Frontiersman & Hawkbill second & third in Coronation Cup

Frontiersman announced himself as a top middle-distance prospect with a fine staying-on second in the G1 Coronation Cup at Epsom Downs, UK, on Friday, June 2.

Hawkbill also ran an excellent race in the historic 12-furlong contest to take third as the Charlie Appleby-trained four-year-olds filled the places behind all-the-way winner Highland Reel.

Frontiersman (James Doyle), supplemented six days ago for the Coronation Cup after readily winning a Newmarket handicap on May 7, was held up in second last of the 10 runners as Hawkbill (William Buick) and Prize Money (Saeed bin Suroor/Olivier Peslier) disputed second early on.

Hawkbill, successful in the G1 Eclipse Stakes last year, moved up to go a clear second and pressed Highland Reel strongly for the lead approaching the two-furlong pole.

The front two duelled for the advantage until Highland Reel found more over a furlong from home, with Frontiersman running on strongly to take second with just over half a furlong to race.

Frontiersman continued to bear down on the leader, despite looking uneasy and wandering on the camber, to go down by a length and three quarters to Highland Reel, who prevailed in a fast 2m 33.34s on good ground.

Hawkbill kept on to finish three and a half lengths behind Frontiersman, with Prize Money fading to finish ninth.

Charlie Appleby was delighted with the performance of Frontiersman and Hawkbill, said: “I’m delighted with the pair of them. Frontiersman finishing second there was a big step-up from his handicap win at Newmarket on his latest start.

“His homework had been so good and he has a pedigree to die for this horse. I’m not saying that makes him a great racehorse but he showed us all the right signs at home and he is a typical Dubawi who is getting better with age.

“We weren’t coming in here confident but we paid the £25,000 supplementary fee for a reason as we thought he deserved to have a crack at it.

“James [Doyle, jockey] thought his inexperience has just caught him out round there. We did ask James to just give him a chance round here as we knew the pace was going to be generous up front.

“He saw it out well and he galloped it out strongly. We might look at the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot with him as that looks the most logical step forward and he will justifiably deserve to be there in the line-up. All being well, he comes out of this fit and well and we will then head to Royal Ascot.”

“I was delighted with Hawkbill’s run and I’m not going to keep boring people with the same story, but he needs soft ground.

“It wouldn’t worry me coming back in trip either and William [Buick, jockey] said he’s got a gear there but the winner [Highland Reel] is a good horse. William said he went to go and have a battle with the winner and he found again.

“What this horse does do is quicken on soft ground and that catches a few of the others out, he can’t do the same on this ground.”

James Doyle, jockey, said of Frontiersman: “I am really pleased with him, he has run a cracker, though it was all a little bit much for him.

“A step up from handicap company to that. He is pretty good.

“I think possibly the Hardwicke would be the raced for him at Royal Ascot.”

William Buick commented: “Hawkill is better with a bit more juice in the ground. He is third in a Coronation Cup so this was a good effort.

“We had a bit of a battle and I thought we had the run of it. But we were never far away.”

Frankie holds tight as Enable storms to sodden Classic triumph

Enable: won the Oaks by five lengths from Rhododendron
Enable: won the Oaks by five lengths from Rhododendron,   Alan Crowhurst

By Lee Mottershead,

In the moments leading up the Investec Oaks the elements ensured a mighty big bang was heard across Epsom racecourse. Come the Classic itself, a new superstar of the sport made an equally big bang as Enable forged clear of odds-on favourite Rhododendron to triumph for British Flat racing’s dream team.

As torrential rain poured down and racegoers fled for cover, two exquisitely-bred and enormously talented fillies fought out a gripping duel down the home straight that ended in Khalid Abdullah’s latest homebred champion forging clear of Rhododendron.

There can have been few wetter Oaks but also none faster, as Enable stopped the clock in a race record time that gave Frankie Dettori his fourth success in the coveted prize, 23 years after his first, and John Gosden his second.

Enable, sent off 6-1 second favourite behind 1,000 Guineas second Rhododendron, ridden by Ryan Moore, came to Epsom via a convincing Chester defeat of the 8-11 hotpot’s stable companion Alluringly.

That opponent again ran admirably in third, albeit a yawning 11 lengths behind a five-length winner whose performance established her as both a powerful stayer and a middle-distance athlete of the highest order.

The trademark flying Dettori dismount was witnessed, but during the race he had been holding tight, unlike Olivier Peslier, who bailed out from America’s Daddys Lil Darling, fearful of a gruesome collision with the starting stalls after she set off like a scalded cat amidst thunder and lightning.

“It wasn’t nice out there,” said Dettori. “Horses get scared. You heard the bang – I got scared! When it rains so quickly the visibility becomes very bad and the reins start slipping. You try to be extra cautious and give yourself an extra yard.

“At the back of my mind I knew I had a great chance and I knew there was a question mark about Rhododendron’s stamina. I knew my filly would get to the line. When I saw Ryan not moving, I thought, ‘Oh God, I’m in trouble!’ Then once I saw the distress signals coming out from her, I knew my filly would stay right to the end.

“In the last furlong, the conditions were so bad I daren’t take my hands off the reins to celebrate. I thought just get the job done and celebrate afterwards. She has put up a very good performance – and I think she will get better and better.”

Should Enable do that, the second half of her season will be thrilling to watch, as was this Oaks, given the manner in which the winner and second locked together from the top of the home straight.

Yet inside the final furlong Rhododendron’s stamina ebbed away, leaving Gosden to celebrate a special moment for his yard’s King George and Eclipse hero Nathaniel, from whose first crop Enable hails.

On his debut and swansong Nathaniel was beaten by Frankel, but in the race to sire a British Classic winner, Nathaniel – or “good old Nathaniel”, as Gosden called him – has struck first.

“The first and second are two magnificent fillies who fought all the way down the straight,” said Gosden, who also saw Coronet finish fifth.

“Ryan and Frankie are good mates who knew they had the two best fillies. Ryan had told me he was very impressed with our filly when she beat him at Chester. Going over to France the other day for the Saint-Alary, he said, ‘Boy, she quickened and then quickened again.’ It is not often Ryan compliments someone else’s horse. He is quite tight with that sort of thing.”

Gosden added: “After Chester I felt she was as good as I’ve had since Taghrooda. She’s in that class. I said coming down today we would have to turn over a brilliant filly. I said there was a chance we might – and we have.”

Taghrooda, the heroine here in 2014, went on to claim the King George. When such a target was suggested for Enable, the man with five runners in the Derby seemed rather taken aback.

“Jeez, that would be bold,” said Gosden. “I’ll have a word with her. She’ll tell me what to do. Horses always tell you if you watch and listen.

“There are races like the Irish Oaks and King George. There are no plans, though. We’ll discuss it with Prince Khalid. He has a strong opinion on everything.”

The prince’s representative on the Downs, Teddy Grimthorpe, described Enable’s display as “utterly brilliant”. Indeed it was.

“That was a proper Oaks, a real Oaks,” said Gosden. “I thought with the drama beforehand and then the flash of lightning, it was all a bit Hollywood.”

Like any great Hollywood production, it had a marvellous leading lady.

Nathaniel’s Enable Storms To Oaks Success

Run in a torrent, Epsom’s G1 Investec Oaks was as electric as the stormy atmosphere on Friday as Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) drew the sting from Rhododendron (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) to secure an emphatic five-length success in race-record time. Having demonstrated abundant stamina and the dash of speed required to win around Chester when capturing the May 10 Listed Cheshire Oaks, Khalid Abdullah’s homebred turned back the 8-11 favourite and turned the screw as she stretched further clear as the market leader faded. “When I saw Ryan not moving I thought I was in trouble, but then he sent out distress signals and I knew my filly would stay and she pulled right away in the last furlong and a half,” jockey Frankie Dettori commented of the 6-1 joint-second favourite, who was a total of 11 lengths ahead of the third Alluringly (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) at the line. “She has only run three times before this and is still a frame, so she will get better and better. She is very genuine and honest and very easy to be around, so I’ve got to put her up there with some of the best. She surprised me at Chester and again today and I was impressed not just with the way she stayed but with her battling qualities.”

By the time Rhododendron was winning the G1 Fillies’ Mile, Enable had yet to see the racecourse and it is a measure of how far she has come that she did not even start favourite for her winning debut over a mile on Newcastle’s Tapeta at the end of November. Next seen finishing third behind her much-vaunted stablemate Shutter Speed (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and the G1 Racing Post Trophy fourth Raheen House (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in the same 10-furlong conditions race at Newbury Apr. 2 which was used by previous Oaks heroine Light Shift (Kingmambo), she was underestimated for the last time when the 2-1 second favourite behind Alluringly lining up for the Cheshire Oaks. Resoundingly taking that well-supported rival’s measure over an extended 11-furlong trip that brought her class into play, the bay was a valid underdog despite most of the major money continuing to force down Rhododendron’s odds as the race neared.

Epsom is always an arena of drama, but the lead-up to this card was particularly one to fray the nerves as huge thunderclouds drew nearer as post time approached. It may have been the impending storm that set off the American raider Daddys Lil Darling (Scat Daddy), who bolted on the way to the start and with Olivier Peslier unable to restrain her he exited the side door, she was caught and withdrawn. The next twist came when a clap of thunder saw Pocketfullofdreams (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) spook and lose Donnacha O’Brien behind the stalls and when the fillies were eventually housed and released the downpour duly came to add further theatricality to proceedings.

Pocketfullofdreams was quickly forced past the other joint-second favourite Sobetsu (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) to set an exacting pace and Ryan Moore opted to sit behind the enthusiastic Enable on the smooth-travelling Rhododendron as they ran third and fourth out of any trouble. Frankie pulled the eventual winner around Sobetsu in early straight and with that maneouvre was placed in front before the two-furlong pole, but the favourite was instantly alongside and putting on the pressure. While the Ballydoyle runner would arguably have done enough by the furlong marker to win several Oaks, she could not live with Enable once the imposing Juddmonte representative really began to roll and eat up the ground to run the race faster than any other in history.

For Frankie Dettori it was a fourth edition, while John Gosden was winning for the second time in four years. He still has the same owner’s Shutter Speed at home and that unbeaten G1 Prix de Diane-bound filly may not even be the best in his stable by now. “We knew there’d be a strong pace, but I didn’t think it would be quite that strong,” the master of Clarehaven said. “I thought the clever thing from Frankie was when Ryan tried to keep us in behind Sobetsu he was aware of it. On a plane to France recently Ryan told me he was very impressed with the way ours had quickened at Chester. He said he thought he had her [on Alluringly] and I put a lot of weight on that because Ryan is quite tight with praise normally. It was an epic battle and I thought the other filly had us, but in the last furlong she really dominated. Frankie and Ryan are two exceptional jockeys, pound-for-pound the two best I’ve ever put on a horse, and they were on exceptional fillies.” Gosden also handled Nathaniel, who to the surprise of some has managed to upstage his great rival Frankel (GB) by gaining a Classic winner and made this particular success even sweeter for his trainer. “It is great for him. He was a proper Galileo and this was a proper test in driving rain,” he added. “She is a very big girl of massive stature and we can dream of the future. I don’t see the point in taking her back to a mile and a quarter and so it’s got to be a mile and a half for her. I’m taking it one step at a time, but there are some lovely races like the [G1] Irish Oaks [at The Curragh July 15].”

It is not often that Aidan O’Brien is on the receiving end of a drubbing and he was taking it on the chin as pondered the solid effort of Rhododendron. “I thought she ran very well, everything went lovely and she ran a good race,” he said. “He [Ryan Moore] didn’t use the rain as an excuse, he just felt the last furlong seemed like a long furlong. Whether the trip was far enough or because she’d had a very busy day, she still ran very well though. I suppose she wouldn’t mind going back in trip.”

Enable’s dam, the Listed Prix Charles Laffitte winner and G3 Prix de Flore runner-up Concentric, is also responsible for the G2 Prix de Pomone and G3 Prix Allez France third Contribution. She is one of five black-type performers produced by the G3 Prix de Royaumont winner Apogee alongside sire Apsis (GB) and the G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Dance Routine (GB) (Sadler’s Wells), whose progeny feature the champion Flintshire (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and the G2 Prix Kergolay third Dance Moves (GB) (Dansili {GB}). Apogee’s Listed Prix Joubert winner Space Quest (GB) (Rainbow Quest) is in turn the dam of the G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris runner-up Kocab (GB) (Unfuwain), another of a stream of classy middle-distance performers in the family along with the G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly scorer and G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud runner-up Daring Miss (GB) (Sadler’s Wells), the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud-winning sire Spanish Moon and G2 Ribblesdale S. scorer Spanish Sun (El Prado {Ire}). Concentric, whose third dam Bourbon Girl was runner-up in this Classic 30 years ago, has a 2-year-old colt by Dansili (GB) named Centroid (GB), a yearling filly also by that sire and a filly foal by Frankel (GB).

VENERDÌ 2 GIUGNO 2017. #Epsom: #Enable a tempo di record nelle #Oaks! Battuta #Rhododendron.

Galileo’s Highland Reel Gets To Epsom In Time For Cup Glory

Highland Reel wins the Coronation Cup | Racing Post

By Tom Frary

Delayed on his journey over to Epsom, Highland Reel landed in the nick of time and what would have proved an ordeal for a lesser horse was shrugged off by last year’s G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. and GI Breeders’ Cup Turf winner who provided Aidan O’Brien with an eighth renewal of this prestigious event. Last seen putting in a rare below-par effort when last of seven in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan Mar. 25, the bay was customarily hot in the preliminaries but enjoyed a relatively easy time at the head of affairs in the race with Ryan Moore sitting pretty. It was Hawkbill who threw down the first challenge in the straight and for a handful of strides they were toe-to-toe, but the Ballydoyle raider started to see him off passing the two-furlong pole. A bigger threat was emerging from behind from that rival’s stablemate Frontiersman and that son of Ouija Board (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) had serious momentum as the line neared. However, Highland Reel had the advantage and the Godolphin representative who was supplemented this week hung down the camber towards the rail and his winning chance went astray. “He obviously went through a lot and things weren’t running smoothly this morning, but it’s been a big team effort and I can’t thank them all enough,” Aidan O’Brien said. “He’s an amazing horse, so tough and he has speed and stays.”

Highland Reel is one of the new generation of middle-distance performers able to play on the main stage both in Europe and further afield, as evidenced in all-the-way demonstrations of power under Seamie Heffernan in both the 2015 GI Secretariat S. and in the BC Turf at Santa Anita in November and under Moore in the King George last July. Also the winner of the 2015 G1 Hong Kong Vase and caught close home by Satono Crown (Jpn) (Marju {Ire}) in that event last year, he even managed a second to Found (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the Arc and to a Postponed (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) at a peak in the G1 Juddmonte International S. at York in August. Last year he was second in the G2 Hardwicke S. at Royal Ascot before his King George win and he may go back there again for that June 24 stepping stone. “He has the option of the Hardwicke at Royal Ascot and then on to the [July 29] King George, but I suppose we’ll see how he comes out of this and see whether he goes to the Hardwicke or straight for the King George,” O’Brien added.

Charlie Appleby may have been on the losing end, but he had much to take out of the race particularly with the unexposed and beautifully-bred Frontiersman who could look for revenge at the Royal meeting. “I’m delighted with the pair of them. Frontiersman was taking a big step up from a handicap, but his homework had been so good and he’s got a pedigree to die for, he’s a typical Dubawi and getting better with age,” he explained. “We were not coming here confident, but we paid £25,000 to supplement for a reason as we wanted to have a crack. James [Doyle] said his inexperience just caught him out, but he saw it out well and galloped to the line. We’ll look to something like the Hardwicke as the next stop with him. I was delighted with Hawkbill, too, but he loves soft ground. It would not worry me coming back in trip. William [Buick] said he’s got a gear, but the winner is a good horse. William went for a battle, but the winner found again. What he proved at Newbury was he can quicken on soft ground when others can’t. He’s done himself proud there.”

Hveger, who was placed in the G2 South Australian Oaks and G2 Schweppes Oaks, is also the dam of Idaho who was seventh here as he started his 2017 campaign bidding to make up lost ground on his brother. Her first foal was Valdemoro, runner-up in the G1 Crown VRC Oaks and G1 Vinery Stud Storm Queen S., while she has a 2-year-old filly and a yearling colt also by Galileo, with the former named Via Condotti (Ire). Her full-brother Elvstroem (Aus), or “Elvis”, registered five group 1 wins like Highland Reel including the Caulfield Cup and Victoria Derby, while her half-brother Haradasun (Aus) (Fusaichi Pegasus) collected the G1 Doncaster H., G1 George Ryder S. and the G1 Queen Anne S. at Royal Ascot. Descendants of their dam, the G1 Australian Oaks heroine Circles of Gold, include Ballydoyle’s high-class sprinter Starspangledbanner (Aus) and the G1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas heroine Amicus (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}).

Inghilterra: #Kaspersky buon secondo rendendo chili a Nottingham, in Classe 2. Solo settimo Poeta Diletto..

Turkey Cup, SLTC, CHIA Trophies Headline Day 1 Of Seoul International Weekend

by gyongmaman

It’s 60 years since South Korea and Turkey established diplomatic relations and to mark that, the Turkey Cup is one of three big races Day 1 on Saturday of the first of two International weekends at Seoul Racecourse this year (11 races from 10:45 to 18:00).

Turk

In additional to the Turkey Cup, there are also the annual exchange races with the Selangor Turf Club and China Horse Industry Association. English racecards are here. Here are notes on the four key races:

Race 7: Class 4 (1200M) “Cargill Agri Purina” / Handicap / KRW 60 Million / 15:35

1. CHARISMA QUEEN – Started to get the hang of this level in her latest two. Led last time but did fade to 5th.

2. TOUR ROSE – Since a 7th place on debut, she’s never been any worse than 2nd. Comprehensive class and distance winner last start, she’s very much the one to beat here.

3. SAEJAE SARANG – Surprise class and distance winner in February, he’s not shown many signs of following up in three efforts since.

4. DRAGON VILLAGE – Generally beats a few but generally finishes behind a few more. Outsider.

5. MAMBO CHEONHA – Comes in off three consecutive 6th place finishes and hasn’t achieved any better than that in six attempts at this class.

6. NEONEUN ACE – The main danger to the favourite, he enters off back to back 2nd place finishes. Runs best when on the early speed and another 2nd is more than possible.

7. JAMNYONG – Slightly disappointing 4th when well backed on May 7th. Generally runs on though and is in the placing frame here. Read more of this post

King Of Ace Makes It Four From Five

by gyongmaman

King Of Ace is one of the hottest properties in Korean racing right now and after his more than creditable 3rd place in last month’s Busan Ilbo Cup, he got back to winning ways in Friday’s feature at Busan.

King Of Ace [Malibu Moon - Cintarosa (Grand Slam)] was a $50,000 purchase from Fasig Tipton last November and didn’t debut until this February. He won his first three races with considerable ease, impressing to the extent that he was allowed to take his chance against some of the best sprinters in the country in the Busan Ilbo Cup, the first leg of the Sprint Series, on May 7th.

While Success Story and (just about) Seoul Bullet got the better of him that day, he beat a whole host of big names in running 3rd. Instead of going to the second leg of the Series, Sunday’s SBS Sprint in Seoul, King Of Ace was instead bumped up to 1800M for Friday’s class 2 Busan feature.

King Of Ace didn’t have it all his own way but was able to kick clear in the final furlong and hold off Triple Nine’s little sister Black Sapphire, to who he was giving 5kg away, by just under a length. He’s now won four from five.
