Roger Charlton: will supplement Imperial Aviator for the French Derby
PICTURE: Edward Whitaker (racingpost.com/photos)
Imperial Aviator to be added to French Derby
ROGER CHARLTON has revealed that wide-margin London Gold Cup winner Imperial Aviator will be supplemented for Sunday’s Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly.
It had been thought that Imperial Aviator would contest the Group 3 Tercentenary Stakes at Royal Ascot after making a mockery of his opening handicap mark at Newbury, but Charlton on Wednesday announced the horse would instead be fast-tracked to Group 1 company.
Murphy on board
“Imperial Aviator due to be supplemented tomorrow for Sunday’s Prix du Jockey-Club at Chantilly,” Charlton tweeted.
Confirming the decision to the Racing Post, Charlton said: “The plan is to supplement tomorrow all being well, and, at the moment, all is well.
“Oisin Murphy will travel over to ride him. I am pretty sure he will be better suited to the easy side than the fast side but it is an unknown dimension to the affair.”
Chantilly was subject to torrential rain at the start of the week and on Wednesday morning was described as heavy, with a penetrometer reading of 4.7
Imperial Aviator beat leading Investec Derby fancy Ulysses on his reappearance at Leicester in April on ground described as good to soft, which is the softest surface he has tackled so far.
O’Brien squad down to two
Aidan O’Brien removed eight of his ten entries for Sunday’s Prix du Jockey Club at the latest forfeit stage on Wednesday morning, with Epsom ante-post fancies US Army Ranger, Deauville and Idaho all disappearing from the Chantilly reckoning.
O’Brien’s remaining representatives for Sunday’s €1.5 million French Derby are Bravery - who is also engaged in the Investec Derby at Epsom – and Black Sea, who does not hold an Epsom engagement.
British contenders
The David Simcock-trained Algometer also remains in the lists for both Classic as 16 stood their ground for the Jockey Club ahead of Thursday’s supplementary stage, when Poule d’Essai third Dicton is expected to be added to the field.
The other British-trained horses still engaged are John Gosden’s Foundation, Richard Hannon’s Ventura Storm and Harry Dunlop’s Robin Of Navan.
Massaat – who is expected to run at Epsom – was another Derby contender taken out of the Jockey Club. However, owner Hamdan Al Maktoum could still be represented by the Freddy Head-trained Raseed.

Even Song not declared to face Minding in Oaks
IMPRESSIVE 1,000 Guineas winner Minding features among nine declarations for Friday’s Investec Oaks at Epsom, but stablemate Even Song, who had been the 7-1 joint-second favourite, does not run.
RELATED LINKS, Investec Oaks card
Minding, who suffered a shock defeat to Jet Setting in the Irish 1,000 Guineas less than a fortnight ago, will be joined by stablemates Seventh Heaven and Somehow at Epsom.
The Aidan O’Brien-trained three-year-old will be bidding to become the first filly since Kazzia in 2002 to complete the 1,000 Guineas and Oaks double.
How High The Moon is the only other absentee.
Hot favourite
Minding has been installed as the 10-11 favourite with Paddy Power to bounce back from her shock defeat at the Curragh last month and provide her trainer with a sixth win in the Oaks.
She could become the first filly to be sent off as an odds-on favourite in the Oaks since Reams Of Verse triumphed at 5-6 in 1997, while Friday’s Group 1 will be the first single-figure field since Ouija Board beat six rivals to score in 2004.
Biggest dangers
Skiffle is bidding to emulate six-time Group 1 winner Snow Fairy by proving victorious in the Oaks having been supplemented after winning the Height of Fashion Stakes at Goodwood. She is the general 6-1 second favourite.
She stayed on powerfully to win over 1m2f at Goodwood and is expected to be well suited by the step up in trip at Epsom, while soft conditions are likely to place a further emphasis on stamina.
Speaking on Tuesday, John Ferguson, chief executive for owners Godolphin, said: “Skiffle is by Dubawi, whose offspring handle ease in the ground, and also her dam Princess Dansante was effective in soft ground in France.
“She’s a quality filly whose progress has been remarkable. She emerged from Goodwood working and looking like an Oaks filly. We couldn’t be happier.”
Other contenders
The stoutly bred Turret Rocks is also expected to improve for the step up in trip from a mile and is the 7-1 third favourite, while 11-1 shot Architecture is tasked with providing trainer Hugo Palmer with a second British Classic following Galileo Gold’s 2,000 Guineas success last month.
The nine-runner field is completed by Australian Queen, Diamonds Pour Moi and Harlequeen.

Epsom: the Derby takes place at Epsom on Saturday

Chance Epsom going could change to soft
THE going at Epsom was described as good to soft, soft in places after 22.2mm of rain fell at the course on Tuesday and there is a chance that conditions could deteriorate further as between 2-5mm of rain is forecast Wednesday lunchtime.
RELATED LINKS, Investec Derby card , Investec Derby betting
Speaking on Wednesday morning, clerk of the course Andrew Cooper said: “We’re not going to get anything like we did yesterday but it is drizzling and overcast at the moment.
“At lunchtime there is the risk of something more organised and we could be looking at between 2-5mm.”
When asked what impact such rainfall could have on the going, Cooper said: “Were we to get towards the upper end of that estimate I would say the next stop would be soft, but we are not there yet.”
Betting updates
In light of the deteriorating conditions, punters have latched onto proven soft-ground performers.
Harzand, an impressive winner of the Ballysax Stakes on heavy ground, was trimmed from 20-1 to 16-1 on Tuesday and that price is likely to come under pressure as he was trading at 15-1 on the Betfair exchange on Wednesday morning.
Harzand’s participation has yet to be confirmed, however.
“We’ll make a decision before declaration time on Thursday. If Harzand doesn’t go to Epsom he’ll be trained for the Irish Derby,” trainer Dermot Weld said on Tuesday.
US Army Ranger, who was weak in the betting throughout the day on Tuesday, was trading at a shade over 6-1 on Betfair on Wednesday morning.
Stoute not concerned
Sir Michael Stoute is hopeful that the Epsom ground won’t inconvenience his Derby pair Ulysses and Across the Stars who were out cantering on Wednesday morning.
He said: “Obviously we would all like good ground but I’m sure the ground will dry up by the weekend. One good thing is that they didn’t water before they had the rain which could have been tricky.”
On the opposition on Saturday Stoute added: “There are lightly raced types like US Army Ranger and Wings Of Desire that could be anything in the race but I’m sure it will be won by a good horse as it always is.”
