essere un cavallo da coppe. Secondo nell’Irish St Leger alle spalle di Order Of St George e ancora quarto ma a 2 lunghezze da Capri nel St Leger di Doncaster. Poi il viaggio, ed il volo.
Parole di rito quelle di Joseph, letteralmente sulla luna. A cui hanno fatto eco quelle di suo padre Aidan che ha visto la corsa con sua moglie Annemarie ed i suoi tre figli: “Quello che so è che sono felicissimo per Joseph, sappiamo ora chi è il membro più popolare della nostra famiglia! Sono un padre fierissimo, Joseph è un lavoratore indefesso.
Da segnalare gli altri: l’Ebor winner Nakeeta è arrivato magnificamente al quinto posto per Iain Jardine, davanti di una posizione rispetto a Thomas Hobson, montato dal 18enne Ben Allen in sostituzione di Joao Moreira infortunatosi prima della corsa. Olivier Peslier, alla prima Melbourne Cup, è giunto settimo su Tiberian mentre lo Hughie Morrison Marmelo nono, una posizione davanti a Wicklow Brave, il terzo partente di Willy Myllins. Il favorito Almandin, con Frankie Dettori in sella per i colori di Lloyd Williams, è giunto 12° mentre Hugo Palmer ed il suo Wall Of Fire 16°, con al 18° posto US Army Ranger sempre presentato da Joseph.
Rekindling è il sesto vincitore della corsa da $6 million (circa £3.5m/€4m) per la famiglia Williams, dopo quella dello scorso anno con Almandin. Per lui uno storico doppio.
