US Navy Flag spearheads four-pronged O’Brien attack in Dewhurst

Aidan O’Brien, who is inching ever-closer to Bobby Frankel’s record 25 top-level winners in a year, could launch a four-pronged attack on the Darley Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday.
Middle Park winner US Navy Flag appears likely to spearhead the challenge, and is set to be joined by Seahenge, successful in the Group 2 Champagne Stakes when last seen, while maiden winners Mendelssohn and Threeandfourpence are also being readied for the Group 1 highlight.
O’Brien, who has notched 23 Group 1s so far this year, said on Tuesday: “US Navy Flag is a very progressive horse. He’s a brother to Roly Poly and there are many similarities between the two.
“We always thought he worked like a nice horse but he was just a little bit slow to learn. We were happy with him in the Middle Park – he seems to have come out of that very well, and at the moment we’re contemplating running him on Saturday.”
O’Brien continued: “Seahenge could join him. He was very green the first day and was a bit green again at Goodwood, but he did it well in the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster, where Donnacha [O’Brien] gave him a lovely ride.”
Mendelssohn finished last of the seven runners behind Seahenge in the Champagne, but O’Brien has revealed the colt has been working much better in headgear since that disappointing display, and he is expecting an improved effort on Saturday.
He said: “Mendelssohn was behind Seahenge at Doncaster but Ryan [Moore] felt he banged himself a little.
“He’s a horse that’s learning and he has a good look around, but we worked him in blinkers during the week and they seemed to wake him up. There’s a possibility he’ll wear a pair of blinkers, or a visor, on Saturday.”
The trainer added: “Threeandfourpence won nicely at Fairyhouse and I spoke with [owner] Evie Stockwell this morning and the plan is for us to run him as well.”
Happily, successful in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Chantilly last time, has the option of the Dewhurst or bet365 Fillies’ Mile, and O’Brien and his team are leaning towards running in Friday’s Group 1, declarations for which are made on Wednesday morning.
O’Brien said: “Nothing is set in stone with regards our Fillies’ Mile entries. Happily has come out of her run in France very well. September and Magical could also run.
“When there’s not a lot of space between races we like to leave the decision as late as possible.”
He added: “There’s a chance that I Can Fly will run in the Group 3 Oh So Sharp Stakes on Friday, while we’re thinking about running Battle Of Jericho in the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes.”

Inghilterra: Sabato le #Darley #Dewhurst Stakes da Newmarket. Favorito Expert Eye con Andrea Atzeni a bordo..
Sabato 14 Ottobre in Inghilterra una giornata dedicata al futuro dei campioni. In particolare sono in programma le Darley Dewhurst Stakes G1 sui 7 furlongs, poi le Godolphin Flying Start Zetland Stakes sui 2000 metri per puledri promettenti in ottica distanza, le Masar Godolphin Autumn Stakes G3 sul miglio e le Darley Club Stakes G3 sui 1800 metri, unica corsa riservata agli anziani e con nomi interessantissimi.
Ma partiamo dalla prova regina del pomeriggio, le Dewhurst Stakes che negli ultimi anni sono state vinte da Churchill, War Command, Dawn Approach e prima ancora gente come Frankel, New Approach, Teofilo, Shamardal, Sir Percy, Mujahid, Zafonic, Dr Devious etc etc etc solo per citarne alcuni.
Al forfait di lunedì sono rimasti in 16 e tutti gli occhi sono puntati su Expert Eye (Acclamation), favorito a 4/6 in antepost, di proprietà Juddmonte ed allenato da Sir Michael Stoute che resta su due vittorie su 2, una di queste impressionando a Goodwood nelle Vintage Stakes G2 (VIDEO QUI dal minuto 23 circa), nella foto, con Andrea Atzeni in sella (vincitore di questa corsa in sella a Belardo), che lo accompagnerà anche in questa occasione. Il cavallo ha strabiliato tutti a Goodwood, pare che Ryan Moore non fosse contento di non poterlo montare più, ed è stato ritirato nelle National irlandesi per puntare a questa corsa. Ma l’aspetto curioso è rappresentato dal fatto che sia in training da Stoute, uno che di solito allena cavalli dai 3 anni in su e su distanze superiori al miglio….
Questo è invece un aspetto atipico di queste Dewhurst, per le quali è il caldo favorito. Da sottolineare che l’unica vittoria di Stoute in questa corsa è datata 1986 con Ajdal per Sheikh Mohammed. Quattro sono le vittorie per Juddmonte in questa corsa e sono Zafonic (1992) Xaar(1997), Distant Music (1999) e Frankel nel 2010.
Previste le partecipazioni di Verbal Dexterity (Vocalised) dall’Irlanda per Jim Bolger, che resta sulla vittoria nelle Vincent O’Brien National Stakes G1 del Curragh ma in una corsa dove mancava il favorito Gustav Klimt. Ma di questo cavallo si parla un gran bene. Sulle colonne irlandesi dell’Irish Times ne ha parlato diffusamente spiegando che si tratta di un cavallo che non ha nulla a che invidiare agli altri campioni dello stesso Bolger che hanno vinto questa corsa. Il trainer irlandese può annoverare 5 affermazioni in questa corsa e sono Teofilo (2006), New Approach (2007), Intense Focus (2008), poi Paris Hall (2011) e Dawn Approach (2012).
C’è molta attesa anche per Emaraaty (Dubawi e Zee Zee Top), puledro da £2,6 milioni, allenato da John Gosden per Hamdan Al Maktoum e sul quale ovviamente salirà Jim Crowley. Dopo un debutto con un quarto posto, si è isolato a Newbury con una bella prestazione. Ancora non definita una monta per Frankie Dettori che pensiamo alla fine la troverà.
Il Coolmore sarà ovviamente presente, con Aidan O’Brien che questa corsa l’ha vinta 5 volte con Rock Of Gibraltar, Beethoven, War Command, Air Force Blue e Churchill, che probabilmente getterà nella mischia Seahenge (Scat Daddy), la femmina Happily (Galileo) fresca vincitrice di Lagardere G1 ed è in discesa da 12/1 a 10/1, e poi ancora Us Navy Flag (War Front) reduce dalle Middle Park G1, invece in salita. Gli altri papabili sono Hey Gaman (New Approach) per James Tate, Cardsharp (Lonhro) per Mark Johnston, Nebo (Kodiac) per Charles Hills.

Da segnalare che molti di questi, ma con profilo più sfumato, sono iscritti anche nelle Autumn Stakes G3 sul miglio e nelle Zetland sul doppio chilometro, ma anche queste sono prove da osservare attentamente perchè di solito escono fuori cavalli discreti, soprattutto dalle Zetland come successo lo scorso anno per Coronet e qualche anno fa per Twice Over. Sempre sul Rowley Mile l’ultima corsa del pomeriggio saranno le Darley Club Stakes G3 per anziani dove ci sono iscritti cavalli che poi potrebbero venire a Capannelle a fare il Premio Roma GBI Racing G2 il 5 Novembre, ed uno di questi è il solito Robin Of Navan (American Post). Nella corsa è iscritto anche Dicton (Lawman), ma non è ancora confermata la sua presenza.
