Minding overcomes trouble to land Oaks
Report: Epsom, Friday, Investec Oaks (Group 1) 1m4f10y, 3yo fillies
ANY doubts over stamina or stalls were brushed aside by Minding, who overcame trouble on the turn to the straight to become the first filly since Kazzia in 2002 to complete the 1,000 Guineas and Oaks double.
Aidan O’Brien’s daughter of Galileo landed her fourth Group 1 success just 12 days after finishing second to Jet Setting in the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas, though it didn’t look particularly likely three furlongs out.

As Ryan Moore attempted to make his move aboard the odds-on favourite, the retreating pair of Australian Queen and Turret Rocks pinned her in with Moore being forced to switch to the rail.
However, as soon as she saw daylight, it was clear there was only going to be one winner as Minding ranged upsides eventual second Architecture two furlongs out before securing a length-and-three-quarter win with Harlequeen eight lengths back in third.
‘She’s much the best’
Moore said: “I had a charmed run and then the boys all wanted to get moving and came on top of me. She had nowhere to go but thankfully she got me out of trouble.
“She’s much the best, she’s a very good filly. Her class got her out of trouble and she’ll be effective at shorter, for sure.”
Cut for the Arc
Paddy Power shortened the star filly to 5-1 (from 12) for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and O’Brien is set to give her a “little easy time” before finalising plans for the rest of the season.
O’Brien said: “She’s incredible, what can I say? She has speed, class, stamina and a great mind. She has everything and Ryan did brilliantly to win after what she went through.
“Real heart and guts and courage had to come into it with a furlong and a half to go and she had it in abundance.
“Like all the Galileos, when you go digging, they usually have it. We will give her a little easy time now and then pick a time for her.”
‘I’m hugely proud of her’
Hugo Palmer’s Architecture posted a career-best performance in second with the Newmarket trainer “hugely proud” of his filly.
Palmer said: “There were several moments in the race when I thought we had won but my God, the winner is good.
“Frankie said she should be very competitive again in Ireland and she’s proved she’s a proper, top class, Group 1 filly. She’ll just have to avoid Covert Love now!”
