The 2017 Melbourne Cup is the richest and most sought after race on the Australian horse racing calendar. This year the Cup will be run on Tuesday November 7th.

Raced annually at the Flemington Races on the first Tuesday in November, the Melbourne Cup is final highlight in Melbourne’s thrilling Spring carnival of racing. A true staying test of 3200m the Melbourne Cup attracts international interest, with many overseas horses nominating for the race, for a chance to share in the millions of dollars of prize money.

Since the Melbourne Cups inception in 1877, the day has been a public holiday for those in Melbourne and Victoria, which has helped to swell public interest around the whole Spring Carnival. This was highlighted in the 1960’s when the Victorian racing Club decided to host Horse racing ‘fashion on the field’, in an attempt to attract women to the races. Needless to say the promotion was a success, with the fashion parades still taking place on Melbourne Cup day.

In recent times Makybe Diva has been the first horse to win 3 successive Melbourne Cups (2003, 2004, 2005); a feat which has seen her take her place as one of Australia’s finest ever gallopers. If Makybe Diva is the queen the Melbourne Cup, it would be fair to say that the mercurial trainer Bart Cummings if the King. This was highlighted a record 11th time in the 2008 Melbourne Cup, when he trained rank outsider Viewed to an unexpected victory.

COMMENT: A really hard horse to gauge. He ran third in the Cup last year and looked good during the Autumn. His Spring campaign hasn’t been that good although he was arguably campaigned more around the Cup this time. He definitely has the class and a win wouldn’t surprise but i don’t think he is going well enough to win.

COMMENT: Last years Melb Cup winners and was ultra impressive in his first two runs this preparation although last start in the Bart Cummings he was a bit flat. Happy to forgive that run and i think he is the best stayer we have here in Australia. Very hard to beat once again.

COMMENT: Nearly caused the upset of the decade in the Cox Plate last start when he nearly ran down Winx. I didn’t think he stayed all that well in the Caulfield Cup though so the 3200m is questionable imo. Happy to bet around him at the distance judging by his price.

COMMENT: A really interesting French galloper who has the form to win this race if he has travelled well. We haven’t seen him go around in Aus before and history suggests its hard to win the Melbourne Cup first up but i still think he is one of the better chances in the race at the price.

COMMENT: Had the International form to be right in Melbourne Cup contention and his first up run in the Caulfield Cup suggests he is going to be very hard to beat in the race. Has a very good turn of foot and has won at 3000m so he should stay the distance. The horse to beat.

COMMENT: Another one of the Internationals that i really like but like most of them we have not seen them go around before so its hard to gauge how he has travelled. On his overseas form he looks right in this race and he has last years Cup winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy on board so his judgement to ride this horse says a lot. Big danger.

COMMENT: Was the eye catcher of the day in the Herbert Power Stakes which saw him jump as the red hot favourite in the Caulfield Cup. He didn’t have much luck in the Caulfield Cup but still ran a very good race. He has a very good turn of foot although there is a query whether he can stay the distance as he has only won up to 2000m.

COMMENT: Bondi Beach i thought had a good chance leading into last years Melbourne Cup but could only manage 13th. His two runs since in Australia don’t suggest he is going well enough to win. Happy to leave out.

COMMENT: Ran a narrow second in the Cup two years ago but we didn’t see him last year. His runs since that Cup run overseas have been mixed but he dropped back in class and regained winning form last time out. I don’t think he is going as well as he was two years ago but horses often have the tendency to race well in certain races and he will stay the trip.

COMMENT: He was ticking along really nicely heading into the Caulfield Cup and i thought he would go very close but he was disappointing. If you take his Caulfield Cup run out then he looks like he would be right in this race. Happy to give him another chance so he should be included.

COMMENT: Ran in the Melbourne Cup last year and you could say he failed pretty badly finishing 22nd. Has been in good form overseas without really winning and his run in the Caulfield Cup wasn’t too bad despite finishing back in the field. Definitely has his claims and shouldn’t be at such long odds. Looks overs.

COMMENT: Has been racing well this preparation with his best run two starts ago where he won the St Leger Stakes impressively. Jumped as a short priced favourite in the Moonee Valley Cup and was just fair. Don’t really like the form he is coming through and at the price ill be happy to bet around him.

COMMENT: Has had his fair share of injury issues but seems to be over them showing he is in form by winning the Caulfield Cup last start at a big price. Should stay the distance and on his last start win he should be shorter so at the price he needs to be included in your multiples. Good e/w chance.

COMMENT: Has been racing in career best form of late and she continues to improve at every run. She was thrown in the deep end last start in the Caulfield Cup and she definitely held her own running second. There is a query if she can run the 3200m but all indicators say she will. Include.

Probably would have preferred some cut out of the track so if it rains he looks hard to beat but even on a dry track he should be right in the finish.

COMMENT: Was racing just okay then came out and beat a good field ultra impressively in the Bart Cummings two starts ago. She then put in just an okay run in the Caulfield Cup. Hard to gauge on her best she is right in it but her best seems to be few and far between.

COMMENT: Won the Lexus Stakes and that usually proves to be a good lead up race into the Melbourne Cup for horses to race well despite not winning often. I think it was one of the worst editions of the Lexus Stakes ive seen so ill be leaving him out.
