Ascot: Galileo Gold e Frankie trionfano nelle St James G1. Battuti sul tempo The Gurkha e Awtaad, quinto Emotionless

Poteva mancare Frankie all’appello? Manco per sbaglio. Dettori ha timbrato il cartellino ma non lo ha fatto in maniera ordinaria con un badge, anzi. Ha realizzato un piccolo capolavoro tattico vincendo le St James Palace’s Stakes G1 in sella a Galileo Gold (Paco Boy) e mettendosi in saccoccia uno come Ryan Moore. Senza nulla togliere al miglior fantino del mondo, Frankie non si è fatto infinocchiare ed ha vinto forse nell’unico modo possibile nei confronti di un cavallo forse superiore come The Gurkha (Galileo). Cioè seguendo da vicino Cymric, il battistrada che Godolphin aveva messo per Emotionless(Shamardal) poi arrivato quinto ma al rientro dall’infortunio post Dewhurst, ed ha anticipato lungo il percorso Awtaad (Cape Cross) il quale ha pensato più a disturbare The Gurkha che pensare a se. Ryan è caduto nella trappola rimanendo all’interno, poi cercando un disperato salvataggio venendo di fuori, ma quando ormai il Dj aveva messo l’ultimo disco tentando invano l’aggancio ma prendendo almeno il secondo. In un sol colpo il sauro si è ripreso la scena dopo le 2000 Ghinee dominate a Newmarket, e dopo una deludente esibizione al Curragh dove ha perso da quello di Keving Prendergast riprendendosi lo scettro nonostante gli scommettitori lo avesse completamente abbandonato, o quasi. Eppure i vincitori delle 2000 Ghinee sono sempre partiti da favoriti, a partire da Gleneagles, passando per Dawn Approach, Frankel, Henrythenavigator e Rock Of Gibraltar. Hugo Palmer era nervosissimo, ma poi ha avuto modo di rilassarsi annunciando al mondo, in una atmosfera festosa, che ha a disposizione il miglior 3 anni d’Europa ed il miglior fantino in circolazione. Come dargli torto. Per Frankie così fanno 53 vittorie al Royal Meeting. Ascot: #Profitable un fulmine nelle King’s Stand, battuto Cotai Glory. Al momento è il miglior millemetrista in Europa..

Profitable lo ha fatto ancora. Senza Acapulco (Scat Daddy) e gli altri ritirati a causa del terreno, il “new kid on the block” sul tema della velocità, cioè Profitable (Invincible Spirit), non solo ha regalato una giornata indimenticabile per Adamo Kirby che gli era in sella ma era diventato padre da un paio di ore. Ma già vincitore delle Palace House Stakes G3 e poi delle Temple Stakes G2 di Haydock qualche settimana fa, ha dato seguito di quella vittoria vincendo ancora e facendolo in G1 e dimostrando a quelli di Darley, che lo hanno acquistato in ottica stalloniera quando entrerà in razza, di aver fatto un ottimo affare. Cavallo forte, progressivo, con una ottima velocità di base e con gran cambio di marcia, si è presentato all’appoggio tutto in mano, sconquassando Mecca’s Angel che aveva già battuto ad Haydock, e tenendo botta su Cotai Glory (Exceed And Excel) arrivato secondo dopo un corsone e chance a 33/1, con Goken (Kendargent), che era a 50/1, al terzo. Il tempo finale è stato di 1m 2.69s (slow by 3.69s). Il cavallo allenato da Clive Cox aveva corso alla grande qui ad Ascot lo scorso anno quando era arrivato quinto nella Commonwealth Cup G1, ma avendo speso tanto in una corsa durissima quando aveva 3 anni, non aveva fatto bene nella seconda parte di stagione arrivando tra gli ultimi delle Nunthorpe G1 di York di Agosto, quinto nel Prix du Petit Couvert G3 a Longchamp, e poi si è fermato. Ma dopo riposo adeguato in questo 2016 non ha sbagliato un colpo vincendone 3 su 3, per ora. Primo a Newmarket in G3, primo ad Haydock in G2 e primo ad Ascot in G1. Un trittico simile a quello che realizzò Lochsong (Song) nel 1994 quando inanellò Palace House, Temple e King’s Stand nella stessa stagione. Cavallo da 1000 metri spaccati, affronterà comunque la July Cup G1 del 9 Luglio prossimo, ma l’estate sarà piena di appuntamenti del genere per uno veloce e dominante come lui. Ascot: #Caravaggio domina le Coventry per Coolmore impressionando. Battuto un discreto #Mehmas. Obiettivo le Phoenix.

Insieme a The Gurkha, è stato il cavallo più supportato al betting. Il 2 anniCaravaggio (Scat Daddy) è quello che ha maggiormente appagato l’occhio nel Day1 del Royal Ascot. Senza un vero e proprio riferimento, il figlio di Scat Daddy (Johannesburg) con in sella Ryan Moore didascalico, è emerso dal centro della pista mostrando una superiorità nettissima nei confronti dei pari età, rimanendo imbattuto in 3 uscite, regalando ad Aidan O’Brien l’8° vittoria nelle Coventry Stakes G2, la vittoria numero 49 al Royal Meeting per il Master di Ballydoyle, e restituito fiducia agli scommettitori che l’hanno appoggiato fino a 13/8 senza dimenticare che questa corsa l’hanno vinta anche No Nay Never ed Acapulco, altri due figli di Scat Daddy, prima di lui. Battuto Mehmas(Acclamation), il migliore dei “normali”, mentre al terzo è arrivato Psychedelic Funk (Choisir) che ha perso imbattibilità. Secondo Ryan Moore Caravaggio ha vinto 2 corse: Una contro se stessa e la tattica che era venuta male, ed un’altra contro i rivali. Attualmente Caravaggio è stato posizionato in cima all’antepost betting delle 2000 Ghinee G1 a 4/1, ma troppo acqua dovrà passare sotto i ponti, nonostante sia un cavallo che ha dato una bellissima impressione in una giornata dove non erano consentiti grossi recuperi dalle retrovie. E lui lo ha fatto.. Il Coolmoriano ha completato i 1200 metri in 1m 16.36s, altro tempo molto alto. Per Padre Aidan non ci sono problemi di tenuta in futuro ma ha commentato come sia uno che ha già maturato una bella intelligenza in corsa, rimanendo molto freddo. Prossimo obiettivo le Phoenix Stakes G1 al Curragh il 7 Agosto. Per il secondo arrivato Mehmas, possibili le Richmond Stakes G2 di Goodwood il 28 Luglio o le July Stakes G2 a Newmarket il 7 Luglio. Ascot, day 1: Gloria Queen Anne Stakes per l’americana #Tepin, battuto #Belardo. Deludono #Ervedya ed #Esoterique

Niente Lasix, niente cerottone. Nessun problema, nemmeno sul pesante. La 5 anni Tepin (Bernstein) , così piccola, esile, ma piena di energia, ha ottenuto la 7° vittoria consecutiva sfatando il tabu americani nelle Queen Anne G1 e dimostrando di essere di una caratura massiccia. La cavalla di Mark Casse ha sfruttato la scia di quelli davanti per presentarsi con del buono in mano e continuare sulla scia di quanto fece nella Breeders’ Cup Mile G1, diventando il primo cavallo USA a vincere una corsa sempre ambiziosa. Con Julien Leparoux in sella ha tenuto a bada uno come Belardo (Lope De Vega), forse un pò addormentato a sferrare l’attacco, lasciando al terzo, un pò a sorpresa,Lightning Spear (Pivotal) e bagnando le polveri di Ervedya (Pivotal) incapace di cambiare marcia su un terreno che, ipoteticamente, era amico. Tepin ha anche sfatato e scombussolato gli scommettitori che l’hanno trascurata sin dalle prime ore della mattina, lasciando basiti quanti coloro i quali pensavano che la pista dritta potesse essere un problema. Nulla di tutto ciò, Tepin è la campionessa in un tempo lento comunque di 1:43.87, il più lento dal 1988, condizionato dal terreno. Con questa vittoria ha emulato la grandiosaGoldikova (Anabaa) che nel 2010 diventò la seconda femmina nella storia, dopo Kandy Sauce nel 1956, a vincere questa corsa. E la seconda dopo Goldì, a vincere il Mile e poi le Queen Anne. Obiettivo ancora sarà la Breeders’ Cup Mile G1 del 2016. Roger Varian nonostante la sconfitta di Belardo ha parlato di fierezza nei confronti di Belardo, tornato ad offrire uno standard che a 2 anni ci si aspettava poteva essere tale, e lo rivedremo nelle Sussex Stakes G1 di Goodwood del 27 Luglio, o nel Prix Jacques le Marois G1 del 14 Agosto a Deauville. Deludentissima, ancora di più, l’altra femminaEsoterique, arrivata ultima senza apparenti motivazioni sufficientemente comprensibili. Magari domani si scoprirà cosa è accaduto, ma intanto la gloria è tutta per una cavalla che ha cominciato dal basso e solo da un anno ha cominciato ad impreziosire la sua bacheca di G1. Galileo Gold wins battle of Guineas winners

IN WHAT was billed as the clash of the 2,000 Guineas winners,Galileo Gold came out on top under Frankie Dettori to stamp his authority on Classic generation with a dazzling performance.

The Newmarket Classic winner, trained by Hugo Palmer, travelled like a dream and kicked away from his rivals inside the final two furlongs to score at 6-1, with the 4-5 favourite and French Guineas winner The Gurkha in second, and the Irish Guineas conqueror Awtaad in third.

‘A magnificent ride’

It was an inspired ride from Dettori, who managed to grab the rail despite having the widest draw as he settled in second place behind the pacemaker Cymric throughout the early stages of the contest, and Palmer was full of praise for his rider.

“It was a tough challenge, he got the most magnificent ride from the widest draw,” said the trainer. “It’s fair to say he’s the best three-year-old colt in Europe.”

The Gurkha and Awtaad were slightly slow out of the stalls. In contrast, Galileo Gold was very slick, allowing Dettori to guide his mount over which meant he had first run on his rivals and the jockey admitted: “Everything went to plan – I managed to get first run on the other two.”

Palmer added: “He ran a huge race in Ireland but he wasn’t able to use his stride there. At Newmarket and here today the horse’s stride was never broken. Frankie managed to get him into the most magnificent rhythm and then the horse just galloped and galloped and galloped.

“It shows you why at this level you need everything to go right. One tiny thing went wrong in Ireland and we finished second. Everything went right today and we won. He’s a remarkable colt and we’re very lucky to have him.

“It went very well for us today and I’d say they have to come and beat us now in the Sussex Stakes. Since the owner sponsors it I’d imagine that’s where we go.”

‘I’ve no doubt he is better than that’

Awtaad was the first to chase home Galileo Gold but after trying to get on terms without dealing a blow, he tired in the final furlong and relinquished second place to The Gurkha, and connections were not convinced he liked the ground.

Angus Gold, representative for owner Hamdan Al Maktoum, said: “My own feeling is that I’m not convinced the horse wants the ground this soft. The fact he had the better of The Gurkha and then The Gurkha came and got him at the end and he stopped in his run.

“Watching the horse’s action, I don’t think he needs really soft ground. I think he was struggling in the ground a bit. There will be no point trying to go further yet and I’ve no doubt he’s better than we saw today. He was never winging like he was in Ireland.”

Cut for Sussex

Bookmakers were impressed by the son of Paco Boy’s performance with Paddy Power going 2-1 from 5-1 for the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood.
