Royal Ascot: Dream win for Cox and Kirby

MY DREAM BOAT, 16-1 outsider of the six-strong field, ended the run of winning favourites at Royal Ascot on Wednesday and downed Japanese superstar A Shin Hikari who finished last.

In the process Clive Cox and Adam Kirby made it back-to-back Group 1 winners after striking with Profitable in the King’s Stand Stakes on Tuesday.
Paul and Clare Rooney, better known for their jumpers, were ecstatic after their first Group 1 winneron the Flat.
Favourite disappointing
A Shin Hikari made the running shadowed by Western Hymn with Kirby switching off My Dream Boat in last.
The writing was on the wall for the world’s top-rated racehorse as soon as Ryan Moore unleashed Breeders’ Cup winner Found inside the last two furlongs.
Kirby was finding room for My Dream Boat wider midtrack and his mount hung further left but answered all his calls to catch Found, who hugged the inside rail, in the last strides although Kirby admitted: “I wasn’t confident and was nervous waiting for the result it was so tight.
“He got a bit lonely out on his own but I was pretty confident I would be in the first three on his run two starts ago and the race went perfectly for me.”
That was not the case for odds-on A Shin Hikari, who weakened to finish last, and his owner Hirotsuqu Hirai reported: “The jockey said it was the first time A Shin Hikari had gone round a corner that sharp and it was a surprise for him.
“The horse is fine after the race. He is not upset, we are upset!”
Aidan O’Brien said of Found: “She ran a great race, I am delighted with her. She quickened very well but you are never home until they pass the post and he just came to get her, that’s racing. She will probably have a break now and come back for the autumn.”
Bookmakers reacted to My Dream Boat’s win by shortening him dramatically for the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown next month. He is now best-priced with 14-1 (from 25) with Boylesports.

Lady Aurelia stuns Ascot with Queen Mary romp

LADY AURELIA put up one of the most devastating displays seen in modern times at Royal Ascot when blitzing to seven-length win in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes.

The US raider did not see any of her 16 rivals when making all in the hands of Frankie Dettori to give Wesley Ward a third win in the 5f juvenile fillies feature.
Despite doubts about the draw and the ground, Lady Aurelia travelled strongly throughout and had the race in the bag even before kicking in the turbo at the furlong pole to streak away from French runner Al Johrah.
The success was the second in two days for Lady Aurelia’s sire Scat Daddy who was also responsible for Caravaggio, winner of the Group 2 Coventry Stakes.
Previously, the winner had scored by seven and half lengths on her debut on the dirt at Keeneland in April when she had also made the running.
Dettori said: “That was breathtaking from the top. To win by seven lengths at Royal Ascot was sensational and I’ve never seen or experienced anything like it especially for a two-year-old.”
He added: “I was going some very good splits but when I got to the furlong pole she found another gear it was unbelievable. “
Bookies were initially quoting Lady Aurelia for the Nunthorpe at York, the route taken by Ward’s Acapulco last year, but the trainer said afterwards that the Molecomb Stakes or the Prix Morny were more likely targets.
Usherette ran out a comfortable winner of the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes

Mickael Barzalona celebrated his first ever Royal Ascot win when 9-4 favourite Usherette ran away with the Group 2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes to give Godolphin their second winner on the day.
The four-year-old defied doubts about the ground to come from off a slow pace to give Andre Fabre a first win in the mile contest and his eighth Royal Ascot success in total.
Usherette was registering her second successive Group 2 victory on this side of the channel after her narrow success in the Dahlia Stakes at Newmarket last month.
The daughter of Shamardal never looking in any danger when striking for home over a furlong out to defeat 20-1 chance Furia Cruzada and Godolphin second string Always Smile.
The win was giving Sheikh Mohammed’s organisation their second win of the afternoon following the triumph of Ribchester in the opening Group 3 Jersey Stakes.
Andre Fabre talked up the winner afterwards. He said: “I have a lot of confidence in her ability but I was so worried about the ground. A racehorse has to be really good to go on any sort of ground so it was a question mark.
“I absolutely think she has won in spite of the ground so I was very impressed. As she had a penalty as well her performance was above what I was expecting.”
He added: “She is in the Falmouth if she recovers well she could go there.”
John Gosden, trainer of runner-up Furia Cruzada, said: “She ran a lovely race. She is just coming to herself, it takes a year after they come from South America. She will be better over a little further but I couldn’t be happier with her.”

Royal Ascot, day 2: My Dream Boat a sorpresa nelle Prince Of Wales’s Stakes G1, battuta Found. A picco A Shin Hikari. Nelle Queen Mary impressiona Lady Aurelia, Ribchester e Usherette dominano le Jersey e le Duke Of Cambridge
La sorpresa delle sorprese in giornata è arrivata quando meno ce lo aspettavamo, nelle Prince Of Wales’s Stakes G1 sui 2000 metri dove sembrava si dovesse solo ratificare la vittoria di A Shin Hikari (Deep Impact) dopo l’exploit nell’Ispahan G1, vinto per 10 lunghezze, tanto da guadagnarsi il titolo di miglior cavallo al mondo sul segmento. In realtà, l’Inghilterra ha riportato sulla terra un cavallo si forte, ma non così completo, tanto che ad Ascot è arrivato ultimo. La vittoria è andata a sorpresa a My Dream Boat (Lord Shanakill), una sorta di carneade di 4 anni apparso improvvisamente al centro della pista per fulminare il povero Ryan Moore in foto, al quale non ne va dritta una, in sella a Found (Galileo) la quale ad un certo punto sembrava padrona del suo destino. Invece, dall’esterno, ecco di nuovo la coppia Livio Cox-Adamo Kirky, quelli di Profitable nelle St James, fulminare sul palo la femmina Coolmore. My Dream Boat ha fatto perno sulla gran forma e la grande abilità su terreno soffice, vincendo a 16/1 quando la sua quota sarebbe potuto essere almeno di 33/1. Quarto il grigio Gatsby, rimasto sul passo, come Tryster (Shamardal) che non si è fatto andare bene il terreno nonostante una buona prestazione, che non gli ha permesso comunque di cambiare marcia ai 400. Ultimo, desolatamente, il cavallo forse più giocato dell’intero meeting. A Shin Hikari, quello che aveva sbagliato solo 2 volte in carriera (ora 3 su 13), si è presentato al tondino con 2 vistose fasce agli anteriori, con tono dimesso, esigenze fisiologiche espresse qua e la, non dando in sintesi l’impressione di essere il ritratto della salute. Mettiamoci poi la curva di Ascot diversa da quella francese, l’andatura diversa (qui Western Hymn non gli ha permesso di fare i propri comodi) ed una serie di sfortunati eventi che hanno fatto fare la figura del “bida” al Giapponese, con i nipponici fermi ad Agnes Word con il capitolo vittorie in terra d’Albione.
Spiegazioni ufficiali sono arrivate in tarda serata, con un entourage che ha parlato di un cavallo al quale è andato tutto storto. Masanori Sakaguchi ha parlato anche di un problema distanza, ma A Shin era del gatto già all’ingresso in retta. Peccato, perchè c’erano milioni di Giapponesi collegati via tv con l’Inghilterra. Testimonianze dirette, e ringraziamo Roberto Peroni per avercele fornite, hanno parlato di poco concorso di pubblico ad Ascot dei JAP. E qui torna l’eterna ossessione dei nipponici. A Parigi è tutta un’altra cornice. Poco importa loro di vincere ad Ascot, quello che inseguono maniacalmente è l’Arco. Tornando al vincitore: Si tratta di un cavallo non stupido, partito dal basso che per modo di correre non molla mai. Prodotto della fattrice Betty Burke (Choisir), è mezzo fratello di Compound (Art Connoisseur) che corre in Italia. My Dream è passato per le sabbie mobili degli handicap e le corse più basse, prima di salire in cima. Solo un anno fa aveva 76 di OR. Di proprietà di Paul e Clare Rooney, proprietari più che altri di cavalli in ostacoli, i quali da anni coltivano il sogno di vincere a Cheltenham, ma non ci sono mai riusciti. Ad Ascot, nel Royal Meeting, hanno vinto la corsa più ricca e forse più ambita. Incredibile come il Dio delle corse talvolta tolga, e talvolta distribuisca a piene mani la sua gloria. Ma forse, un dio non esiste. Esiste la cultura del lavoro, della fortuna ricercata, che quando incontra la professionalità crea una alchimia perfetta. Lo scorso anno Adamo Kirby era uno scemo. Quest’anno un eroe, dopo 2 vittorie in G1 in 2 giorni per Clive Cox, a poche ore dopo essere diventato padre. Incredibile. Il prossimo passo verso il cielo, secondo i bookmakers, sono le Coral-Eclipse G1 di Sandown dove lo sfangatore è stato proposto a 14/1, in discesa rispetto al 25/1.
Il titolo del giorno è tutto per Lady Aurelia (Scat Daddy), graduata OBS, che ha fatto stropicciare gli occhi nelle Queen Mary Stakes G2, aggiungendo un’altra perla alla collana di Scat Daddy (Johannesburg) al Royal Ascot. Dopo No Nay Never, Acapulco, Caravaggio ieri nelle Coventry, ecco uscire dal cappello americano una femmina incredibilmente forte la quale, presentata ancora da Wesley Ward, per i colori Stonestreet, e con Frankie Dettori in sella ha fatto il vuoto tra se e le avversarie. Dopo un debutto vittorioso a Keeneland per dispersione, si è presentata ad Ascot con forti credenziali ma con qualche dubbio sul terreno. Dubbio dissipato alla partenza dove la femmina ha prodotto una bella accelerazione per portarsi tra i primi e facendo selezione. Quando poi Lanfranco ha spinto il pulsantone del “Nos” questa se n’è andata per proprio conto infliggendo altre 7 lunghezze alla diretta inseguitrice qualeAl Johrah (Bated Breath) con al terzo Clem Fandango (Elzaam) e al quarto Kocollada (Kodiac) autrice di gran recupero, e da seguire per le prossime. Le altre, disperse. Per Frankie Dettori era la vittoria numero 54 del Meeting in assoluto, ad un passo da Wille Carson… anche perchè Lester Piggott è pressochè irraggiungibile. Per Wesley Ward è la terza vittoria nel contesto sui 1000 metri dopo Jealous Again (Trippi) nel 2009 ed Acapulco (Scat Daddy) lo scorso anno. I bookies, impressionati da questa performance, hanno subito quotato in cima all’antepost delle Nunthorpe la femmina, ma Wesley Ward si è affrettato a dire che gli obiettivi a lei riservati sono le Molecomb Stakes o il Prix Morny G1 contro i pari età. Un ulteriore boost alla forma delle 2000 Ghinee, l’ha dato Ribchester (Iffraaj) in apertura di convegno nelle Jersey Stakes G3 sui 1400, dove il cavallo di Godolphin (primo sigillo al Royal Ascot 2016) allenato da uno scatenato Richard Fahey (forma bestiale con i suoi pensionari), era stato incredibilmente abbandonato al betting ma è riuscito comunque a vincere mostrando netta superiorità. Acquistato da Sheikh Mohammed dopo le Gimrack dello scorso Agosto, ha vinto le Mill Reef G2, è stato fermo per la sosta invernale ed ha preparato la stagione Classica in maniera non fortunata. Secondo in Francia nel Prix Djebel, era stato retrocesso causa interferenza al quinto posto. Ma comunque ha dimostrato potenzialità interessanti nella Classica inglese, dove fu terzo di Galileo Gold. Qui ha battuto Thikriyaat (Azamour) con Forge(Dubawi), al terzo per una sorta di doppiettina, sul podio dei battuti, di Sir Michael Stoute. Nelle Duke Of Cambridge Stakes G2 (al seguito di William c’è stato il debutto al Royal Meeting di Kate Middleton) una bellissima impressione l’ha fattaUsherette (Shamardal) la quale sul miglio in pista dritta ha dato ragione a “Maitre” Andre Fabre, 8° centro ad Ascot, il quale aveva dichiarato alla stampa inglese tutta la sua fiducia nei confronti di una cavalla cresciutissima e che di fatto aveva sbagliato solo una corsa, tanto tempo fa. Mikael Barzalona, al primo centro “Royal”, ha posizionato la sua da favorita dietro al plotone dei primi, ma questa poi ha surclassato la compagnia nei confronti di Furia Cruzada (Newfoundland), campionessa in Argentina e capace di netto miglioramento dopo 2 prove di “ambientamento” nell’emisfero Nord agli ordini di John Gosden, e l’altra di Godolphin Always Smile (Cape Cross) al terzo. Per Godolphin era la seconda affermazione in giornata dopo Ribchester in apertura. Quanto ad Usherette, score semi illibato: Sette corse, 6 vittorie ed un NP ottenuto a Deauville nel Prix Rothschild G1 alle spalle di Amazing Maria. Poi nel 2016 4 su 4 partendo da 2 condizionate tra Chantilly e Deauville, poi la vittoria nelle Dahlia e l’alloro Reale. Obiettivo le Falmouth Stakes G1 di Newmarket l’8 Luglio prossimo. Da segnalare in giornata, la tripletta Godolphin con Portage (Teofilo) nella Royal Hunt Cup (VIDEO QUI) contro 27 avversari, e la doppietta di Frankie Dettori (55 vittorie nel meeting), in sella ad una scatenata Persuasive (Dark Angel) la quale ha vinto per John Gosden ed i colori del Cheveley Park la quarta corsa consecutive nel Sandrigham Handicap Lr.
